EARLS RESTAURANT started as a family-run business, launched by father and son, Leroy Earl "Bus" Fuller and Stanley Earl Fuller in the early '80s, and is also one of North America's most successful independent restaurant groups. Rebel Code puts Linux into historical and social contexts. Based largely on interviews with the main players and precise historical data (Linux kernel releases are dated to the second), it traces "free software" from its early '80s origin--with Robert Stallman's founding of the GNU Project--and takes it as far as the end of 2000--with GNU/Linux becoming a worldwide phenomenon that runs handheld PDAs, PCs and Macs, IBM mainframes, and the world's biggest supercomputers.

Glyn Moody charts every milestone in the development of the Linux kernel, from Linus Torvalds's first installation of Minix. The most recent previous review is now about three years old, so an update may not be out of place. This book is a decade old, published shortly after the turn of the millennium and, more importantly, a couple of years after Gnu/Linux and the open source movement finally hit the big-time; i.e., acceptance by, and endorsements from, some of the major players in the computer arena, like IBM, Sun, Dell, Intel, etc.

The author boasts that, at the time of writing, the Apache (open source) server software was used on about 25% of servers on the internet; today that figure has tripled to an astounding (approx.) 75% share! The Gnu/Linux operating system, largely fueled by the Ubuntu distribution and the Gnome and KDE desktops (GUIs), is used by a respectable share of the desktop computer community world-wide, and is growing at a healthy rate.

While the author's predictions for the future of Gnu/Linux and open source software was decidedly optimistic, it was still somewhat tentative. However, subsequent growth during the last decade has been phenomenal. Not only does it appear that open source software is here to stay; it may even eventually come to dominate over traditional costly, proprietary software. There is now no shortage of experienced computer users, myself included, who are willing to make the case that the Gnu/Linux operating system, the Apache server, and the Firefox browser are much superior to the offerings of their closed source, for-profit competitors (e.g., Microsoft and Apple).

This book is still an excellent place to start for anyone interested in both the history of, and philosophy behind, open source software. Here's where to learn about the formative years and the leading figures behind the movement, larger than life characters like Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, Eric Raymond, Larry Walls, etc. It's also a good place to learn just why it is that the open source method of creating software has been able to produce such superb products. Highly recommended.

The history of the development of Linux in detail

The book is mainly based on the information collected by the author from various people via e-mail, telephone or personal communication between September 1999 and September 2000, and the interview with Linus Torvalds at a critical juncture in his life, in December 1996, as well as other interviews with key players from the last three years.

The book begins with a story of Richard Stallman, who labored for years to create a Unix-like system, written from scratch that would be free. Hw worked alone at first; then he gradually received contributions from to others, including - thought neither of them knew it in 1991 - Linus, whose Linux program would provide the last major pieces still missing from Stallman's huge software jigsaw puzzle.

The book covers the GNU project from its formal beginning, when in January 1984 Stallman started working on Bison, which was a replacement for Yacc. Having limbered up with this relatively minor task, he moved on to one of the most important. One of the key elements of a Unix system is the C compiler. After an unsuccessful attempt, he returned to Emacs and released GNU Emacs in September 1984. In October 1985 he has founded Free Software Foundation and then proceeded with C compiler and the C library.

The book then describes the biography of Linus, his years at the university and his work on his operating system, his experience with Minix, quite popular at that time in academic area, and fight with Tanenbaum, the author of Minix. The book then brings out the history of the development of Linux in detail.

Besides Linux, this book covers Open Source movement in Netscape, the development of TEX, Perl, Cygnus, etc., and how big companies like IBM adopt Open Source software and contribute to its development.

I would also recommend "The Cathedral & the Bazaar" by Eric S. Raymond in addition to this book.

Englishly Witty and Full of Photos and Facts

The politics, events, dates, and discographies of Pink Floyd have been exhaustingly well-documented over the years, particularly on internet fan sites. But the first official history of the band by one of its members, drummer (and only member to remain in the band and never leave throughout its multi-decade run) Nick Mason, is worth the thirty bucks or so...as long as it's the only Pink Floyd biography you plan to buy in your lifetime.
Mason's structure of Pink Floyd's story is solid, even if his account of the more tense "battle of words" period from the late 70s to mid-80s leaves quite a bit to be desired, lacking a lot of juicy he-said/she-said gossip and tidbits.
Though Mason has scant songwriting credits under his marching-hammer belt buckle, "Inside Out" shows that he was still deeply involved in the creative process, even after self-imposed leader and bassist Roger Waters left the band in the 80s. Mason's wit and humor are distinctly English, sharp and articulate but never laugh-out-loud funny. His amusing but wise fashion of telling the story of one of the most celebrated rock bands on the planet make it a worthwhile read, but what really makes the giant book a good buy is the massive load of photographs, many previously unseen, from both Mason's own private archive and other sources.
The more thorough fans will appreciate the many bits of trivia they can pick up from reading "Inside Out"; as a Floyd freak myself, it took reading this book to discover that one of the considered titles for 1994's "The Division Bell" album was "Pow Wow," or that album designer Storm Thorgerson was nearly shot while trying to take pictures of the Egyptian pyramids for the "Dark Side of the Moon" sleeve. However, some fans may be compelled to skip over Mason's many details about stage and sound equipment.
"Inside Out" gets the story right, and coming from its most neutral member, it is an unbiased, honest and witty account of the history of Pink Floyd. Unless the other two surviving members, Roger Waters and David Gilmour, decide to collaborate on a new Pink Floyd historical document (which will happen when "Dark Side of the Moon" finally stops selling), Nick Mason's unbiased version is the only Floyd file you'll need for a while.

