About the Author
Gucci Mane, born Radric Delantic Davis, is a critically acclaimed, platinum-selling recording artist. He has released nine studio albums and dozens of mixtapes. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with his fiancé Keyshia Ka’oir. The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is his first book.

Neil Martinez-Belkin is the former music editor at XXL Magazine and has written extensively about contemporary hip-hop with a regional focus on Atlanta. He lives in Boston.

Wonderful!

David Small tells the story of his unhappy childhood in this graphic memoir. About 50 years ago, when Mr. Small was 14, he underwent surgery that rendered him mute for all intents and purposes and also resulted in his thyroid gland being removed. He believed that a cyst was being removed, but it turned out that the "cyst" was a tumor that had begun to grow as the result of the x-ray treatments performed on David when David was just an infant by his own father (who was a radiologist). At the time that David was an infant, radiological treatments were used to cure sinus and breathing issues, which David had as a child. As a result of the insane amount of radiology used, David developed cancer. For nearly a decade after his surgery, he couldn't physically speak above the level of a hoarse whisper, no matter how hard he trained his remaining vocal cords.

The fact that David's father gave him cancer is one of the devastating sad parts of the story; but there is a second theme that is just as devastating: the communication, or lack of it, that is apparent in David's family The fact that David was exposed to a high risk of cancer by his father isn't really discussed by David, his father OR his mother aside from a very, very brief conversation a few months after the surgery. In fact, it's almost as if David learned that he had cancer by accident and would have continued to believe that a cyst was removed if he hadn't accidentally stumbled upon it. Other communication was non-verbal - his mother only communicated her displeasure by a little cough that she had. She wasn't very adept at showing her love for her son, if she even loved him at all. It's also about having a voice - or finding an alternative method to having your voice heard when your original voice has been literally ripped from you without your knowledge or consent.

The book is really raw. My heart wrenched, particularly at the parts where David is flashing back to getting the high doses of radiation when he learns that he, in fact, was exposed to cancer by his father. Mr. Small has a way of illustrating the raw, strong emotions without words being necessary to convey what he intends. Needless to say, if you haven't figured it out yet, I loved how Mr. Small drew this book. While the story itself moves quickly because of the careful format, I urge you to slow down or go back after the first read through so that you can study the illustrations and really appreciate them.

Wow, a Searing Memoir

Do not let the fact that this is a graphic novel turn you off. It's not comic book/Watchman type art, this is pen and ink drawings.

This is a complete story, and, I'm not exaggerating, this is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. Most of it is told unflinchingly from the standpoint of David Small as a child, starting at age 6. His was not a happy household and the story includes a grandma, who, at one point, descends into physical abuse. I had, up to that point in the story, no sympathy with Small's mother. If she protected him from that point on from his grandmother, it isn't told. But her reaction when David said he was afraid of his grandma, because she was crazy, made me sit up and acknowledge something - David's mother's coldness didn't just spring out of nothing. There was something or somethings that helped shaped her that way.

Near the end of the story, we learn that there was more than one thing that shaped her unhappiness. David acknowledges on the last pages, his later "maturity, reflection and some family research" helps him at least understand his mother.

It's not an excuse for not loving your own son, but it helps. It's not an excuse for his father enabling his mother, either. But read the story and make up your own mind. There is no whining; there is no using the past as a crutch. The story starts, I think, in the 50's, and medical knowledge and sociological acceptance were much different than they are now. Notice, I'm trying not to give too much away - I don't want to spoil it for you when you pick up this book.

Finally, I'd like to mention that David's imagination, which oftentimes plagued him as a child, also allowed him to write and illustrate this memoir, which may have been cathartic. Oh, and in case you're wondering, the "Stitches" did not result from abuse. At least, not the stitches in his body.

Much recommended.

Could not put it down

A graphic memoir, Stitches, is compelling. I want to know how David Small was able to turn his back on his, in every sense, damaging childhood and provide this beautiful hug-evoking work.

