About the Author
Amelia Phillips is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has worked for more than 30 years in government, private industry, and academics. She has designed distance education classes and e-commerce, computer forensics, and network security programs at several community colleges. Amelia is Chair of the Pure and Applied Science Division at Highline Community College, a Fulbright Scholar, and a recent PhD in computer security.

Bill Nelson has been a computer forensics examiner for a Fortune 50 company for the past 12 years and has developed high-tech investigation programs for professional organizations and colleges. His previous experience includes AFIS software engineering and reserve police work.

Frank Enfinger, from Suquamish, Washington, is a tenured faculty member at North Seattle Community College and a Computer Forensics Specialist with a local police department. He holds a degree in Computer Science.

Christopher Steuart is one of the founders and the staff attorney for IT Forensics.com. Previously, he was an information systems security specialist for a Fortune 50 company and the United States government. Chris resides in Seattle, Washington.

Wrong Book to use for College Course!

College Professors Listen Up! This is not the book to use for teaching Computer Forensics and Investigation. I am a student in a graduate course for Computer Forensics. The fact that this book uses strictly commercial software for all the exercises is sad. Especially since there are many Open Source tools available that can be used to conduct Computer Forensics. The software included with this book requires that the buyer obtain a license from the vendor, before the software can be used. Then the license is only good for 120 days. This is not fair to the buyer especially for students, who usually have no intent of keeping the book past the end of the semester. It would be better to use a book for the class that the students would find worth keeping for the long term. Also, a book that uses Open Source tools for the examples/exercises, would provide much more value to the students. A much better book to use would be 'Incident Response and Computer Forensics, 2nd Ed' by Chri Prosise, Kevin Mandia and Matt Pepe. If this book does not suite you, then I am sure that you can find another book to use.

This book is better than the previous edition, but there are still problems with the information. As another student posted about a case project. The evidence proved the employee innocent. This is just the beginning of other problems that you will find with the book.

It is introduction to Computer Forensics

This is a textbook for computer forensics. It should be introduction to computer forensics. The book discuss overview of procedures and expectations of a computer forensic investigator. The technical sections in the book uses software to find information. Unfortunately, this information is basic and review for computer nerds.

THIS IS AN UPDATE. I just finished using this book for my class. We went through all 14 chapters: the CD is missing files, and the documentation is not in-sync with the demo software. The school contacted Course and Course is still trying to figure it out (maybe version 3). I am not a legal expert so I don't know if the procedures are right, but they made sense. The book focus is the process of making the extracted information legal. All the software is either demo or limited version. Majority of the projects uses Drivespy which function uses DOS (Win 9x). Sorry, you are out-of-luck if you don't have Win 9x computer. They have limited version of Forsenics Toolkit that works on XP, but the book only uses on a few projects.

Professional Rivalry gone wild!

If you are expecting to learn about digs and dinosaurs, you may be surprised by this book. Although this is a good history of American digs and findings, the author focuses more on the paleontologists and explorers than on the prehistoric things they found.

If you thrive on stories about business psychology, office politics, and cranky Victorian-era paleontologists, this may be your cup of tea. The search for fossils and dinosaur bones led Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh west to dig the prehistoric bone beds of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Their contributions to science and the field of paleontology were massive, and laid the groundwork for modern studies and superb museum and academic collections.

This is not an adventure story. It is the story of the network of Gilded-Age paleontologists, with an emphasis on the rivalry between Cope (of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia) and Marsh (of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale).

The book may inspire you to look for the the serious-minded A&E documentary, "Dinosaur Wars," on the same topic.

"Bone Hunters" a very thorough and readable book. I will incorporate some of this material into my Westward Expansion/Gilded Age lesson plans for HIS 112. What could be better than throwing dinosaurs into the mix?!

As has been pointed out, this book is not so much about now-extinct mammals and dinosaurs in the American West as about the men of the 19th century, especially rivals O.C. Marsh and Edward D Cope, who discovered and classified them. However, it should be noted that the book was written in 1973. Which accounts in part for its low resolution B&W photos. More importantly, it reflects the thinking toward dinosaurs prior to the so-called "dinosaur renaissance" that has taken place in the last four decades.

