conjure 3D Miles up from our memories

Listen to This is the third book of the making of the Miles Davis masterpiece, following to Ashley Kahn’s Kind Of Blue (2000, Da Capo Press) and Yasuki Nakayama’s the Truth Of Agharta And Pangaea (2011, Kawade, Japan.) While latter two books focusing on the moment of creation and the inside stories, Victor Svorinich tries to conjure 3D Miles up from our memories. His analysis of climate, preparation, music and post production depicts how only Miles really knew what he was looking for and endeavored in recreating the music in his head. He says Miles served as the conceptualist for Bitches Brew, and placed an emphasis in expanding upon small clumps and creating new composition out of them. In this sense, he seems to stand by Miles’ side against Zawinul’s claim as an original composer. Uniqueness of this book is containing verbal evidences from photographers. They are favorable to Miles as they successfully captured Miles. Svorinich writes Miles’ incredible will to achieve at any cost makes the prince of darkness a charismatic, timeless figure. From an every sound of his trumpet, we can feel a layer of warmth, beauty, and romanticism. Whatever the method, Svorinich stresses, it had to come out from underneath the shyness, the darkness, and the tough skin which life gave Miles.

Would like to point out one misunderstanding by Svorinich. Agharta is recorded in Osaka. (not Tokyo show, p152) Agharta is a record of matinee (start 4:00pm local time), while Pangaea is the second performance of the same day (start 7:00pm local time). Sony got Columbia’s approval of live recording for the limited Japan sales only, assigned Japanese engineer for this project. Getting a good reputation from Japan, Columbia decided sales of Agharta in America. However, facing severe comment from critics, they abandoned producing Pangaea in America. There was a controversy between Japanese and American engineers about the cutting level for this product as in p110. These two records still have some popularity in the Japanese market. Notwithstanding his physical condition at that time, Miles sparkles here and there.

I used to not listen to Miles post 60s. I am more into straight ahead jazz. This book has broadened my horizons. I hadn't realized the influence of the Bitches Brew album until reading the book. And because of Svorinich, It's all I've been listening to for weeks. Well done.

A story you will enjoy

Excellent well-written book that the reader can easily get into and care about the characters. A definite love story for the true at heart romantic. Dan Sexton can relate his characters to anyone who has experienced falling in love.

`That night on the golf course...'

Successful author and publisher Rick Bettencourt brings back on stage Dan Sexton, a writer new to many of us, in a the completed version of his earlier brief novella HANDY MEN DO IT BETTER: the new completed full length, `fleshed out' version is now called THE HANDY MAN CAN, and the steam does indeed rise.

Florida, contemporary times. Jake Honeywell is a 23 year old `blond, green-eyed, six foot two' hunk of a landscaper and in between conversations with his sister and brother he meets 28 year old Cory Hamilton, a hunky golfer from North Carolina who flips real estate for a living. Both men are conflicted about coming out but together they manage to be honest and the results are spontaneous and sensual.

Dan Sexton has the solid approach in writing male erotica to make sure that the characters he manipulates are not clones but real men with real conflicts, family and lives beyond the moments of encounters. He introduces maternal alcoholism, DUIs, and the needs of Jake that prompt his moving out of his humble Florida family home. Then realities rise - Cory has a girl in North Carolina and moves back. Jake shares a small apartment with a straight guy Steve, but of course eventually Cory is free and Jake is longing and they start their sensual relationship all over again - with phone sex! And does it build r=form there! This is steamy, raw and rough - just what you might expect form a Handyman - or a man who is `handy'.

This is a good `coming out' story written by a lad who seems to have the talent to pursue longer novels. Dan Sexton writes well and has this particular manly genre down well. Grady Harp, April 15

One of the most realistic books I have ever read with a "I didn't see that coming" ending.

If there was ever an ending I didn't see coming in a book, it would be this one. Wow is all I have to say. I just finished the book minutes ago and am still in shock over how it ended. I just wasn't expecting it AT ALL.

Different Roads by Lori L. Clark is about Jacqueline, a girl who makes every wrong decision possible. Maybe because of her parents' divorce at an early age, maybe because she was raped by her boyfriend, or her insane drug and alcohol use. Jac was going down the wrong path for a very long time. Jac reunites with a boy she met when she was just 15 years-old years later. He was never a boyfriend but Jac was always very intrigued by Seth and his amazing blue eyes. Now the two are both single and begin a relationship, finally and Jac is in a good place in her life. It is sweet and tender, loving relationship. I loved the two together. Sometimes good things end for no reason and Jacqueline is left heartbroken. She begins to date Damon; the town's bad boy with good looks who gets Jac's mind off of Seth. I honestly felt sorry for her. Losing her virginity the way she did, losing her good friend Brad in an accident, losing Seth and ultimately being with Damon. The cards were stacked against her.

