ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Robert Graves (1895-1985) was an English novelist, poet, and translator of Classical Greek and Roman literature, and one of the most prominent English writers of the 20th century. In addition to novels and poetry, he published groundbreaking analysis of Greek mythology, as well as memoir. A scholarly alternative approach to the life of Jesus

Having grown up in an Episcopalian family in the Southeastern US, I am very familiar with Christ the Savior from St.John's gospel and the epistles of Paul. Graves offers the viewer two alternative interpreations of Jesus in his book,King Jesus. These two alternative views are based on Hebrew concepts of a political/military messiah and the mystery religion of the triple goddess, which requires the sacrifice of the goddess's consort to bless the land and people with his sacrificial blood. There is no doubt that these two world-views, religions, concepts were dominant in the Mediterranean Roman world. For example, St. Paul's epistles strongly condemn the mystery religions of the triple goddess, which he identies as Artemis (also known as Diana in Roman mythology).

I realize that my many fundamentalists Christian friends would find this book disturbing but I would invite them to read this exceptional historic novel to gain more insight into the Hebrew concept of a worldly military messiah destined to overthrow Roman domination or the concept of the consort of the triple goddess, destined to be sacrificed for the well being of the land and people.

First, the book is a political novel about the efforts of the Hebrew leadership to bring about the birth and development of a young man to be their military leader and savior. Jesus is the son of Mary and Herod's oldest son,Antipater, hidden in the home of Joseph until the time he will arise as the Hebrew ruler. Graves was a scholar of Hebrew religion and he brings his considerable knowledge of the Hebrew faith to the novel. Graves writes of a possible plot wherein the birth, schooling, and mentoring of Jesus were all part of a Hebrew plot to produce the Messiah that would defeat the Romans and bring about a Hebrew golden age of 1000 years.

Second,the book is a novel about the struggle between the patriarchial religion of the Hebrews and the cult mystery religions of the triple goddess, or the white goddess. This ancient religion has as the central deity a female goddess who is mother/birth, wife/consort/fertility, and death/destroyer. Graves has Mary the mother of Jesus, his cousin Mary (sister of Martha and Lazarus), and Mary Magdalene playing these roles. However, in the religion of the triple goddess or white goddess, a male plays the role of son, husband, consort, king, and finally human sacrifice to this triple goddess. Graves has Jesus move from the role of warrior king of the Jews to sacrificial king through the novel. Whereas Mary the mother of Jesus is a player in the Hebrew plot to support Jesus as the military Messiah, his wife and cousin Mary asks him to use his powers to raise his cousin (her brother) Lazarus from the dead. Jesus does this act but because he must now offer God a life for a life, he must offer his own life for that of Lazarus. This puts Jesus directly in the power and plot of Mary Magdalene (the layer-out) who requires the sacrificial death of her husband/consort to bless the world and its people. Graves was probably the foremost expert on the religions of the triple goddess and his scholarship helps maintain the internal consistency of the novel.

Finally, we are left with the question of whether Jesus' crucifixion was a triump of the feminist mystery religion of the triple goddess over the Hebrew messiah or whether Jesus' cruicifixion spelled the doom of the triple goddess as he emerges as the Christian savior.

Graves, an expert on Hebrew religion and mythology, classical history and mythology, and the canonical gospels as well as the Gnostic gospels, is certainly the scholar best suited to try to bring all this together in a fascinating historic novel consistent with the society and theology of the times. Graves was a highly creative and independent thinker and I have no doubt that this book will disturb my fundamentalists Christian friends - none-the-less it is a wonderful description of the world into which Jesus was born and the two major east Mediteranean religious philosophies that competed with Christianity at the time of his death.

The most fascinating Jesus novel out there

Reading this book is a rewarding challenge. It's weird, esoteric, and somehow simultaneously iconoclastic and reverent. As is often the case with Graves, it's clear that he's done a lot of serious research, and from there has gone off on his own curious tangents. (It looks like he got some material from Robert Eisler's book from the '20s, "The Messiah Jesus and John the Baptist"). Graves's methods drive some scholars crazy, because they want a clear line drawn between the research and the tangents. "King Jesus" is clearly more propaganda for Graves's "White Goddess" theology, but as propaganda it's great fun. Indulge Graves early on in the book--material that may seem pointless eventually does inform what follows. With few exceptions, the book is sympathetic to Judaism, but the exceptions should not be read as anti-Semitism; rather, the reader should recognize that Graves is equally discriminatory towards all religions where they don't gibe with his White Goddess-ism.

