A decent supplement to College Board SAT practice tests

As a long-time SAT and ACT tutor, I'm always excited to find promising new resources for my students. Kallis's "SAT Pattern Strategy", with cover color scheme evoking the classic Kaplan and a big gold sticker on the front claiming it as "Kallis' No. 1 SAT Study Guide" looks like it's been around forever, but is actually a new contender in the SAT prep guide fray of battling books. If you've never heard of Kallis, that's probably because the company got its start in the Asian market with a Chinese language edition in 2016.

The short review: The new text is not perfect by any means, but it has one sterling virtue: It does provide 6 full facsimile SAT exams with answer explanations. This alone makes it a worthwhile purchase. The quality of the questions and their fidelity to College Board SAT style and content is variable, but overall comparable to those created by The Princeton Review or Kaplan.

The nitty gritty:
I only use this textbook with my students as a supplement for those who have completed all 6 of the College Board official practice tests (or are saving some of those for use closer to their exam dates). The book suffers from a number of flaws and inconsistencies. First, the layout and graphic style is extremely distracting, with meaningless dotted lines, shaded text blocks in outlined, shadowed boxes, excessive symbols for tips of different types, useless "ticket"-motif pseudo-tabs on all pages, and more making it hard to read.

More troublesome, in mock test content, there is sometimes a marked divergence from the actual SAT. In English, some grammar questions are too subtle – or simply lack true distinction between the designated correct answer and the second-best answer. In the SAT, this should not happen and the College Board vets their questions extremely carefully to avoid it.

The Reading section does offer very challenging passages, but relies unduly on archaic sources and also presents some poor questions.

Essay questions, too, tend to be non-representative of those on the SAT (using the publisher's hired writers for sometimes wildly informal and unscholarly works rather than noted published speeches and articles) and the book offers no sample scored essays to learn from.

Math is good, though perhaps a little easy overall.

In sum, the Kallis book, though flawed, is a useful supplement to other SAT resources. I have my students work with the College Board book of 4 tests and additional 2 online to print out, official PSAT samples (since they are very close to the SAT in content and difficulty, created by the same test maker), and PWN the SAT for the best Math foundation for this test. When it's time for more practice tests, Kallis is helpful.

Simple EKG book

This is a great book for students trying to learn the ins and outs of reading EKGs. The method Dubin uses is pretty standard to approaching EKG interpretation. This book will not get into complex issues but provides an excellent foundation for reading EKGs. It is a little dated but it is so cheap, it's worth your time.

About the Author
Jaq Hazell has been shortlisted for the Jane Austen Short Story Award and The Virginia Prize for Fiction. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Royal Holloway, University of London. Born near Portsmouth, she studied textile design at Nottingham and her first full-time job was at Buckingham Palace. She has also worked as a humorous greetings cards designer and a journalist. She lives in London.

One of the best stories I’ve read for "Books & Pals,"

I Came To Find A Girl is one of the best stories I’ve read for "Books & Pals," and when you consider I’ve reviewed 100+ and sampled at least six times that many titles, you’ll understand that is a substantial compliment to the author. Finding unique stories like this is what keeps me reading indie works.

The writing was light and crisp with terrific imagery. How’s this for a keen observation in a night club full of “beautiful people?”--“Boys with shaved heads and sharp suits stood in a Reservoir Dogs group while a Jesus lookalike in an artfully torn T-shirt popped something in his mouth.” The prose flowed. The dialogue was clipped and realistic. And the pages kept turning. The author owes me some sleep.

Large portions of the story were shown through the lens of a camera being used to record a documentary film. This unusual technique took a little getting used to, but it proved an effective and efficient way to cover a lot of ground, both physically (because the film was shot in short segments at different locations) and also emotionally, as the person holding the camera, Jack Flood, was a main character, and the movie he was making became a key part of the plot.

The main character, Mia, was a struggling art student heading into her final year and working as a waitress to cover her expenses. She and her friends were so real to me they jumped off the page.

There was an underlying mystery threaded through the book, but it never dominated the plot. Sure, I wanted to know “who done it?” but the journey was satisfying enough that it didn’t need a big reveal. I was disappointed when I turned the last page. Not because the story didn’t feel complete—it did--I just didn’t want it to end.

Highly recommended!

Good technique but difficult for me to get to end

I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers including a lot of British mysteries and thrillers. I found this book ok - I read on a long flight - But it left me cold and I forced myself to get to the end. I liked the way the author presented the story - mainly through a filming of events - but it was odd and at times extremely difficult to follow. I needed to re-read several sections to determine whether the character was watching the film or not. Wish I could have given this book another star.

A sophisticated game of cat and mouse.

I was sent this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Mia, a fine-art student in Nottingham is in her second year of University when she meets Jack Flood – a controversial artist who captures his work and life on his hand-held camera. The night Mia meets Jack changes her life forever in a way she never feels she will get over.

