One of my most Treasured books

"My Glorious Brothers" was once given my by a friend, about
30 years ago. He told me it was among his favorite books. I
soon found out why. Written in a beautiful, almost poetic
style, Howard Fast (a great and prolific writer) presents the
story of the Maccabees. These were the heroes of the amazing
Jewish Revolt against the mightiest world power at that time --
the Syrian-Greek Empire. From the small village of Modin, a
father and his five sons organize a rebellion to free ancient
Israel from its cruel occupiers. It is a thrilling account,
written from the perspective of Simon -- one of the five sons.
Fighting perhaps the first "guerilla war" in human history,
the Maccabees lead their nation of farmers and scholars against
the greatest organized fighting force in the world. It is a
thrilling and inspiring story of the few against the many; the
weak against the mighty. Their triumphs and sorrows are told
in one of the most moving books I have ever read. The Holiday
called Hanukah, celebrated by Jews the world over, commemorates
this incredible story.
Over the last 30 years I somehow lost this wonderful book,
and have spent years looking for another copy. I finally found
a used copy on Amazon, and paid a small ransom for it, gladly.
I am re-reading this story and will pass this book to my son.
It is truly one of the most treasured possesions in my life.

The most fascinating story about the Maccabees

The Maccabees were a priestly family from the village of Modyin in the vicinity of Jerusalem, who led a 30-years rebellion war in the 2nd. century BC, against the Greek King Antiochus who wanted to impose pagans religious practices on the jews. The name Maccabee was a title of honour given to Judas, one of the 5 sons of Mattathias, the hero of the Jewish wars of independence (168-164 BC). Later, the name Maccabees was given to his whole family, specially to Mattathias, the old father, as well as to Judas brothers: John, Simon, Eleazar and Jonathan. The meaning of the word Maccabee in Hebrew, may be: 1) Hammer; 2) Hammerer or 3) Extinguisher. By defeating the greeks, they began to sanctify once again, the Great Temple of Jerusalem. They used a small candle that, astonishingly, burned for 8 days. This is why, every year, jews all over the world commemorate the holydays of Hanuka with the Hanukia - an 8 candle-sticks candelabrum. The story of the Maccabees and the Maccabeean wars, was written by Howard Fast as if it was Simon's own Diary. Later, Simon, one of the Maccabees, turned to be a judge and a high priest in the Great Temple of Jerusalem. He was assassinated in 134 BC. The rebellion was described in this book in its most human and philosophical aspects. The standing of the few against the many. The love of the jewish people for its sacred land and religious practices. Their loyalty to the Word of God. Their might and heroism for principles they believed most, like freedom. The reader will have the impression that Howard Fast really lived in the same epoch. Many of the moral lessons of this epoch are very actual, nowadays.

A good book for Christians who want to understand Hebrews.

Many Christians would be better able to understand why the Hebrew nation is so fiercely nationalistic about their homeland if they read this book. This same material appears in the Douay Bible of the Roman Catholic church. Two books that appear in the Old Testament of this bible that are not in the Protestant Old Testament are 1 Machabees and 2 Machabees. It is essentially the same story as that told by Fast. When coupled with the history of Fast himself, the book becomes even more important. The Hebrew nation will persevere because it is God's chosen people, even if certain Hebrews lose the faith and later return.
I have recommended this book to many Messianic Jews as well as Christians who want to better understand the Hebrew nation.

A Fine Work, Highly Recommended

This book is an excellent account of the causes and aftermath of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919. Tuttle manages to pull together an array of primary sources including newspaper articles, meeting minutes, and first-hand accounts, both written and oral, to tell the story of the Chicago Race Riot. His goal is to write history "from the bottom up", and in this, he is successful.

My only complaint is that by focusing heavily on individual accounts and exceptions to the norm, Tuttle misses out on some broader historical trends. However, since his stated goal is to write a study of "individuals as well as groups", this approach is understandable, and, in places, even desirible.

This is one of the only books on the subject of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919, and, as such, it should be of interest to anyone studying the history of Chicago or the history of race relations in the United States.

Wonderful Book

Overall this is a wonderful book. It is obviously this is a long term study done by William W. Tuttle, Jr. I found that his main goal in this book was to write an understandable book that documents the events that occured in Chicago in the year of 1919. In his book, it is apparent that he covered every aspect and perspective of the events that took place. This may be due to the fact that he not only focuses on the events that took place in chicago. but also on other similar events that took place around the nation. My only compliant might be that because of this the theme of the book at times seem recurrent and repeative. That aside, I would suggest this book to anyone interested in the history of Chicago.

best (and only) book on the 1919 Chicago riots

As far as I know, this is the only book on the subject, which is an absolutely fascinating one for me. It is well written and very coherent, but unfortunately the author spends most of the book of the causes and results of the riots, not on the riot itself. Still, this is a wonderful book, essential for anybody interested in Chicago history.