A very good but not quite definative addition. Excellent Pictures.!

Nick Mason's "Inside Out" is a nice history of the band with excellent pictures and written in a personal yet professional manner which makes it an enjoyable read. Although, I think there are a few better written books out there most notably "Saucearful of Secrets" and "In the Flesh" this book is a very close third and definately worth picking up if you are a Pink Floyd fan. The pictures do make the book the best from a photograph/story point of view and Nick comes accross as very astute even if just a little guarded. It's nice and very thick so its worth the money. Too bad I couldn't get a nice hardcover but the softcover is good enough. Thank-You Nick.

What a great follow up to the Steampunk Bible. This manual shows the creative thought trail blazed for us to follow. It shows new horizons for steampunker to blazer their own trail.

Thanks for stretching my ideas of retro future and the directions I can race off to.

Great for an introductory class

As someone who has spent nearly 30 years teaching philosophy I am always on the lookout for textbooks that have substance but are also accessible to the student without any previous background in philosophy. "Ethical Choices" by Richard Burnor and Yvonne Raley is one such book. Although not an in-depth study of ethical theory (nor does it claim to be), the book provides an easy-to-understand and generally accurate overview of moral relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, deontological ethics, natural law ethics, virtue ethics, the ethics of care, and religious ethics.

In addition, at the end of each chapter there are several brief case studies designed to allow the student to apply what he or she has learned in the chapter to practical issues. As a result, although "Ethical Choices" is primarily a text in theoretical rather than applied ethics, instructors who feel the need to stress application can use these studies as a way of accomplishing this goal. Along with these case studies, at the end of each chapter there is a set of "Thought Questions" designed to aid the student in further reflection on the issues covered in the chapter.

I would highly recommend this book as a text for an introductory class in ethics, particularly if the instructor supplemented the text with some primary source material.

Great learning tool for an intro into Ethics

Read this for a class I was taking. I must say you do learn quite a bit about Morality, Philosophy, Ethics, all in a concise and simple way with one philosophy flowing into another, each being compared and contrasted against one another. In the end Kantian ethics wins out according to the authors, at least that's how I perceived it. But it's all one gray area, very subjective, yet this book tries to remove subjectivity from the discussion, although it does, in fact, raise a few questions that are never completely answered which I believe every person must decide whether or not his or her own morality dictates a certain philosophy is indeed the morally righteous way to go.

About the Author
Joe Occhiogrosso is one of the most successful network marketing professionals in the world today. A converted life-long pyramid scam skeptic from New York City, he is one of the few people in network marketing history to build a seven-figure residual income in less than one year.

Joe graduated from Rutgers University with degrees in Economics and Philosophy - and the Mr. Rutgers bodybuilding title - at the age of 20. He immediately engaged on a ten-year wild ride on Wall Street trading in the 24 hour global currency markets for major banks.

After the birth of his first child, he started tiring of the one-hour-plus commute, along with the stress of the 24-hour currency trading markets, and decided to start his own traditional business in the suburbs. He was bought out by a group of private investors, and then started a title insurance agency and grew it to one the best in his home state.

For Joe, success begins and ends with others. At the end of the day, it is not about rising above others or leaving them in your wake; it is about how many people you bring along with you, Joe says. Ride your vision, give before you get, invest in yourself and others, and learn how to network.

Joe lives in northern New Jersey with his wife Annmarie, and their three children. Joe enjoys spending time with his family, playing baseball, and serving on the fundraising committee for St. Judes Childrens Hospital. He also participates in annual mission trips to underdeveloped countries.

After meeting Joe O last week, I purchased a copy of his book. All I can say is that it really spoke to me, this guy is the real deal. Not only is he humble, he is just a "regular Joe" and his experiences are real and sincere. I am proud to now call him my friend and one of my mentors. How he shares his story and how captures the true essence of network marketing is incredible. This book is a must read and can be the life-changer for anyone that reads it. Everyone that I bring into my organization will get a copy of this book to read. Thanks Joe and I look forward to celebrating success with you and taking that gift and blessing others.

they quit and give this business model a bad reputation as a scheme

This book truly explains the world of network marketing. Most people who get involved in network marketing from being a traditional employee believe they can become wealthy overnight. So when they fail ,because they do not give themselves the time to learn the right skills to succeed,they quit and give this business model a bad reputation as a scheme. This is far from the truth. This book through a story gives you the real feeling of a network marketer . From one person who feels this business is not for them , to someone who sponsors a successful person in this business , but quits before he gave himself a chance to also succeed from peer pressure from his co workers. I give this book a 5 star rating and a must read for network marketers.

A must have in any network marketer's library...

Network marketing has had its share of detractors over the years, but I believe the industry has found its champion in Joe Occhiogrosso. His mission, as witnessed by this book, is to give people an honest view of what it truly means to be a network marketing professional. Told from the vantage point of characters who have a range of success from newbies to seasoned veterans, this book is true to form on the highs and lows experienced by anyone who has ventured into network marketing. I highly suggest this book to anyone who has an entrepreneurial bone in their body and a vision of taking control of their lives and their financial destiny.