When girls start turning up dead and her close friend Jenny goes missing, Mia is starting to fear for her life in her student house located in the seedy, dangerous area of Nottingham – and with her final year of University fast approaching she needs to focus on her ‘finale’.

Jack Flood keeps appearing in Mia’s life, and when she’s trying to avoid him she wonders if he is in any way linked to these missing and murdered girls. After all, he ruined her life in one night so could his game of cat and mouse be the missing link to her friend Jenny?

Jaq Hazell was shortlisted for The Virginia Prize for Fiction for her incredible work with ‘I Came To Find A Girl’ and after reading it, I can definitely see why!

Hazell has written a magnificent mystery novel that constantly keeps you on your toes and wanting more! Not only has Hazell managed to write a gripping story, the way she has written it is incredibly. It all flows perfectly and gives you just enough to imagine exactly how the story should play-out.

‘I Came To Find A Girl’ really pulls you in to Mia’s student-life in Nottingham and incorporates some really racy topics that haunt us in today’s world. The way Hazell has approached these subjects (such as date rape and murder) is faultless and she really writes about them with the delicacy they require but not so delicate that it doesn’t leave you thinking.

I think this would be an incredibly interesting book to be adapted for the ‘big-screen’. It is so complex and could definitely be turned in to a hit-film if it is kept exactly as the book is.

I am definitely adding Hazell’s other releases and any future novels she may write. If the other novels are as good as this she could be competing for a spot as my favourite author!

Compact Compendium for Condensed Matter

This text, under Springer's line of Graduate Texts in Contemporary Physics, does serve a purpose.
As others have noted, it is terse and advanced. It is slimmer than many other Quantum Field Theory textbooks.
(Note: Banks, Modern Quantum Field Theory,2008, is another text of comparable length !).
Therefore, one must be cognizant of the student for whom this book is addressed. And, who might that be ?
My advice: Peruse the seven appendices. If you are able to follow the reasoning and (especially) the mathematical
derivations, then chances are good that this textbook will be readily assimilated. However, even then, you will be
challenged throughout the text to supply missing derivations. This, not a bad thing, as it reinforces stamina for the
graduate student. In order to appreciate the text, one must (at the very least) be adept at "filling in the details."
First Chapter will be much in the nature of review: Classical and Quantum Mechanics should already be embedded in
your memory. Dirac Deltas and Fourier Series should already be part and parcel of your background. If not, then this
chapter will be your first challenging exercise ! Notice: mention of Casimir energy and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking,
already on Page 10. Onward to Relativistic considerations in Chapter Two:
Recall the use of dimensional analysis and the metric of Special Relativity. Lagrangians and internal symmetry are given
a nice, though brief, exposition. Already, Page 24, we are introduced to phonons and a scalar-field analog of Poynting Vector !
Creation and Annihilation Operators--these are the substance of the first two chapters. Facility in manipulating these entities
must be second-nature. (Obviously, these operators should have been mastered in your Quantum Mechanics Course).
Thus, is completed twenty pages of this book. Fast-paced, but, so far, most of this material should be in the nature of review.
Third Chapter, Perturbation Theory. Now, we enter the realm of heavy computation. If Green's Functions and contour integrals
are foreign to you, then this will be a difficult Chapter. Wick's Theorem nicely expounded. Applications then follow--that is,
Yukawa Potential and Mossbauer Effect. The qualitative discussion which accompanies is to be noted for its profundity.
Feynman Rules are next. Follow along with paper and pencil . As the author says: "....a little playing around will convince you...."
(see Page 42). Some wise words from the author help to make this difficult chapter palatable. As one ascertains, the book's
pace is accelerating (Chapter's One and Two were simpler meal rations, Three and Four are the meat and potatoes).
Fifth Up: Loops, Unitarity and Analyticity. Now, if your complex variable theory is rusty, you will be completely lost.
A tough chapter, ending with a nice section on Dimensional Regularization. ( Memorize the Feynman Integral Identities,
that is, section 5.32. And, if deriving equation 5.45 from 5.44 proves difficult, then you have lost something along the way).
As the reader can see, much ground has been covered in sixty pages ! This is fast paced, indeed. If, however, the text is
being utilized in a course, alongside lectures and assistance--then, it should be assailable. And, so we progress. Next,
considered: Formalities (LSZ sketched), followed by Fermions (This,an exceptional Chapter Seven) as prelude to QED.
We read: "The Ward Identity is a route to establishing gauge invariance." (Page 92). From QED to electrons in solids.
Determinants, Green's Functions, Fourier Transforms, Chapter Nine,thus replete with the full mathematical panoply.
And, it goes without saying, if your mathematics is rusty, all will remain quite foreign . Applications in Chapter Nine
are interesting and insightful (including Debye screening, Plasma Oscillations, Landau Damping)...models and modelling.
Bosons, of course, follow. This includes thoughtful qualitative discussion. But, note, too (Page 131) : "The nonlinear
Schrodinger equation we get by varying the action--that is, varying equation 10.41, is often used as a model...." Again,
if the student is unable to perform said variation of the action, then all that follows will make little sense. So, try it !
Interesting mathematics is met throughout: Matsubara Sums , the incredibly useful identity: In Det A= Tr In A,
Complex Fields, Generating Functionals, Expansions, Gamma Functions, Berezin Integrals (Chapter 14: Path Integrals).
The list can be expanded: Clifford Algebra (Page 72), Automorhism Group (Page 39), Heron's Area Formula (Page 46).
What one quickly ascertains is that you do not get far without "doing the math" which comes along for the Physics ride.
A nice mention of Supersymmetry--alongside Gaussian Integrals (Pages 174-177), makes for fascinating interlude.
Green, Fourier, Cauchy: If your math is not up to par, this text will prove impenetrable. Perhaps, as I have done,the point
needs to be stressed. This is not such a bad text. It requires some work. Examples of such work, left for the student:
(1) Page 57: "Expansion of In(1+x) and perform the sum..."
(2) Page 33: " We see that the energy of interaction is...."
(3) Page 48: "..and do the x-integral..."
(4) Page 87: " the inverse of the matrix is easily found, and we find for the propagator..."
(5) Page 115 : "In Fourier Space, 9.85.9.86 & 9.87 combine to give..."
Prerequisites should be firmly in hand. The book, while brief, has performed a service, and, as set forth in the Preface:
"...many examples in the text are drawn from the field of Condensed Matter physics..." and "....tried to concentrate on the
basic conceptual issues." Part One ( to chapter eleven) emphasizes Operator methods.Part Two (Later): Path Integral Methods.
But, as with any Graduate-level textbook, if your undergraduate physics and mathematics is spotty, or cursory, then much
here will be extremely challenging.( Collateral Study of Chang's 1990 text Introduction to Quantum Field Theory, also with a
two-pronged Operators/Path Integrals approach--but,including Schwinger-- will prove invaluable !).
Thus, recommended for a compact, advanced, presentation of basics--
basics then applied to condensed matter systems.