Every seminary, Bible College & church leadership team should make this book a required reading

Without a doubt one of the most postive and character impacting books for anyone seeking a position of leadership or already in one. No doubt it has raised the bar on what it takes to be a leader that walks with integrity. This book should be REQUIRED reading in every seminary, Bible College and church leadership team. The practical advice for every day leading (with real upto date examples of leadership failures/successes) accompanied by the word of God make this a must read and study book. I highly recommend this book. Buy it for your pastor, for your whole leadership team, and for yourself. You won't regret the investment.

A word for the wise

"Where are the 'Saul's' of God?" The answer might just be staring at us in the mirror! So is the warning cast in this work by Gregg Johnson on the life of King Saul and the pitfalls he faced in his life and ministry. Mixing Biblical wisdom with his own experiences, the author asks many questions of any future leader of the Body of Christ. All of those questions point us to humble and prayerful consideration of our character and ethics, and how they will reflect the Master we are called to serve. This book is an excellent source for any discipleship class or individual study on the causes of failure in Christian leadership/service, and how to avoid them. It is applicable to both the ordained professional and the servant in the pew. The proactive steps of patient preparation, self-examination, submission and accountability will help any future leader to prepare not only their own walk, but also how to reach a hand back to those who are following in their footsteps. Smart people learn from their own mistakes, wise ones learn from the error of others. A must read for multiple staffs!

About the Author

Barry Bergdoll is Professor of Art History at Columbia University in New York. Author and editor of numerous works on 19th century architecture, he has served as curator or curatorial consultant at the Musée d'Orsay, Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and has served as exhibitions editor of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians.

How it all started - A Terrific Introduction to 19th century and Modern Architecture

A clear yet sophisticated introduction. Most undergraduate architectural surveys are organized around either time periods or themes. Chronological approaches tend to be linear and concentrate on form, thematic approaches on overlapping phenomena and the history of ideas. Professor Bergdoll's book ably does both. It combines a complex yet lucid historical narrative with excursions into the history of ideas, developing social and political forces, and the development of new aesthetic and formal problems. Greatest hits include Somerset House, The Crystal Palace, French and English train stations, The Red House, German Romantic Monuments and Rundbogenstil buildings, The Eiffel Tower. The range of topics and the depth of treatment makes this a valuable undergraduate text and though challenging a good text for the architect and fans of architecture.

this book must be read with Modern Architecture by Oxford in order to understand the history of architecture. This book covers the must needed areas of the field including, the hut to Palladio, and others up until the rise of modernism, where incidently the book Modern Architecture takes over. I recommend this book in concordance to that book and for the architecture student whether for class or not.

Can a survey book be any better than this one?

This superb book provides a great overview of the period it covers. It provides a springboard into a vast subject area. Like a well done modern textbook, it has wonderful images of the buildings, lots of margin space for notes, fine paper and durable high quality binding, an excellent index with over 1500 items, an index of all images with source and dates, a very useful bibliography that also makes recommendations for further reading on specific topics covered, a glossary of special terms not easily found online, and a comprehensive graphic timeline. The Oxford series has done a masterful job in all ways, coupled with eye-pleasing graphics. Each page also has (in addition to a page number) a label, identifying the chapter topic on the left and page subject on the right. A model of perfection for all physical books on art and architecture.

Most importantly, the intelligent writing is clear, well organized, and concise yet deep. Every paragraph has insights, and invites the interested reader to delve into the topic in greater depth. The author provides the essential facts of places, dates, and persons but his real contribution is the presentation of the linkage between human ideas and architectural form. Architecture comes alive as an expression of competing ideals and aspirations at the forefront of social changes.

So, with thought-invoking and insightful writing, and a perfect physical book, what else does a demanding architecture history student or enthusiast get? How about an online Amazon "Look Inside" feature that allows you to easily search for any word used in the book, to find each page it is used on, with the sentence it is located in. This is one marriage of books and technology that makes the grade.

But perfection is never enough. I now crave large Ultra HD images I could display on my big screen TV screen to accompany the reading of the book. I know that too will eventually come.

incredible, watershed book

I found this at a somewhat low point in my life, but I read this book expecting great things and I wasn't dissappointed. I only wish it was more available. This book, which details the real-life main character, a semi-famous model/actress' search for that one perfect love is a parallel to the universal search for acceptance and meaning. The story of her incredibly painful life kept me turning each page, reluctant to quit. This woman finally found that perfect love in God, and I must admit it helped me look at God in a new light. When I read what she said He did in her life, I was certain that He could do it in mine- and incredible things have happened since! I also loved her "let's keep it real" honest approach to Christianity. For these reasons, this book was a watershed for me. I think it's great for anyone who likes dramatic true stories. If you don't buy it, at least give it a go at your local library.