I wonder if high school readers could benefit from a sensitive guided discussion of the behaviors of the parents, and effect on their children. The drawings are triggers for more thought, even after completing the book.

Great for all kinds of relationships

This book is amazing, every page has something you can learn, or be reminded of. The first page I turned to said in essence that if you are not in a loving relationship, it is due to an unloved part of yourself that will not allow you to be loved! So often we blame others for our lot in life, when the things that need to change are inside of us. Ghandi said, Be the change you wish to see in the world. This empowering book is about doing that.

Hard to follow but...

Our experience so far has been a mixed bag....the overall rating we would give to this material is 4 stars.We have to add a caution though that you NEED to be patient and open and, most of all, ready to WORK at understanding these concepts and ideas. The basic premise is great but upon reading the material you may find that the Hendrick's tend to forget that perhaps many of us do not have years of experience in this area. A much clearer and more concise (if possible) plan/instruction would be a good start. Perhaps include some more examples of how others have used these ideas as well. Once we read the material a few times it is starting to make more sense....again..overall we give this a good rating and have recommended this to others already.

Worth it for a set of problems. Poorly put together in many places.

Not well formatted on the Kindle. Also doesn't set up the questions very well. For example, there is a section titled "Bridge Matching - n cities are on the northern bank of a river and n cities are on the southern bank. You can only build a bridge between cities of the same number.". Then it just jumps into the solution. From reading the solution, you see that there was actually a question in there, but as stated it's not obvious what's being asked. In the palindrome examples, DP is used when a pair of nested loops would have done just fine with no storage overhead, and would be easier to come up with. Then there are some times when complexity is spoken of, without mentioning space or time. That would be fine if it was implicitly time complexity, but it's space complexity that's being implicitly referred to.

I have enjoyed working through each problem.They are fun. But the book could have used a lot of editing.

More than anything, I enjoyed the quality of code. C++ implementation at its best.

Issues :
At first, I was annoyed with the way the kindle version came out - Character spacing, page layout made it annoying, despite the quality of problems and the way the code was structured.
A Physical book made it comfortable to read, without getting distracted by the page layout issues in the Kindle version.
Note to Author : It would be really helpful if Kindle versions of the book had proper page layout and structured code snippets like Scott Meyers C++ kindle version.

In 1976 I made a documentary about the antiquities of Mesopotamia. When I was filming in the Louvre Museum and the British Museum, I discovered the truth about where all the legends of the Bible had come from. It took me many years to come to the realization that the original language of the Scriptures was not Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek; the language of the Scriptures was the first language ever recorded in history. It is called by the oldest Church in existence, "Leshana Atiqah," or the Ancient Tongue. The original language of the Bible evolved from drawings, symbols and finally the alphabet. It is, therefore, necessary to go back to the roots of all the words from the beginning of recorded history to understand the Scriptures accurately. This is not simple, but it helps that a translator should be a native speaker of the original language (in its modern vernacular.) Even though the ancient language of the Scriptures is based on thousands of years of development, it helps to be able to pronounce the language correctly. This is where my translation has produced the best version of the New Testament, and of the Old Testament, as I continue to translate the Old Testament Books. In the footnotes to my translation I provide the literal Aramaic idioms, expressions, figures of speech or grammatical constructions. The actual text of my translation is normally of the idiomatic translation. Whenever there is an idiom, I follow up with a footnote to provide the literal wording. However, sometimes the original idiom in the Old Tongue (Ancient Aramaic) is clear enough, and in such cases I note in the footnotes that the "idiom is retained." Then I give the idiomatic translation of the word or phrase in English. Another peculiarity of my translation is that it seems archaic to some people. This cannot be helped. It is not that I'm deficient in my English, but rather I have chosen to render the English language translation as close to the original text as possible (leaving out no words whatsoever) -- this being the first accurate translation of the Scriptures ever. I do not leave out anything of the original Text or smooth over anything; it is all there, word for word, both in the literal and the idiomatic wordings. My literal footnotes are, therefore, usually ungrammatical, but that is deliberate. The main body of my translated Text is idiomatic, but not idiomatic at the cost of altering the meaning. I opted to leave some of the Aramaic flavor intact and maintain the wording of those expressions and phrases that did not have an equivalent English language stylistic substitute. The manuscripts from which I translate are from the Ancient Church of the East, one of the first Churches that emerged out of Jerusalem during the Apostolic Age, in the First Century of Christianity. I'm a descendant of the families that followed in the footsteps of the Apostles of Eashoa Msheekhah (Jesus the Messiah.)

