Plot driven

Although these are typical superhero v. villain story, it is rare to see plot complexity that deals with the amalgam of human emotions that Peter Parker and Spider-Man confront in these 1960 issues. As a teenager he has to deal with feelings toward Betty Brant. He also has internal conflicts as he tries to combat crime and meet his responsibility toward aunt May. At the same time, he faces persecution from cops, JJJ's relentless bad press, and a public opinion that is at best divided in its trust on our hero. In spite of all this, Spider-Man deals with this persecution responsibly and with a positive psychology, always expecting that something good will come out of it.
These issues from 1965 and 1966 are also quite interesting because they bring up actual events into the story: the space race between the U.S. and the Soviets is mentioned in the stories about JJJ's asronaut son reappear. The draft for the Vietnam War is mentioned because Flash Thompson got a draft notice, providing another reason to pick on Peter Parker for not receiving one. Other cultural references like Jack Benny, Woody Allen, and the Lawrence Welk show are also made.
In these issues, Betty Brant makes up her mind to marry Ned Leeds, Peter Parker and the gang graduate, it appears that Liz Allen disappears because she doesn't go to college, Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy also make their debut when Peter goes to college. Gwen Stacy seems to be attracted to Peter Parker and Harry Osborn initially dislikes Parker. Mary Jane Watson's cheerful and dynamic persona does add stamina to the Spider-Man stories. We also get to find out that the Green Goblin is Harry's father and the strenuous relationship between the two is shown here. The father-son relationship between the Osborns is also a faithful portrait of dysfunctional families, a topic that was becoming popular in the sixties. The generational differences is also illustrated in Aunt May's misunderstandings of Peter's slang. Spidey also joins Dr. Strange to fight a madman who tries to control e world through a magic wand; and he almost joins the Avengers. I think is last story, published in an annual, is quite weak for a strong lack of motive. Why do they suddenly become interested in him? How come the Dare Devil is not invited in? The story, however, reaffirms that Spider-Man is a loner, and fated to be on his own forever.

an enjoyable trip down memory lane......

I purchased this as a present for my grandson and ended up reading and enjoying it myself. This book brought back many childhood memories for me of carefree afternoons of reading adventures and comic book swapping with friends.
What a great and inexpensive way to regain your old comic book collection. I thought the black and white illistrations might take something away but it really doesn't. This is the second book in the series that I have purchased and would difinately recommend it to anyone looking for some nostalgia.

Publishing error: Issue #40 & #41 not present

I don't know about other customers, but my copy ordered from Amazon contains a publishing error.
Issue #40 (the continuation of issue #39 in which Spidy and the Green Goblin are supposed to be unmasked) stops after the first page, then skips to page 17 of issue #39. Upon reaching the the first page of issue #40 again, it skips to page 8 of issue #42. Issues #40 and #41 do not appear in this book.
If you're buying this to have on your shelf, that's fine, but if you're buying it to read, the climax is missing and this did not make for a very easy bedtime as I was reading it to my 7 year old son.
I would love to know if other customers had the same problem and how I can get a copy of issues #40-42.

UPDATE: I went to a physical bookstore and was able to get a copy of this book which did not have the publishing error. Changed review to 3 stars because it's a good book for the target market, but I'm leaving the review: online buyer beware! Some copies of this book have publishing errors which remove the climax from the book.
