It's a fine poem, as tight as any of Pound's symbolist ...

Kirby Olson was a colleague of mine some years ago when I worked at the same little college in the hamlet of Delhi as he. I have strong suspicions that one of the poems in the collection may reference my fly-fishing (which I did on lunch hours in the upper Delaware river). It's a fine poem, as tight as any of Pound's symbolist efforts--and it is matched, if not beaten, by many of the other equally observant and well crafted verses in the collection.

I haven’t enjoyed a collection of American poetry this much in a long time.

Here is a husband on trash night (“I walk out with garbage / under the stars”), a father showing his children the sap in a milkweed plant:

“Can we eat it?” Tristan asked.
“No,” I said, to be safe.
I imagined 10,000 BC dads
tasting the milkweed before Wikipedia was born.
(“The Gold of Time”)

Organized around the Christian liturgical year, the poems enact a religious dialectic between an experience of the world as godless and one in which God’s light shines through every single thing. This makes the guiding sensibility sometimes resemble surrealism when it’s more often Lutheranism. This also makes the book’s few political touches unpredictable, as in the poem that begins innocently enough

Beauty’s a woman
with a triple nose piercing
in a battered Chevy pick-up.

before arriving at the subject of its title, “Choice.”

Many of the best poems in the collection are set against the landscape of upstate New York, the Catskills country around the town of Delhi. I especially like a moment, though, in which the poet finds in Solzhenitsyn a metaphor for his own “subversive” work:

If I were to write poems
like a train on parallels to Siberia, past
onion domes, aspiring jazz stars
in samizdat basements,
zigzags of proletarian taxis, busy streets,
lunches including inexpensive meats,
smuggled ouzo,
would I write every poem
that is forbidden to exist?

Love these poems!
I would definitely read again around the Christmas season!
Perfect poems to enjoy over a nice cup of hot chocolate on a nice snow day. These book of poems can really get you going because they paint a very vivid imagination!
Especially if you have been to some of the places described in these poems! Forget it! once you've started you can't help but finish.
My favorites are "Pax Americana", "Molotovas and Mazeltovs", and "The Chapel".
I really enjoyed!
Loved it!

Poor Eli Rose can't catch a break. Just when he gets himself out of one jam, the plucky hero of Bob Erlich's 1960s-era crime and espionage novel No Vacancy gets caught up in another scheme. Try as he might, Eli is never the master of his own fate; when he fulfills one demand from the mob, he finds himself drawn into an even worse situation with the CIA. If No Vacancy were only about the misadventures of young Eli Rose in Miami, Cuba, and Costa Rica, it would be a fairly standard spy/crime/action-hero beach read. One character, however, makes it rise out of the sand-and-surf genre: Vicente Amaron.

Mentor, protector, teacher, sidekick, surrogate father figure, and éminence grise to Eli, "Mr. Slick," as Vicente is first introduced, is a charming, funny, noble, solid, and mysterious gem of a character. A key figure in the anti-Castro Cuban exile movement, with ties to both the Miami Jewish mob and the CIA, Vicente is more than just the second banana in this book's dynamic duo. Vicente drives the action, and he does so with style and grace.

Erlich forgoes the cheap fractured Spanglish to which so many authors and script writers resort. The speech patterns are authentic, written in a way that can only happen when an author takes the time to get to know and listen to people of the class and caliber represented by Vicente Amaron.

This is a "guy's" book. As Ian Fleming did with his original James Bond stories, Erlich has his characters act in a solid, believable manner that is appropriate to the time period. He takes care to get the details, tone, setting, and feel of the 1960s without pandering to the cheap seats. The result is a story that feels authentic, with characters that feel real.
No Vacancy starts as a coming-of-age story. It then segues effortlessly into an action novel populated by a "desperate group of individuals playing a desperate game" of espionage, sabotage, greed, revenge, and personal and Cold War politics. There are fist fights, gun battles, jungle skirmishes, and sea-going chases; plenty to keep an action-genre junkie happy. The book is short on female characters, but the three Erlich creates are wonderful. For example: "He couldn't possibly explain it to his friends from other parts of the U.S., who had never experienced the sensory overload of a Latina in full battle dress--a mini skirt short as a bathing suit, tight, low-cut blouse, and long dark hair and eyes to match, a killer combination for the unsuspecting gringo who failed to see the oncoming trap."

That is, however, about as salacious as Erlich gets. In writing about sex, as in writing about violence, Erlich is a master of restraint, demonstrating an old-school sensitivity meant to tease, not pander. The result is a solid, enjoyable, and fun read. Best of all, No Vacancy is the first book in a trilogy, one that is off to a very promising start.

