Like getting advice from a wise relative

The Art of Manliness is actually a website that is full of great information. They also have a facebook page and will let you know when new articles are posted. I believe it was last year that 31 Basic Life Skills was posted. The great thing about it, for me as a parent, was that as they posted, it made me think of things that we might need to talk about before our son left for college next year. Now that time is months away, and being able to send this book with him is one more way to show my support to him as he transitions from boy to man. Many of these things may have been taught in the home, when a young man is really out on his own, the details that he may have forgotten may be important. This book is practical, but also gives a sense of the "arm around the shoulder" that may be comforting to a young man trying to make his way in the world for the first time. I cannot overstate how great I think these lessons are, and I wish the Art of Manliness website would publish more of their articles in book form.

Great read but not entirely there.

Being a fan of artofmanliness.com, their books, and just starting out on my own, I found this book to be easy to read and enlightning. It's set out for the 31 days and gives out neat advice, particularly how to gain credit, ways of cooking with little material, and advice on networking, along with simple guides for tying a tie, making a bed, and changing a toilet's "guts". All of this is provided in a neat, blue cover and I'd recommended it to newcomers.

My gripe with it is that, for some of its subjects, the book provides links to artofmanliness.com articles. I don't discredit these articles' accuracy and helpfulness, they are good, but are not guaranteed to hold up years from now. It felt like promotion for the site and a cheap way to shorten pages instead of providing physical content that can be read years from now. Also, more could've been provided for simple subjects; more ways to tie a tie.

It's a small negative in the series, as the first two artofmanliness books were self-contained creations, but still one I would recommend.

Very good book!

I would give this book 4.5 stars if I could. Overall, the book works as a primer on various skills like cooking or fixing a flat tire. My only gripe is the fact that the book sometimes points to URLs that link to the actual Art of Manliness website, where a short elaboration in the book would've sufficed. With that said, I wouldn't mind going on to the AoM website but perhaps not everyone has Internet access.

An emphasis on the visual imagination is more prevalent in the material studied in chapters II and III with a focus on the natural landscape, while the more conceptual and intellectual strand occupies Chapter IV. Every individual chapter begins with a brief introduction to the theoretical ground related to the specific discussion (on gender, space-place, the sublime, and translation, respectively), and a survey of the cultural discourses which situate the material under analysis in the original historical contexts.

About the Author

Xon De Ros, University Lecturer in Modern Spanish Literature, University of Oxford

Xon De Ros studied for her BA at the University of Barcelona and her DPhil in Oxford. From 1999 to 2006 she was Senior Lecturer at King's College London. Since 2006 she has taught Spanish literature at the University of Oxford where she is Tutorial Fellow in Spanish at Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville College. Her areas of research are Spanish Modernism, with a particular interest in the interrelations between poetry and the visual arts. She has also published on women's studies painting and Spanish cinema.

Addressing issues of ethnicity, religion and gender in the early medieval period, Alyssa Gabbay demonstrates the pre-modern precedents for pluralism, conveying the broad sweep of Perso-Islamicate culture and the profound transformations it underwent in medieval South Asia.