Different Roads deals with real issues such as death, date-rape, and domestic violence. It is a tough read with topics you do not read about often. I devoured this book in less than two hours, I couldn't put it down. I just kept waiting for Seth to return to Jacqueline so she can finally be happy. I wasn't crazy about any of the characters, they are drank too much in my opinion. Jacqueline wasn't my favorite female lead but I will say this book is real in every way, as real as any book could possibly be. I am still in utter shock over the ending, seriously... wow.... The book is worth reading just for the ending alone.

I give Different Roads 3.5 Stars.

Not your normal love story

If you are tired of reading books that are completely predictable this would not be one of them. Yes there is a love story enter-twined in it but it is so much more. The writer has her main character going through a lot of trials that most authors are too afraid to talk about. For anyone who has gone through any of these things it gives these topics more light and shows that it can happen to anyone. For anyone who has the idea that the ending is too harsh and that she shouldnt capitalize on it, this is what happenes in real life so get over your judgemental ways.

Wonderful New Adult Contemporary

I devoured this book in a matter of hours. It was full of passion, emotion, trauma, and craziness and I couldn't put it down.

It's difficult to put into words how I feel about the book. In some ways, it was a complete and utter train wreck. In other ways, it was full of love and passion. The characters are great and terrible at the same time and constantly made terrible decisions that I both hated and understood. It was an edgy read because the characters and scenarios resembled real life and watching people drink themselves silly and make terrible decisions was nerve wracking. But the characters aren't completely terrible that they are annoying. They all have redeeming qualities. Which is why it was so frustrating!

Fans of Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire will probably love this book. It's full of that kind of edgy, nerve wracking train wreck passion. Terrible things happen to Jaq, but she's resilient and even when she's making terrible decisions, she's feisty and wonderful. There are heartbreaking moments and steamy moments and it was the kind of book that tugs you every which way. I definitely recommend it to fans of the New Adult Contemporary genre. It's a relatively new term, but this book fits right in as an edgy and mature story involving young characters trying to begin their lives as adults.

A "glimpse"...

British historian Jessica Douglas-Home has written a book about her grandmother's trip to India as a young woman in 1911. Her book is short and is a compilation of her grandmother - Lilah Wingfield's - diary of her journey and the photographs she took along the way. "A Glimpse of Empire" is a glimpse, a small peek, at the British Raj and a candid look at some of the players - both native and British - who were important at the time.

Lilah Wingfield was the daughter of two wealthy families and grew up on the Irish estate - Powerscourt - of her father's family outside Dublin. Her mother's family owned Holkham Hall, in Norfolk. (Although she doesn't write about them, Lilah's mother's family was part of the Digby family, which produced such intrepid and fascinating women as Jane Digby, in the early 1800's, and Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward Harriman, in the 20th. Both are worth reading about and have been the subjects of excellent biographies.)

In 1911, the year after succeeding to the British throne upon the death of his father, Edward VIII, King George V and his wife set off for India to be crowned Emperor and Empress of India. They were to be honored for a week of celebration in Delhi, called the Royal Durbar. Lilah, at the age of 23, decided to go to India with friends and attend the Durbar and then travel around the country. She was looking for an adventure and a two month trip to India fit the bill. She and a friend and two chaperones left London in November of 1911 - and Douglas-Home includes an excellent map of the entire journey - by ship, carrying a notebook and a camera. She returned to England a few month later, both the diary and camera filled with evidence of the wonders she saw and the people she met. The diary was discovered by Jessica Douglas-Home and her siblings many years later and, combined with the photos, tell an intriguing story of India.

The Royal Durbar was a week of parties and ceremonies, set in a field and covered with the ornate tents of those local rulers who had come to Delhi to attend the coronation of the royal couple. Lilah and her friends were invited to many of the parties of the Indian royalty but also observed life among the common people in the weeks after the Durbar, when she traveled thousands of miles around the country by train, car, and horse cart. She saw and was awestruck by the Taj Mahal, as well as many other sites she visited. She was entertained and cared for by members of the British-Indian community - soldiers, government officials, merchants - who were an important part of the Raj. But she also made a point of looking at the Indians - from the crowds in the streets to the Begum of Bhopal, one of the few Indian women rulers.

