Gabriel's Gift is lighter entertainment, for though it concentrates on a fractured family, the reader knows throughout that it is only a matter of time before all will be reconciled. This is very much a comfy chair of a book, with colorful, witty characters enduring only minor shakeups in their lives before resuming their previous paths. There's Rex, an ex-glam rock star, now underemployed and recently evicted from the house by Christine, who's had enough of Rex's inactivity and worries about his impact on their son, Gabriel. Gabriel has a bear of a nanny to watch him as well as a gift that allows him to create real things just by drawing them, though this twist curiously remains largely unexplored. Gabriel's love for his dad and mum, a little bit of serendipity, and some responsibility on Rex's part (i.e., a job) helps to bring the family back together. Revealing and thought provoking

I read 'Intimacy' a number of years ago. I'm a slow reader, but I found myself on its last pages a mere two days after picking it up for the first time. I have since read it several more times, and sometimes still pick it up at random to read a page or two in passing. This book (its hardcover edition) inspired me to read more, and I searched for other novels that might touch me as 'Intimacy' did, but it wasn't until recently that I found another.

I like Kureishi's tone, I like this story: depressing and hopeful at the same time. It does feel, as others have said, very autobiographical, but I believe that's what allows the reader to relate so easily.

I admire the protagonist, and I believe that a great many readers will as well. Why? He does something which many of us think about at one point or another, but do not have the courage to do. He refuses to settle, to be trapped by a life devoid of true happiness and fulfillment. He believes that betrayal can be a hopeful act, that life goes on and has a greater than ever potential of being what we've always hoped it could be. He defies convention.

But whether you admire or hate him, your reaction to the main character and his choices in life will surely unveil to you something about yourself, and that is the true beauty of any good book... at least for me.

CLEAR SHARP AND INTROSPECTIVE

This is the 2nd book I have read by this author and although it does not entertain to the same extent as BUDDHA the writing is clear sharp, honest and original. The story of INTIMACY is very one dimensional and therefore reads very autobiographical. There is very little characterisation of anyone in the book except the protagonist, which almost confirms the autobiographic theory. I liked the honesty, the weakness, the selfishness, the sheer madness of the thoughts and situation - it all rings very true from what I felt. It was like reading someones diary almost so the voyeurs out there will love it. There is plenty to dislike in the book but I read it in a day and a half and i dont do that often, the ending for example is weak, pathetic and superficial, bit like the author really, I am not saying this in a bad way, the character is just not very likable, no wonder his life is a disaster! Read it and be glad that you are not him.

A serious writer

This is the only book I have read by Hanif Kureishi and I can say that he writes about serious issues in life, the kind that most people like to avoid because they are considered a taboo in our society. The book is composed of one long story and a couple of other short ones. The main story is about a married couple in which the wife is engaged in an extra marital affair and Kureishi has tried to analyze this problem that what makes married couples look elsewhere for happiness. I won't call it a sizzling story but it was a good timepass.

Truthful and long overdue

I am the radio operator, "Jibby" in this book. We owe a debt to Mihailovich and the Serbian people for saving so many American lives. The SERBIANS WERE THE ONLY ONES IN THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA THAT FED, SHELTERED, AND RISKED THEIR LIVES FOR THE AMERICANS. Mihailovich's abandonment by the Allies and subsequently being labeling a traitor was, in Winston Churchil's words, "...My greatest blunder in WWII..". I am proud of being a part of the Halyard Mission and, FINALLY, seeing the truth regarding Mihailovich's contributions in WWII being publicized. This book will go a long way in clearing his name.....and it is exciting, easy reading, and hard to put down once you start it.

A little-known story of a great WWII rescue

"The Forgotten 500: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All for the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II", by Gregory A. Freeman, is an engaging story of which I was not familiar prior to reading this book. It is the story of the hundreds of airman who were shot down on missions over the oil refineries in Romania which the Germans were tremendously dependent upon during the war. Many of these airmen ended up in Yugoslavia, some were captured by the Germans, a few ended up with Tito's forces, but many more ended up with the Serbian Guerilla forces under the leadership of General Draza Mihailovich. Those lucky enough to be with Mihailovich found themselves engaged in one of the greatest allied force rescues behind enemy lines throughout the entire war. This was OPERATION HALYARD, and that is the primary story told in the book. However, many other stories are told as well: the escape from Nazi occupied Serbia, the employment into the newly established OSS, the story of Allied Airmen and their aircraft. One of the tragedies at the end of the story is the Allied support of Tito over Mihailovich due to the many Soviet sympathizers s in the OSS and among the British forces. Mihailovich ended up being executed by Tito after the war. All and all, this is a very good read. If you think you know all the major stories of WWII, try this read. It may surprise you.

I have just passed the book, The Forgotten 500, on to my son in Iraq. What a terrific read and one I know that he and his fellow soldiers will enjoy. I cried, laughed and got very angery as I read this book. Those Airmen and the civilians who helped them return to their homes should never be forgotten. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in WWII history.