Part of the history of American Psychiatry

If you want a concise history of the evolution of American (and world) psychiatry over the past
75 years or so, just look at the differences in the "DSM" versions from version I to version
V (just released last year). DSM-III I think of as the beginning of the current period of psychiatry,
with diagnostic categories based less on theoretical models and more on the basis of
inter-rater reliability for the diagnostic criteria, indications of "discreteness" of the diagnosis,
looking at diagnoses from various perspectives (epidemiology, genetics, treatment response,
co-morbidities, long-term course, and other research findings) and, yes, mistakes that get
made, as well. The ongoing problem with psychiatric diagnosis is that there is not yet a
"gold standard" test to definitively pronounce a diagnosis as present or absent; not in the same
way as, for example a chest X-ray and a sputum culture might definitively diagnose a pneumonia.
Diagnoses remain based on clinical profiles, not on clear etiologic bases, so it is like looking at
the state of many medical diagnoses in the late 1800's.

Far reaching accusations, but still entertaining

There is no doubt that Andrew Jennings did his research and has solid contacts inside FIFA, that lead to him writing his book Foul. But sometimes I felt like he jumped to conculsions that some of the evidence didn't present. On the other hand, because of FIFA's lack of transparency, there may be no other way to prove some of the points. Over all it is still an entertaining and interesting book. Opens the curtains to how cut-throat the politics inside the orgainizations are, and why it takes some bad people to navigate it.

It's all come out now in 2012

This book is what I see as an almost continuation of another book called "Badfellas" FIFA Family at War. It take over where it left off with the election of Blatter and a continuation of the research done discovering all the atrocities of soccer's governing body. Only now in July of 2012 does most of this information come to public light as the Swiss courts just exposed Blatters mentor Havelange & his step son Texeira of Brazil. It was eye opening then and sort of funny to see it all come to fruition as those who made Blatter in the last decade or more are the ones he is turning on and burying to save his own skin.

A dry look at a crooked organization

This book focuses on FIFA, the organization that manages soccer throughout the world. They are best known in the US for the World Cup, but the tentacles of this group reach into every aspect of pro and amateur soccer in the US and the world. If you like financial intrigue and organizational shenanigans, you will probably find many parts of this book interesting. My problem with it is that the author seems to try to hard to tell a compelling story, and it makes reading the book tedious. Having said that, the author has obviously researched the material and has done a fantastic job of uncovering some very bad behavior, and he should be commended for pointing out the wrong doings of this powerful organization.

The Imaginary Traveler is 184 pages packed full of poetry, prose, and imaginative artwork. Let me say up front that this is not a book for those looking for light and sickly-sweet poems. It dives deep into the divine madness of love, lust, and obsession. It is a retrospective look at love’s dizzying apex, and the subsequent long fall, and sickening impact with a harsh reality.

Your hands have never touched me,
and yet you seem to have hit all the right spots.
Those seen and unseen, both inside and out,
places no one else has ever reached…

The poems are unsparingly introspective; by turns both beautiful and brutal, and sometimes beautifully brutal. We look at at the memories of a relationship through the cracked pane and jagged glass shards of the emotional aftermath of lost love and unanswered questions. Massiel guides us through the desolate landscape of a heart betrayed, and Jorgensen’s vivid illustrations add further impact to the writing.

for a pill that kills softly,
the quietest of deaths…
no dreams left worth hoping,
no hopes worthy of being dreamt,
no more why and wherefore,

Though much of the book delves into dark places of the heart, there are moments of beauty and hopefulness scattered throughout.

I’m glad I read The Imaginary Traveler. It was a journey well worth taking, and I recommend it to anyone who loves poetry and isn’t afraid to wander down all the twisted pathways where love and lust might lead.

A series of poems, mostly painful and bitter, on the subject of love. It is filled with imagery, and the illustrations beautifully exemplify them. The author's descriptive ability is able to shock and pain, bringing up your most poignant memories.

Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus, anglicised as Tertullian, (ca. 160 – ca. 220 A.D.)[1] was a prolific early Christian Berber author[2] and the first to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature. Other Latin formulations that first appear in his work are "three Persons, one Substance" as the Latin "tres Personae, una Substantia" (itself from the Koine Greek "treis Hypostases, Homoousios"). Some of Tertullian's ideas were not acceptable to the orthodox Church; in later life he became a Montanist.