Jessica Douglas-Home's book about her grandmother and her journey should not be read as a macro view of India at the time, but rather a micro view. A view, by a single woman, armed with camera and pen, who captured a small, but interesting piece, of Raj India.

Expecting Adam is an autobiographical tale of an academically oriented Harvard couple who conceive a baby with Down's syndrome and decide to carry him to term. Despite everything Martha Beck and her husband John know about themselves and their belief system, when Martha gets accidentally pregnant and the fetus is discovered to have Down's syndrome, the Becks find they cannot even consider abortion. The presence of the fetus that they each, privately, believe is a familiar being named Adam is too strong. As Martha's terribly difficult pregnancy progresses, odd coincidences and paranormal experiences begin to occur for both Martha and John, though for months they don't share them with each other. Martha's pregnancy and Adam (once born) become the catalyst for tremendous life changes for the Becks.

Focusing primarily on the pregnancy but floating back and forth between the present and recent and distant past, Martha Beck's well-written, down-to-earth, funny, heart-rending, and tender book transcends the cloying tone of much spiritual literature. Beck is trained as a methodical academician. Because of her step-by-step explanation of her own progress from doubt to belief, she feels like a reliable witness, and even the most skeptical readers may begin to doubt their senses. When she describes an out-of-body experience, we, too, feel ourselves transported to a pungent, noisy hawker center in Singapore. We, too, feel calming, invisible, supporting hands when she falls. Wickedly funny and wrenchingly sad memoirs of a young mother awaiting the birth of a Down syndrome baby while simultaneously pursuing a doctorate at Harvard. Sociologist Beck, now a columnist for Mademoiselle and a regular on the television show Good Day Arizona, became pregnant with her second child in September 1987, a time she and her husband now refer to as ``the month It All Went To Hell.'' To put it mildly, the unexpected pregnancy complicated their busy lives and academic careers. At the time, Beck kept a voluminous and detailed journal of her thoughts, conversations, and experiences, which provided the basis for these memoirs. Early in the pregnancy, Beck began having paranormal experiences that took auditory, visual, and tactile form. In what she refers to as ``the Seeing Thing,'' she would see brief, vivid images of where her husband was on his frequent trips to Asia. Calming voices spoke to her (and to her husband) in times of stress, and invisible helpers rescued her and her young daughter from a burning building. A Mormon turned atheist, Beck cannot explain the presence of comforting spiritual beings during her pregnancy, but she accepts them as real. Once Adam was delivered, she no longer felt ``like the focus of all that magic.'' Adam himself became the source of magic in her life, teaching her values unlike those she had learned at Harvard. In her son she sees wisdom, beauty, and a way of looking at the world that is astonishing and joyous. Besides a sense of humor that pokes as much fun at herself as anyone, Beck has both a sharp eye and a sharp tongue. Her portraits of Harvard academics, omniscient doctors, and uptight in-laws are priceless. Alot of hyperbole here

This is the story of a woman's spiritual awakening after learning she will give birth to a disabled child. We see Ms Beck's transformation as she becomes open to the miraculous, seeing the hand of "God" in difficult circumstances. While some of it is touching, a lot of it seems contrived and disingenuous. To be fair, such experiences are highly subjective, especially under extreme emotional and physical duress, as Ms Beck was undergoing at the time. I can accept this and suspend my credulity up to a point. The trouble is, 99% of my supernatural experiences, as I experienced them, wouldn't make for an interesting book, because they consisted of God quite plainly directing me to do the dishes, vacuum, go to work and take out the trash. From that perspective, I find some of Ms Beck's descriptions disturbing and even weird.

Ms Beck engages in a near constant and hypocritical diatribe against Harvard throughout the work. It is hypocritical because Ms Beck wants to both denigrate the school, and get intellectual credit for going there. Which is it? The book would be vastly improved by removing 90% of the Harvard references, but then it would be a short book. Readers are subject to page after page after silly page emphasizing various negative stereotypes about the culture at Harvard. Everyone is a pseudo-intellectual, perfection is the only reasonable goal, there is no humanistic element, it is all cold, hard and calculated pressure. An ardent feminist supposedly chided poor Martha for her pregnancy related nausea, saying that nausea and pain in childbirth are myths invented by evil men to oppress women.  Do you believe this really happened? I do not. Then, upon hearing mention of a "Smurf", and allegedly being unfamiliar with the cartoon, the classmates all pretended to know of the eminent "Dr Smurf". That anecdote may be true, or more likely it isn't. One thing I know is not true is her description of the Winter Session.