Good as a check and balance

This was the first Aramaic translation of the bible I was aware of. Since then, I have added:

George M Lamsa's translation of the Holy Bible,
Joseph Pashka's Aramaic Gospel and Acts
Janet Magiera's NT translation
Rev David Bauscher's Aramaic NT with Psalms and Proverbs, and so on, including
the works of Nicholas Klotz which I find is gnostic and not what ejusdem generis with mainstream Aramaic translations, notably Lamsa's various works and later updated posthumously.

Victor Alexander's translation has a little gnostic flavour to it. It is on the marginal fringe of Aramaic translations. Lamsa's work can be read like a later version of the KJV, but not this one. Since there is no standard Aramaic translation, I find Victor Alexander's work to be a good balance to the rest.

The price of this work is twice the price of Lamsa's translation and is thus expensive by contrast, and compounded by the absence of the Old Testament found in Lamsa's translation. Both bibles are however of similar size and this is because of the large number of footnotes in the Victor Alexander translation. But for a niche market product, it is very reasonably priced.

There is no publisher for this version, nor are there other contributors, it may represent Victor Alexander's own views. Biblical scholars are often capable of extraordinary feats, like Dake's KJV for instance.

The footnotes are quite redundant. The footnotes are unreadable cross references, useless unless you really want to dig deeper. My impression is that they are there to justify the translation. It sheds no light to the non-scholar, and compared to Janet Magiera's version (which reads best if you have OCD for layout) it is highly impersonal. Janet Magiera's two line footnotes gives more of a personal interpretation than the huge chunks of footnotes found in the V. Alexander translation.

The layout of the printed V. Alexander work leaves much to be desired. The margins are all over the place. It is made in the USA, Lexington, KY. It is dated 23 February 2011. At last, a bible printed in USA in recent times, which explains the high price and the slightly shoddy manufacturing standard.

I find Janet Magiera's work to be much clearer. Victor Alexander's tranches of footnotes may be useful, but the way Janet Magiera explains how she came to the translation with charts and different prints is more appealing to me.

However, the existence of an independent work in the area of Aramaic translations is important for a more balanced overall view. The closest to a "standard" KJV counterpart in Aramaic translations would be Lamsa. Victor Alexander's translation would not be a first choice for anyone venturing into Aramaic translations. Lamsa's is the best value by far, although Janet Magiera's is so well set out it blew me away (except for the part where Magiera's does not have the OT). Victor Alexander stays mainstream, and is nowhere as "gnostic" as Klotz (Klotz is a Sufi Muslim).

I wanted one with everybody's name as it traditionally occurs in the KJV bible. They are not translated from Aramaic in this version. Also the name of each book does not occur at the top of each page which makes it hard to quickly find verses. Because of these things, you cannot haul this around as a substitute for other standard versions of the New Testament.

Review of Using CiviCRM by Joseph Murray and Brian P. Shaughnessy

In a nutshell: this is the book I really wish I'd had when we'd first set up our CiviCRM system. It would have saved us a huge amount of time that was wasted by going down paths that we'd later had to backtrack on. But, even better, although we've now been actively using CiviCRM for a few years, I still learned an enormous amount about this complex system by reading through _Using CiviCRM_; this book will _still_ save us a huge amount of time, but now I can appreciate it better!