A brilliant, remarkable achievement

Easy reading this ain't, especially while you're first trying to get into it, but it's hard to think of a more rewarding way to spend your time and intellectual effort. The research is astonishing, the hypothesis is brilliant and revelatory, the theology flawless and the narrative lucid and inspiring. Moreover despite Graves' atheism the novel remains utterly respectful of Jesus Christ. A riveting book with which I expect to bore my friends by quoting for probably the rest of my life.

Good Advice on Challenges of Being In Relationship

Perhaps the most valuable pages in Togetherness are those that address the most important relationship in anyone's like - with yourself. Dale & Wald do an excellent job of explaining how most couples act out in relation with each other the issues that they should first address in their own development. The authors assert that "nothing in the Universe is as alluring as a heart that is open" and much of their advice aims at healing the wounded child within so that the adult can embrace another in a togetherness that is free and happy rather than struggling and co-dependent.

Much Needed Information for ALL Relationships

This book is not just about love relationships - everything written is applicable to all types of relationships. The easy to read format allows you to really think about what is written and apply the practices to all the relationships in your own life, starting with the relationship you have with yourself. I found it to be insightful, meaningful and empowering. A perfect read to improve all the relationships you have, heal yourself from those you no longer are a part of and move forward knowing new relationships will be better because of this book. Highly recommended.

Rare is the book that leaves one with an abundance of useful information. "Togetherness" is such a book. Well written, clear in meaning, and thoughtful, this book will be helpful to anyone who is having difficulty with his or her relationship or who may just be looking for guidance on how to improve what is already a very satisfying partnership. The intertwining of more practical aspects of couples therapy with the spiritual side of life makes this a very unique read. Once I closed the book on the last page, I really felt I looked at myself, my spouse, and our relationship with greater insight.

I like to know what my meal should look like

I am a cookbook fanatic and have probably more than my local library has. Yes, I use them all. Here is the problem with this cookbook. No Visuals. I like to know what my meal should look like. Also ingridients I never heard of.
Since I will not use the book that often it will go in my next garage sale. Sorry!

A Must Have for anyone who has had cardiac health issues!

My mother recently had double bypass surgery. Upon her return home she was very depressed with the prospects of never enjoying a good meal again due to all the restrictions the doctor gave her. This book gave her the motivation to push forward onto a healthy lifestyly where she could still enjoy meals. Very informative.

I was expecting there to be more recipes. This book is more of a manual for how to eat after cardiac trauma. It offers meal suggestions and says what you should be eating and the sort of lifestyle you should adopt. Was really hoping for a ton of recipes, since it calls itself a cookbook.

For Modern Philosophy Afficianados Only!

Eileen O'Neill's annotated, unabridged edition of Margaret Cavendish's Observations on Experimental Philosophy, (part of the Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy Series), is a solid contribution to the history of metaphysics. It has not appeared in print since its second edition in 1668. While considerable work on Cavendish as a literary writer, e.g. her letters, poems and plays, has been done in recent years, less has been done on her work in metaphysics. O'Neill's labors will undoubtedly change this fact. This modern edition makes this work accessible to scholars in the history of philosophy and philosophy of science. It offers critical annotations which situate and clarify this work for the modern scholar, although it may be the case that not enough is said about Cavendish's reliance upon the Scholastics. However, O'Neill does a more than respectable job cross-referencing Cavendish's philosophical arguments with classic specialists of the period in philosophy of science. Readers can look forward to a helpful bibliography as well.