Almost midway through the memoir, Ms Beck launches into a specific description of the true horrors of Harvard, tortures no doubt invented by those joyless Puritans centuries ago. Unlike every other college in the country, according to Ms Beck, Harvard doesn't finish it's fall semester with exams a few days before Christmas. No, the exams are given in January, forcing students to forego a relaxed holiday at home, making them lug all their books for further study and more pressure, pressure, pressure. Except none of this is true. Harvard, like many schools, has a Winter Session, a 2 week optional enrichment class in January. According to their website, past course titles have included things such as " Yoga Laughter" and " Conversations in Wining and Dining". Sounds heavy, no? According to their published academic calendar, their fall semester exams are given in mid-December. Who are we to believe?

The book has some redeeming qualities. There are some moving moments here, such as when her husband John meets with his esteemed mentor, who tells him they should abort their child. John has a vision, for lack of a better word, of the professor as a hamster in a cage and as a mortal and finite being who is destined to die someday. Ms Beck did a good job of describing this scene, without making it sound too wacky and hard to believe. Unfortunately, the book is uneven in its' descriptions.

At the time this book was published nearly 20 years ago, angels were a big fad, which has since dissipated. Ms Beck undoubtedly capitalized on it with the help of her publisher, as she has admitted the story of her pregnancy was fictionalized. She is now quite a wealthy woman and identifies as gay. Martha Beck has had a lot of epiphanies in her life and at times she writes well. But please do not take this book too seriously, if you actually read the entire thing.

BS as non-fiction

I was sucked into this book thinking that Beck's over-the-top descriptions had some connection to truth, as it is categorized as "non-fiction." Turns out a little research reveals that Beck was unable to peddle this as fiction (as she originally tried) and found success calling this real. Even believers in supernatural or otherworldly things should raise eyebrows as the things she passes off as true. Never mind the hands and the voices; this woman embellishes everything. I urge any reader to Google Martha Beck and judge for yourself if a woman with her history has any credibility in the "I see dead people" genre.

This book is downright manipulative. I gave her the benefit of the doubt initially, allowing her to attempt to set herself up as credible before she began with the crazy talk. I share her distaste for the over-intellectualized pretentious Harvard types, but she beat that dead horse like nothing I've ever seen. But what really frosted my rump was that she clearly hates everything about Harvard, yet uses her degrees over and over and over when it suits her. For instance, if you look at her own bios in various online locations, her Harvard pedigree is peddled prominently. Hypocrisy at its finest.

I also find her baring her soul in the book to be not only tiresome, but riddled with selective memory. For instance, she never disclosed that her husband had told her he was gay before they married. That little nugget would've been helpful to know during the part when he tells her he almost left her. She spun it like it was all because of her attitude about the impending birth. Nonsense. They have since divorced and are now with other people: He's now living as a gay man, and she's now a lesbian.

There were many other parts in the book that are clearly exaggerated or lies, and they didn't have to be. Sticking to the truth would've worked just fine and still conveyed her points. For instance, she refers to books by name in the Harvard Coop. I forget what the titles were, but they were absurdly titled. She didn't say it was a joke or embellished. There are no such books in existence and never were. One might think that's a small thing to take issue with, but I think it's indicative of how willing she is to create facts to make her story more compelling, small and big. That's called lying.

I have so many other criticisms of her book, but I doubt that people will read this review if it's any longer! The bottom line is that I can't enjoy a book when it's billed as "a true story" but nothing about it rings true.

Opening up to the miraculous

I loved this book insanely.

It's about transforming from a person-who-has-it-all-figured-out to a person who opens up to the miraculous.

"We will all be less hurt by opening--opening our hopes, our delights, our sorrows, our shattered and reborn dreams--than we will if we remain closed."

And here's why:

"Angels, or for that matter any forms of goodness, function like water; they run into any opening they are given."

I highly identified with over-valuing of intellect, planning and will-power...and then all of that changing in the face of life crisis. It is crisis that teaches us what really matters. It also opens doors to rooms we didn't even know existed.