A real life-changer

A friend recommended this book, when I was a young adult seeking answers in the early 80's. It was my life story, with times and places changed. It described erroneous ways of thinking that had been destructive; it powerfully took me to a deeper understanding of God's grace for my past and His purpose for my future. Now a pastor's wife working with young single adults, I regularly track down copies to give to those who desperately seek, but are clueless how to find, someone to love them.

The true story will keep you on edge all the way through the book. The model-actress sufferd much but gained her purpose in life.

A powerful memoir of nuclear crisis

Robert Kennedy wrote "Thirteen Days" a short time before his death in 1968. He never had the chance to rewrite and add additional material to his book; but as written it is a riveting account of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. In the Autumn of 1962 the Soviet Union was placing nuclear missiles in Cuba. President Kennedy had to respond to that imminent threat, and the question was what course to take about the dangerous situation in Cuba. There were many that favored an immediate overwhelming military response to destroy the missiles; but Robert Kennedy favored surrounding the island with a naval blockade instead. He believed that a military attack on Cuba could lead to nuclear war, and that it should only be undertaken if there was no other choice. President Kennedy and his advisors spent many agonizing hours trying to consider every possible miscalculation or false step that could result in catastrophe. They sought to learn from the history of the past, and tried to follow a path of understanding in dealing with the Soviet Union and Cuba. The decisions that were made about Cuba would affect the lives of everyone on earth, and the lives of future generations as yet unborn. In this book the momentous events of the crisis in 1962 are seen through the eyes of Robert Kennedy. He opens the door to that time as only one who was there could, and gives many valuable insights into the mind of his brother the President. He helps us to understand what really happened in October 1962; and why. This is a very fine book, containing lessons of history that should always be remembered during times of great crisis.

A Historical Lesson about Human Nature and our own Mortality

"Thirteen Days", a memoir by Robert Kennedy has become one of the most insightful and behind-the-scenes accounts of one of the most studied military confrontations in history. It was a time in which the world looked nuclear annihilation directly in the eyes over the course of 13 dramatic days in October of 1962.
RFK, an intricate player throughout the process, lays out in chilling recollection the Cuban Missile Crisis and how close we actually came to that fateful day when the world's superpowers would square off with nuclear weapons. RFK's first-hand account articulately provides a perspective on what was going on in the minds of the players involved. It allows the reader to understand the enormous weight their decisions carried, as well as all of the pressures that affected each of them.
While a generation remembers a stoic President Kennedy giving his on-air address condemning the soviet supply of offensive weapons into Cuba, "13 Days" brings into account all of the human factors that affected these men as they sought to do what they felt was right.
This was a time in our nation's history when leadership was most needed. With the encouragement of the President, these individuals sought to learn from the mistakes of the past while also sympathizing with the Soviets who were also thrust into this position. The Soviets would not let a military attack go unwarranted, but at the same time had families of their own and ultimately wanted the same outcome from this standoff; a peaceful conclusion.
The decisions that were made by the ExComm would impact the history of the world and all of its inhabitants. It was a trying time that tested the souls of the leaders of the world and proved to be a turning point in world events. As JFK security advisor McGeorge Bundy aptly put it, "Having come so close to the edge, we must make it our business not to pass this way again." President Kennedy did his best to put it all in perspective; "For in the final analysis, our most basic link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."
"13 Days" lays out the sequence of events that brought us all to this realization. It is a historical account that also touches upon the fragility of human nature and teaches us all a valuable lesson about our own mortality.

It is only because of great and humble men we are here today

While I was not yet born when RFK and JFK were alive, I would have to say they are two of the greatest men in American history. Robert Kennedy brings his readers closer to a situtation that is almost beyond the scope of the human mind. His account of the Cuban Missile Crisis makes us realize how close we have come to the end and absolutely shows us that it is only because of great men we are here. This book reminds us how close we came to the end and the critical role Jack and Bobby played in bringing us back. I only hope that current and future leaders of the world read this account and understand what they understood...we are all mortal and we all love our children. Those are the things that will save us, Jack and Bobby knew that and it is obvious in this extrodrinary book.
