About the Author
William S. Burroughs was born in St. Louis in 1914. He is best-known work is 1959's "Naked Lunch"-which became the focus of a landmark 1962 Supreme Court decision that helped eliminate literary censorship in the United States. Described by Norman Mailer as one of America's few writers genuinely "possessed by genius," he died in 1997. His many other works include "Junky" and "The Place of Dead Roads" (Picador).

Very effective.

For such an old book, this one is excellent. The style is amazingly simple but effective. It reminded me almost of Charles Bukowski's work at some points. I can see why William Burroughs would have admired this memoir and even cherished it.

It held my attention

I enjoyed this book. It held my attention so well that I finished it within two days. It transported me vividly into the seedy underbelly of late nineteenth century America. I found myself in the presence of such larger than life characters as Salt Chunk Mary, the Sanctimonious Kid, Smiler, and “Foot-and-a-half” George. I could smell the scent of cheap rooming-houses. I could feel the tension of slowly sneaking a wallet out from under a sleeping man’s pillow.

I bought it because of its much-documented influence on William Burroughs. He first read it aged thirteen and it remained a significant part of his inner landscape for the rest of his life. It is easy to see why this book had such an attraction for the young Burroughs. It’s almost as if the thirteen year old knew where he was heading as soon as he had read this book. Prose style, life-perspective, and many of the characters could (and do) walk straight out of “You Can’t Win” and into a Burroughs text.

Anyone who knows anything about “El Hombre Invisible” will recognise the following: here is the Sanctimonious Kid advising the young Jack on page 118.
“Do you want everybody to look at you? Do you want everybody that looks at you to remember you? You do not. You want as few people to look at you as possible, and you want those few to forget you as soon as possible,” he continued with emphasis.
“What you want is clothes that will not detain the eye for a second. Expensive as you like, and well-fitting, but not loud or striking. You want clothes that a man or woman could not describe as blue, brown or black five minutes after looking at you. You want neutral clothes. Be as positive yourself as you like, but no positive clothes. You’ve got to watch yourself, Kid. You know that ‘old maxim’, eternal vigilance.”

This book is well worth reading. The illustrations by Joe Coleman are also memorable.

I knew nothing about this book or the author before ...

I knew nothing about this book or the author before I started reading it and it was a really pleasant surprise. It's the warts-n-all memoir of a career criminal (specifically: a prowler) at the end of the 19th century/start of the 20th century. The author doesn't attempt to justify his life of crime or blame it on a troubled upbringing/society. He just tells it straight. Fascinating book, and this edition has some further essays by the author at the back on crime and justice which are also worth reading.

A highly-indented coastline of barren, tundra fells backed by monumental fjords, towering snow-capped mountains and rocky, windswept islands, makes Norwegian Lapland one of the most scenically rewarding places to travel in the whole of Europe. Quite unlike the densely forested heartlands of Swedish and Finnish Lapland where spruce and pine trees dominate the landscape, these coastal lands at the top of Europe, buffeted by the Arctic winds, are either completely void of trees or slavishly support a few dwarf species that have become specially adapted to the ferocious climate. It’s a place where snow storms and blizzards sweeping in off the Arctic Ocean can persist for days during the long, dark winter, yet equally a land of exquisite beauty in spring and summer when the delicate flowers of the Arctic burst forth, profiting from the relentless 24hr daylight of the Midnight Sun. The unforgiving geography of Norwegian Lapland is at its most awe-inspiring in the west, where the mountain chain reaches dizzying heights of 1700m. Further east, the landscapes become less agitated, slowly falling away, to be replaced with plateaux of grey, weather-beaten rocks which slip effortlessly into the steely waters of the Arctic Ocean.

Not very extensive

I was excited to get this book a couple months before my vacation to Finnish Lapland. However I'm a bit underwhelmed. First I noticed a small mistake: they list the airport code to Kittilä as KTL, but it's actually KTT. That's not a big deal. But then was disappointed to find that they don't even mention the area I'm going to visit. Ylläs is the largest ski area in Finland in terms of number of ski runs/slopes and lifts. There is no mention of it at all is this book. It's in between 2 villages: Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo, both of which have local tour guides offering husky, reindeer and snowmobile safaris. No mention of these towns or tour operators either. They do mention Levi, which has the largest ski village and more amenities than Ylläs. There's probably a lot of good info in this book, but if you're going to Finnish Lapland, I think you'd be better off buying the Lonely Planet Finland guide.

The best guide we could find for visiting Northern Sweden and Norway

Of the three books we bought for our trip to Northern Sweden and Norway in January to see the Aurora Borealis, this was the best. The others were more general and had very little information on this zone.