Russell Kirkland is Associate Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at the University of Georgia. He is a member of the executive board of the Society for the Study of Chinese Religions, and of the board of directors of the U.S. Taoist Association. Real Taoism

I have been trying for awhile to find accurate treatments of Taoism from actual scholars (not hacks who know nothing of Chinese history, religion, culture, or language - but have no problem filling the shelves at Barnes and Noble with fatuous fluff). This is an excellent book that not only covers the origins and development of Taoism from the perspective of the "Taoists" themselves (not from the perspective of Westerners who received most of their knowledge from often adversarial Confucians), but it even has an excellent section on "Cultivating the Tao" for those who are interested in putting Taoist traditions into practice.

Great exerpt:

"In the 20th Century West, Taoist practice was deeply misunderstood my narcissistic pseudo-Taoists, who falsely imagined that 'following the Tao' requires no more than 'going with the flow' or 'just being spontaneous.' To the contrary, Taoist practice traditionally rested upon self-discipline as 'the foundation that sets up the basic framework of mind and body in which alone the hard work of the path can be accomplished." (p. 202)

Check the references for other excellent sources on Taoism.

(Please remember that this is an academic source, so don't think you are going to read the "Tao of Poo" and then give the book a bad review when you see the big words. If you want something dumbed down, look elsewhere.)

Criticism of Taoist Scholarship

I bought this book because it had great reviews and it's hard to find good material on the practices and texts of Taoism beyond the level of Tao of Pooh and Taoism for Dummies. But upon reading this torture of a text I found the other reviewers must have had different interests than mine, for what I've found in the book is a state-of-the-union address on Taoist scholarship (mainly how 19th and 20th century translators have not taken into consideration this or that text or aspect of Chinese history) but as to a rigorous explanation of the different practices and beliefs of Taoists there is not much to go on in this book. The author seems more interested in showing off his scholarship of Chinese thought and presenting what Taoism IS NOT than of telling us what those texts he so profusely cites say about what Taoism IS.

Treasure and tool

In modern world only few learners of Taoism are blessed with a real teacher. The rest of us have to get by books, articles and similar sources. Unfortunately we quickly learn that there is a huge, stinky sewage of books by "experts" among which we are to seek for rare pearls.

This book is not only one of such pearls, it also teaches to deal with the sewage, to distinguish real scholarship from New Age "interpretations".

Yes, it is not an easy read because it is written more like research article, but if you are interested in essence of Taoist beliefs and philosophy this book absolutely worth the time you'll spend to read it.

But if you really believe that LeGuin is a Taoist then do not bother with this book.

Reynaldo S. Galang is co-founder of Bakbakan International and is the organization's International Director. Complete Sinawali

Complete Sinawali by Rey Galang describes about two dozen "Sinawali" or double stick drills as done by the Bakbakban group in New Jersey. The sinawali patterns described here are not the usual symmetrical patterns that most beginners are used to, and careful attention should be paid to the footwork, which allows the practitioner to perform the strikes with the proper distancing, timing, speed, and power to make them effective.
Bakbakban offers a videotape series that features some of their double stick patterns and there is usually a seminar once a year based on these as well. I would recommend attending a seminar after I had purchased the book and video in order to fine-tune the body-mechanics that are presented therein. All in all, an excellent book that belongs on the shelf of any Filipino martial artist.

This book is very informative. It gives a good understanding of what stick fighting is and how to train in it. With its simple steps it takes you from a drill to its applications. I highly recomend this book to anyone wanting to learn FMA on their own.

Excellent book on sinawali

This is an excellent book on beginning to advanced sinawali techniques. About two dozen are included, which makes it more diverse and exhaustive than the other books I've seen on kali although this one is on a narrower topic. The only reason for the four stars is that the photos are a little small and hard to follow, but that's common in many other martial arts books as well. It's amazing that practical martial arts books (as opposed to more conceptual or theoretical) are even being published anymore considering how much better videos convey the techniques and movements, and how relatively inexpensive they are, although typically more expensive than the books.

Finally, I would only say that the book should be used in conjunction with the great four-volume video series from guros Ricketts and Galang. It is perhaps my favorite DVD set on the Filipino and Indonesian martial arts and the last DVD on espada y daga was especially well done I thought. If you use the book with the videos you should be in pretty good shape even if you're without a teacher and are using them for "distance learning" as I am. As I am a certified instructor in two other Filipino arts I'm able to use the combination of the two for distance learning pretty well. But even someone less experienced would still benefit from this book and the videos.