O'Neill's 26 page introduction details Cavendish's political and social environment so that not only her philosophical contributions are reconstituted, but also the historical circumstances surrounding them. Cavendish represents one of many female writers in the mid-seventeenth century, but is the only one to publish works in philosophy under her own name. Thus Cavendish is an important figure on several fronts. Philosophically she outlines a system of natural philosophy, which rejects Aristotle, Hobbes and Descartes. Religiously, she proposes an atheistic system of nature and politically, she calls for a platform which includes women as cognitive, rational contributors to the problems of science and philosophy. This edition of Observations will appeal to all respective disciplines.

The strength of O'Neill's introduction is her discussion of the Stoic influences on Cavendish. O'Neill has done her research to this end. While her brief overview assumes a learned fluency with this era of philosophy, and remains silent about many aspects of the Observations it can still be useful for the disciplined novice. O'Neill is able to delineate how Cavendish's materialist system of nature, with its reliance upon animate, self-moving, non-divisible bodies harkens back to Stoicism. Further, she previews concepts which mature in Cavendish's writings and carry less resemblance to Stocism such as her bifurcation of the Stoics "active principle" into the "sensitive" and the "rational". The introduction also cashes out Cavendish's primary objections to Epicurean Atomism, and her reservations regarding a mechanistic account of natural change. O'Neill takes great care with this latter issue and sets out Cavendish's main arguments. If the introductory essay lacks for anything, it is a discussion about the scholastic influences on Cavendish. The format of the Obervations is clearly reminiscent of Aquinas' Summa, with the problem-response-objection-counter response style, yet no real mention of this fact is made. However, O'Neill does not ignore this issue as is illustrated in the several footnotes which allude to the Schoolmen.

O'Neill offers good footnotes with references to figures such as Hobbes, Boyle, Aristotle, Power, Bacon, Descartes and Hooke. Often, the references are to lesser known works by these authors. Thus, it is clear that serious Cavendish scholars will need to be especially familiar with these works. In this regard, O'Neill tends to offer more detailed and frequent annotations in the sections of Cavendish's work which consider issues in early modern philosophy of science and Atomism, than she does in the considerable section Cavendish spends on the issue of the problem of perception. There is no question that this well researched, documented and annotated edition will allow the labors of Cavendish to be revisited and her voice to once again be heard.

A former professional sports gambler and gaming columnist, Michael Konik has served as expert commentator on more than 100 televised poker broadcasts and penned several highly acclaimed books on gambling, including Telling Lies and Getting Paid, The Smart Money, and one of the Wall Street Journal’s “Five Best Gambling Books of All Time” — The Man With the $100,000 Breasts. Head games, in more ways than one

This is a terrific and involving book. Though it carries the Vegas Lit imprint and some of the novel takes place in that fabled land, the story's real home is inside the head of a fascinating, funny and scary man who has reached the end of his rope -- and then starts weaving a whole new one. Konik takes the concept of the unreliable narrator down some unsettling and yet hugely entertaining pathways. Konik knows intimately the psychical AND the psychic side of Las Vegas, taking advantage of that city's ongoing struggle between transformative dreams and bleak reality, as reflected in the mind of his lead character. A fine, blackly funny read.

Feel of a classic

First, Konik chooses his words carefully, making every one count. Second, he chose two very difficult genres: 1) Vegas, and how Vegas is a cliche of itself; 2) loser main character. Konik succeeds in being inside Vegas, making it fresh; and somehow (you'll have to read it for yourself) he makes his loser main character a winner. Some will automatically compare his lead character to Humbert Humbert but don't forget Ignatius J. Reilly (Confederacy of Dunces)--two classic losers who readers became attached to. This book, and Fear & Loathing, are the two best novels, by far, which take place in Las Vegas. Period.

Michael Konik hits it out of the park -- again.

Becoming Bobby is the story of a middle-aged man, bored with his job and wife. So one day he leaves both behind, assumes the identity his charismatic and successful alter-ago Bobby, and heads to an unspecified gambling city in the Desert. His new life is anything but boring. More important than the plot, Michael Konik has a way with words that makes every page a thrill to read and the book hard to put down. Not many authors are outstanding writers in both fiction and non-fiction, but with this, his first fiction book, Konik proves he can write well about anything. Just to be warned, this book has strong language and adult themes.