"Queen of the Hill"- What else could you say about a young woman of such grace? Many have loved and admired Lauryn for years and years and I can honestly understand why. Her style is so versatile, and her personality is so calm, that you can't help but join the " Lauryn Hill bandwagon" (ya know?) I say " Queen of the Hill" and I don't use those words lightly, because most people have read articles, many people have listened to her music, but when you meet her in person, the connection is so overwhelming, you do literally pinch yourself to see if it's a dream.

As a young worship leader in church, this book has truly helped me becoming an effective worship leader. I know without a doubt that each word in that book came from the throne room of God. Prophet Dominique is such an inspiration and a unique man of God with a dynamic anointing, whom truly seeks the face of God, trusting and believing in God for each word that was provided on each page. This book has indeed changed my life, and worship for me hasn't been the same. I've seen an increase in the level of my worship. At once a brilliant must-read and painfully redundant

I really had to struggle with what rating to give this. Simon Sinek's idea is astoundingly insightful, very helpful, and definitely worth the price of this book let alone the Kindle price. I'm inclined to think that the world would be considerably better off if more people lived by Sinek's simple idea.

On the other hand, the book is agonizing in its redundancy, often repeating the same examples many times over to make precisely the same point as the first time the example was used. I'm inclined to think that virtually everything Sinek wrote could have been stated in a 20-page article without leaving out anything important. I daresay it might be possible to do it in five pages. That's part of the beauty of the idea: it's incredibly simple while still being astoundingly powerful. But Sinek doesn't seem to have bothered taking the time to distill the idea down into its essence for straightforward presentation in this book. It reads a little bit like he took articles from his blog, stuck them in a large word-processing document, did some minor editing, and submitted the thing as-is for publication in order to create this book.

So, the idea is worth the cost of the book and the time to read it, but the book itself is, in my humble opinion, very poorly organized and needlessly long.

I would advise those who are interested in Sinek's ideas save themselves a great deal of time and a little expense by first watching his TED Talk:

This covers virtually all the core ideas involved. The one thing Sinek never does either in this presentation or in his book is spell out what "HOW" is. It's a bit confusing in large part because it's different for each of the two communication structures. In the "WHAT --> HOW" structure, "HOW" is "how we're different"; for instance, Dell has to argue that its computers are somehow better than (say) HP's and therefore specifies HOW they're better in order to compete against HP. On the other hand, in the "WHY --> HOW --> WHAT" structure, "HOW" is "how we enact our purpose (i.e. our 'WHY')".

As far as I can tell, if you're reasonably intelligent you can glean pretty much everything essential to Sinek's idea based on his TED Talk together with this understanding that "HOW" means something different in each of the two contexts he contrasts.

What you WON'T get from that is his rather in-depth, incredibly clear exposé of why the "WHAT --> HOW" communication pattern requires manipulating people to some degree or another and why that is by necessity unsustainable in the long run. That's not core to his point but it's certainly a nice supplement.

So in short, the book is a reasonable buy, certainly at the Kindle price, but do consider benefitting from Sinek's wisdom for free in 20 minutes first by watching his TED Talk. If you want more details, you can get the book, but understand that you're not likely to learn much more than what you could have figured out on your own between the talk and what I mention above.

Brilliant but laboured (and a little smug)

Having watched the TED talk (last year) and just last week saw Sinek speak I was keen to dive into this book for a bit more wow - but was sorely disappointed. If you have seen the TED talk there is a little new illustration here - but no new content.

The genius of simple and powerful ideas is that they are easy to get (if difficult to see until illuminated) and for this Sinek deserves 5 stars - but here he labours that beautifully simple nugget and tortures the reader with such repitition. We get it! (If there was a dollar for every time he says "people don't buy what you do they buy why you do it" you could buy many copies of the book! I actually have the audio book - read by Sinek and it all gets overlaboured and smug. How dumb does he think his audience is? My advice - watch the tead talk - skip the book - as it fails on his why - 'to inspire'!

For those faced with competition, price-war and customer churn, Sinek's book can provide great insights for developing a new long-term strategy to combat these issues once-and-for-all. Sinek explains that while your product's features may be replicated and commoditized, no one can copy the kinship and confidence that your customers feel when doing business with you. This is because those feelings come from intangible values and beliefs that only you share with your customers.

How does one create such kinship with customers? The book explains the Golden Circle concept, which shows business leaders how to inspire instead of manipulating customers or employees to act. Sinek explains that trust is built naturally when you target customers that understand and believe in your WHY. So, if getting repeat and word-of-mouth business is important to you, then use inspiration, not manipulation to get the sale. Also, when business leaders properly articulate their company's WHY to employees, it makes it easier for the employees to believe in what they are selling. When sales reps sound authentic, it builds trust and loyalty with customers. It all starts with WHY.

In light of the last decade of greed and short-term trading mentality with little regard for future consequences, I found myself wholeheartedly agreeing with Sinek's observations that there are no short cuts to long-term success. Manipulation may help achieve short term results, but long-run success is only achievable when leaders are ready to make short run sacrifices/investments and willing to account for long-term impact of their decisions from the start. There is much that our universities and MBA programs can do to teach these principles to the next generation of leaders. All and all, this book left me truly inspired. Beyond the tons of practical business insights, the mental framework that "Start with Why" provides can also make anyone a better communicator as a mother, father, husband, boss or just a decent human being.