CiviCRM has its own online documentation, but that document, typical of open-source software documentation, is choppy, not always clear, and often seems written for someone who is already intimately familiar with the system. This book, on the other hand, is solid, comprehensive, and without "talking down" to the reader, pitches its explanations at those with not much familiarity. (That was certainly needed for me.)

Many technical books about software fall into one of two bins of narrowness of approach: either they focus on technical minutiae without creating an overall worldview to fit those details into. Or they focus on a small number of test scenarios with limited overlap to other usages. _Using CiviCRM_ seems to strike the right balance, with plenty of technical detail and test scenarios to be sure, but throughout there is an emphasis on a high-level understanding of the general capabilities of the system and how it can be mapped to many different organizational needs.

In a way, this book is not just a primer on CiviCRM itself; it is also a pretty good discussion of how to manage constituent relations for any nonprofit organization--and then, how CiviCRM can be incorporated into that management plan.

One of the hardest jobs for a user setting up a CiviCRM system is figuring out how to map the organization's use cases to the software. CiviCRM is a complex system with many dependencies among its components: decisions you make early on can have far-ranging impacts in unforeseen ways down the road. The best strategy for minimizing future surprises is to understand as thoroughly as possible the "CiviCRM Way" of doing things; and the best way to do that would be, in my opinion, to read this book from cover to cover before doing anything else.

Using CiviCRM for development and consulting

I'll definitely keep Using CiviCRM on the top shelf of my e-Library. I plan to use it in my role as a developer and management consultant. It won't replace the programming details of the online CiviCRM documentation, but it's a valuable learning and planning tool, especially for the `big picture.' I was drawn by the fact that the authors have extensive, practical experience with CiviCRM and associated software project management.

As a developer, I will probably read Using CiviCRM several more times and keep it handy as a reference. (It provides good project management and software development advice in general.) If I follow my own advice, I'll read Chapter 2 (Planning Your CiviCRM Implementation) whenever I start a new nonprofit site.

The most useful `feature' of Using CiviCRM for a developer is the collection of use cases, i.e., practical examples and tutorials. I'd been down many of those roads before I read the book, so I'm not likely to repeat them, but I can see how they would have been useful before I learned the hard way how CiviCRM does things. When the time comes for me to learn some others, I'll know where to turn. I hope I take the time to practice with each one first. It should be well worth it.

As a consultant, I will recommend Using CiviCRM to clients as a planning tool for CRM in general. This book has given me the ability to explain to clients what needs are required and what they may be missing before any development starts.

I'm past the point where I could go through Using CiviCRM cover-to-cover like a text book to learn the ins and outs of CiviCRM. That said, I like a newbie's chances with that approach. It can't beat experience, but it walks you through the many steps of what/why/how an organization can utilize the power of CiviCRM. It can't (and doesn't pretend to) replace CiviCRM's own online documentation. Typical of open-source software documentation, the online docs seem written for someone who is already intimately familiar with the system. Experienced users will always need its up-to-date details.

Of all the CiviCRM books I've read, Using CiviCRM is the only one I've found that explains things in both languages: developer and client. It's realistic, not idealistic. It does a good job of praising what CiviCRM does well and warning the reader about the pitfalls. (I also noted with interest that David Geilhufe reviewed the book. That lends credibility.)

I'm looking forward to Using CiviCRM for years to come. I expect it will help me guide clients in CRM and guide my own CiviCRM development. It will complement the `on-the-fly' CiviCRM docs well. My clients at all levels of expertise will find some benefit from it, as well.

well written, read before, during, and after installation

Very useful resource for non-profit volunteers (e.g. me) and staff who are thinking about using CiviCRM.
This book is now about 2 yrs old, but almost all the advice is still valid (Oct 2013)
I found the CiviCRM online documentation quite good, but without practical tips and useful opinions which are offered in this book. Just being aware of the best way to implement a feature (and why the alternatives are sub-optimal) makes the book a worthwhile investment.