Unidentified edition -- source is Schaff 1885 ANF

This Kindle version is obviously Philip Schaff, Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol. 3 (Eerdman's)(1885 edition, reprint by Christian Ethereal Library, undated). The headings which editors added match Schaff's version. So too the text, as far as I checked.

As the prior comment said, I too enjoy reading on the Kindle. Much more accessible. You can highlight and add notes for later reference, and search on them as well. This book was written by Tertullian in 207 AD about Marcion, a heretic whose movement almost grew larger than orthodox Christianity. Marcionism taught the complete abrogation of the Law given Moses, and not just circumcision.

Finally Something NEW in money magic!

A lot of wealth magic advice seems to amount to the same thing: "blah blah blah, green candle, blah blah blah dollar bill, blah blah blah, wear this kitchen ingredient in your shoe."

But if it hasn't escaped your notice, the world; particularly the world of wealth; has been significantly disrupted of late. So clearly a new modus is called for.

Enter Financial Sorcery.

Contained within is practical advice, secret wealth hacks and some real-world learnings from a successful business owner... who also happens to be one of the premier voices in modern magic. It is a truly potent combination.

As far as the actual MAGIC is concerned... the Jupiter glyphs are ASTOUNDING... they represent a completely new addition to the canon of Planetary Magic and alone are worth the price of your admission.

Some of the practical advice is really only applicable in the USA but that's a minor quibble that will only affect a minority of readers. This is the inevitable reality of having a finite number of pages in a book.

Necessary Reading for Magicians and Witches

Financial Sorcery is the kind of book that needed to be here about twenty or so years ago. Too many practitioners have a poor relationship with wealth.. the kind where they and wealth aren't really speaking. This book helps turn that around.

This book is equal parts practical wealth strategies, and practical wealth sorcery. Both are essential. Anyone can do a wealth ritual, but getting advice and resources that work in order to really build wealth is sadly lacking in the community. Lots of really good, and really practical advice on a mundane level.

Now, if you want some strait sorcery to go with your practical advice, you can't beat the Lightening Glyphs, or ritually moving your set point. Those alone are worth the price of the book.

This book is a great starting place for every witch or magician who wants to really get a hold on their financial present and future, but who might have trouble relating to other books on the subject. It's about more than a once off spell to get out of a jam. It's about building a strategy to build wealth for you whole life and using some pretty powerful workings to back it up.

Chapter 5 in this book is really the only chapter you need. The other chapters use sociological factors to shift one's thinking. That is great and all, but I was mainly interested in the sigils and that is exactly what I received.

This book goes by a simple formula to make it work. Here it goes:

a) Rule 1: Thursday is the day of Jupiter.

(For those who are unaware of Jupiter's powers, he is the god that brings increase and significant prosperity into your life in odd forms. Of course, working is important, but this brings all of your efforts on another level. The secret is being open to receiving opportunities and not close-minded. I cannot stress that enough).

b) Rule 2: On Thursday night, the first hour after Sunset (IMPORTANT-TIMING IS EVERYTHING TO ANCIENT ENTITIES, pour a glass of wine or grape juice, not water, light a money incense cone )if you have one.

c) Rule 3: Draw one of the sigils that best apply to your money situation through pages 80 and 86.

d) Rule 4: Raise your glass of wine in the air and the sigil and clear your mind of all negativity. And say the chant on page 76 and page 78.

Two Cents: After you are done with the chant, the author mentions you must bury the sigil in earth somewhere. If you live in an apartment complex, you don't want your neighbors to think you are weird so I would recommend to get a flower pot from Walmart and place some soil inside and bury the sigil that way. It is also important to talk about the powers of Jupiter with others to increase the effectiveness of the sigil and spell.

One important thing that the author fails to mention, is that this is still a form of money spell and for it to be the most effective, I would recommend doing this chant only for the first two Thursdays of each month. I say this because you will be doing it during the waxing moon phase ( increase spells) and the full moon phase (lunar phase is the most powerful).

You do not, I repeat do not want to do this chant the final Thursday of the month because the timing is off and that would be during the (waning phase) of the moon. The waning phase is when you ask for things to be removed from your life. So, again timing is important to ancient entities with certain duties.

Today is August 13, Thursday and it is a waxing phase. I am completing the Jupiter chant tonight when the sun sets. I am specifically asking for $7k which is owed to me and has been held up for a few months now.