Sadly, this might be the best book available

This book really isn't very good. If you have a lecturer simultaneously teaching you Quantum Field Theory, it can be useful to refer back to this book for the occasional thing you might have missed. But getting any useful kind of understanding of QFT only from this book is probably impossible.

The main problem with the book is that it leaves out important steps that, if you can fill them in on your own, you already know the subject well enough that you probably don't need the book. This applies to both the mathematical derivations and the text itself.

An example is the chapter on Feynman rules, which in the third paragraph begins discussing how to "determine to which matrix elements of S the diagram corresponds when sandwiched between initial and final states", without first bothering to explain what diagrams are being talked about, or what it even means for a diagram to 'correspond' to a matrix element.

My QFT lecturer has acknowledged that the book is fairly bad, which irate students point out to him every time the course is given, but claims he has not been able to find any better alternative.

Good, all-around instruction manual for several Google products and services

This book should be evaluated on two levels. First, the majority of computer literate users will not need it. All the information presented here is either easily intuited or available in Google's somewhat convoluted help system. In other words, nothing covered here is rocket science.

On the other hand, for those who fear the computer, don't like hunting for sometimes elusive information on sites like Google or just prefer a well organized and comprehensive approach to product training, this book is excellent.

The products and services covered are Google Sites, Chrome browser, Google Apps (including Google Docs (Word Processing, Presentations, Spreadsheets, Calendar, Gmail, Contacts, Video Chat and Talk).

That's a lot of territory - and the authors do a fine job of covering it.

On the whole, the book is a well designed, well written overview, rather than a detailed instruction manual. It is sort of a middling reference manual. But it has to be remembered that none of the Google apps and services are very complex in terms of user interface.

Overall, for those who need a book like this, it is excellent. For those with substantial computer use experience, you're just as well off with the Google help pages.

you won't learn much

About 1/3 of the book is about Sites and 2/3 is about Chrome. Since I hoped to get some guidance about working with Sites, I was disappointed that the little information here about Sites adds almost nothing to what you can access on Google's help page for Sites. Since that Help is inadequate (the reason that I wanted a book about Sites), the book is inadequate as well. Anyone ready to use Sites to construct a web page certainly knows how to use a browser, so there seems little point to putting them together. I think that every penny I paid for this book was wasted.

Incidentally, my experience shows the drawback of on-line book buying, If I had seen this in a bookstore, I would have riffed through the pages and known immediately that the book was useless for me.

The book probably works for someone more learned in the Computer Jargon than I am. It's very thorough and well written, but I need someone to look over my shoulder and verbally help me figure out how to use Google Chrome to its fullest. Fine book for those who can use it.