"Hell on Earth is an easy to read, funny, and well-written light comedy. The prose is random, taking you off in a million different directions, but I giggled and laughed out loud as I read the adventures of Reg, Death and friends as they began their journey from the ridiculous to the sublime, looking for a new location for hell, on earth!
It's a little Pratchett-esque in places, taking you round in circles with the clever narrative, and the jokes come thick and fast... A really enjoyable read."

The writing is great. I laughed out loud many times. The story is excellent and I love the characters.

The formatting is poor. I am absolutely stunned that a Kindle book would be this poorly set up. If I were the author I would be extremely upset.

About the Author
David Morin is a Lecturer and the Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Physics Department at Harvard University. He received his A.B. in mathematics from Brown University and his Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Harvard University. He is the author of five books, including Introduction to Classical Mechanics (Cambridge University Press, 2008), Electricity and Magnetism (Cambridge University Press, co-author, 2013), and Special Relativity: For the Enthusiastic Beginner (2017). When not writing textbooks, thinking of physics limericks, or conjuring up new problems whose answers involve e or the golden ratio, he can be found running along the Charles River or hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This book is awesome

This text is AMAZING!

This Harvard prof. was able to make probability fun for students, yet presented the material in a manner rigorous enough for any college/high school course.

I am familiar with over a dozen probability textbooks and they all present the material in the same way with the same tired arguments. This author must have thought long and hard about the best ways to present every idea. I am posting two figures that show just how much he's thought about teaching the subject: (1) I smiled when I saw this figure. After seeing this, I don't think students will mix-up permutations quite as much. (2) This figure shows how the Binomial, Gaussian, and Poisson distributions are related to one another via limits. This is difficult to teach, but this simple figures sums it up beautifully!
Looks like he's also spent quite a bit of time developing good exercises and problems in all chapters. More than enough for a single course.

The text is totally approachable, unpretentious, and it’s a fun read.
I’m thrilled I chose this text. I strongly recommend it to students and instructors alike.

For those interested in Probability this book guarantees that what you learn will always be useful and relevant.

If you have ever struggled with Combinatorics in probability books, the first chapter of this book will be a godsend.
The first chapter is 56 pages long. However, when it comes to teaching and learning probability, this is the most fruitful 56 pages that I have ever seen. If you have struggled with Combinatorics, like I have, reading Chapter 1 of this book should clear much of the fog. The author doesn't assume that the reader has relevant experience in Combinatorics, which he defines as "The study of how to count things."

The author avoids the irritating phrase "it can be shown that." Rather he shows you how to "count things" as he develops the relationships used to "count things." You may have encountered the relationships he develops in the past. However, the author's explanations provides more details which makes the concepts more plausible. For example, he uses Venn Diagrams when developing probabilities for dependent events and the Probability Square when developing probabilities for independent events. To some this may seem trivial and/or obvious. However, this may not be the case for those who are studying these concepts for the first time.

This book is written in a manner that covers a broad audience interested in learning probability. You should have a very good background in at least algebra. This book is designed for more than just scratiching the surface of Probability. This may be the motivation behind the subtitle..."For the Enthusiastic Beginner."

The seven Chapters cover:

Chapter 1....Combinatorics
Chapter 2....Probability
Chapter 3....Expectation values
Chapter 4....Distributions
Chapter 5....Gaussian approximations
Chapter 6....Correlation and regression
Chapter 7....Appendices

The author solves many example problems in each chapter as aids to learning. There are also end of chapter problems with detailed solutions. Each chapter ends with a summary, which precedes the end of chapter exercises. It is noteworthy that Chapter 3 involves topics that are encountered in statistics. This is an additional plus that emphasizes the relationships between probability and statistics. This is a five star book.

An Excellent introduction to Probability for a Beginner

I thought I had a good understanding of statistics, but soon realized I wasn't very good at reading formulas and didn't know much besides descriptive statistics. This book provides a gentle introduction to probability and ramps up to complex ideas quickly. Within the first hundred pages I realized I was comfortable reading formulas that would have intimidated me days earlier.

Kudos to the author for recognizing the need for a book about probability for students who forgot most of their math skills.

The cover art is also wonderful.

Great Coverage of 20th Century Mental Health Issues

Since it was a kindle edition I don't feel that covered enough especially about the Kirkbride asylums, some of which still stand today. There is not enough history about the insane in the book. What I did like was what the author included on the latter half of the 20th century when President Reagan made changes to the care of the mentally ill in America. That topic was covered well. He also included a chapters on treatment with one of the early treatments being lobotomies and another being shock treatment. He revealed the cruelness of these treatments and points to Rosemary Kennedy as an example of what could and did go wrong with treatment.