As she began to trust herself to make a new life, "Some people told me I'd thrown my life away. They were right. But the life I threw away never fit me well... In the [new] life ... everything was transmuted into its opposite: grief turned out to be joy wearing a flimsy mask; danger turned into deep security; disability became genius; and death, the ultimate catastrophe, shimmered, shifted, and showed itself as just another sort of birth."

About the Author
David Bornstein is a journalist who specializes in writing about social innovation. His first book, The Price of a Dream: The Story of the Grameen Bank was selected as a finalist for the New York Public Library Book Award for Excellence in Journalism. His articles have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly and the New York Times, and he co-wrote the P.B.S. documentary "To Our Credit." He lives in New York City.

People Who Have Tried to Change the World

Bornstein's "How to Change the World" is a love letter to Ashoka, an impressive and arguably very successful organization that identifies and supports social entrepreneurs throughout the world. Throughout the book, Bornstein provides a primer on Ashoka, its founder and methodology, as well as a number of success stories. He begins with a well-researched and interesting explanation about how the social entrepreneurship movement - or the citizen sector, as he calls it - found its sweet spot for expansion in the late 20th century. His narrative style is not nearly as compelling as first-person stories, such as "The Blue Sweater" (Novogratz, 2009), or even "Half the Sky" (Kristof & WuDunn, 2009). If each featured social entrepreneur had written a first-person account, this may have provided a more compelling read. One obviously missing component of Bornstein's vignettes is an acknowledgement of failure. On their respective roads to success, what significant missteps did these entrepreneurs take? What did they learn from those mistakes and failures?

This book may be a wonderful resource for people who are not yet familiar with social entrepreneurship or the amazing work that has been done by citizen sector individuals and organizations worldwide in the last 30 years. I appreciate the time Bornstein spent describing historical figures, demonstrating that social entrepreneurship is nothing new; it is simply finally getting the attention it deserves. However, the book falls short of its title. It is not a how-to. Although the resource list is well-balanced, and there are some nuggets of discussion of what it takes to be successful in social entrepreneurship, Bornstein falls short of providing insight for individuals who are wondering whether they have what it takes to be a social entrepreneur. Other than being passionate and obsessive, what else does it take? Do the vignettes provide actionable lessons learned for readers who are considering becoming social entrepreneurs, or who are already in the citizen sector but want to find more success? This reader was left wanting.

Who Will Be The Future Changemakers?

Every person Bornstein discussed has the inspired capacity for solving intricate social problems resourcefully and efficiently, and they are able to maneuver around seemingly insurmountable obstacles to accomplish their goals.

James Grant of Unicef is particularly striking. His story illustrates how the provision of social services on a grand scale will be met with resistance, even if it is an easy one to distribute, is relatively inexpensive and could save thousands of lives. Grant never faltered, and activated his limited resources. As a result, he changed the world. Yet, there is a long road ahead on the mission towards immunizing all children against preventable diseases. Governments, investors, and all concerned citizens want to know the value of enterprises such as Unicef. Bornstein emphasizes in his conclusion that metrics for analyzing social value need to be developed in the civic sector in order to accurately evaluate the organization's ability to create social value. In the public health world, value is created in the number of sick individuals. The statistics that followed Grant's initiatives indicated lowered child mortality and improved qualities of life across the globe, which speak to the value of his work.

Each entrepreneur exemplifies the nature of their work in different ways. Bornstein succeeds in drawing connections between each Ashoka fellow and teases out a skeleton of what an effective social entrepreneur might look like. A new generation could be in the grooming process of inheriting the legacy that these fellows have built from scratch.

Bornstein and How to Change the World

Bornstein's book might not be what people are looking for when they initially pick it up, however, overall it has a diverse plot. The sections are all very different and cover a variety of different people and places. One of my favorite chapters was chapter 10, Are They Possessed, Really Possessed, by an Idea? I liked where the writers bring up a strong point about the term, 'social entrepreneurs.' The term social entrepreneur is new to many people around the world, I remember saying it to my roommates and they looked at me like I was mildly crazy. However, the term is relevant to a lifestyle and purpose of life for many people who live it. The lifestyle explained by Bornstein in this chapter explains the character of the entrepreneur doesn't announce themselves, they work hard to gather important and relevant information for the good of the project, not for the good of themselves. They want this earth to be a better place for the earth, not for themselves. This was a great point and helped me to view the book as extremely helpful. It shares a variety of different stories, and helps to put cultural differences into perspective. I am enjoying this book very much!
