It's Not the Garrido Book but Much More about Systematic Failure!

Phil and Nancy Garrido are in prison probably for the rest of their lives. In 2009, Jaycee Dugard was found alive with her two daughters, the product of rape by Phil Garrido, living in a backyard compound in Antioch, California. If Jaycee hadn't finally revealed her real name, she and her girls would still be there living under the radar. Instead, two women at University of California at the Berkeley campus made attempts to search for the truth.

This book is not just about Jaycee's kidnapping. Her book is her story and hers alone. I have read that book as well. This book is written by a true crime veteran writer who has other books to his credit. Unlike Jaycee's book, this book goes into detail regarding Garrido's life into more detail for those who need to know about the case overall.

This book also goes into the Phil's abduction and rape of Katie Callaway in the 1970s for which he served only 11 years of a 50 year sentence. His release into the parole and probation system is complicated by the rules, jurisdictions, and his own manipulation of the system itself.

This author examines why Jaycee was kidnapped in the first place when Garrido was released years before his expected due date unbeknownst to his first victim, Katie Callaway. The author explains in detail about the case and the trial. Sadly justice was not served then and there. If Garrido had remained in Leavenworth, he would have never been able to kidnap Dugard in the first place.

The author reminds us of the several warning signs that went unnoticed by parole and probation officers and neighbors as well. The author also has given attention to false tabloid reports about the case. Robert Scott does a good service in explaining how this all could have happened to Dugard. While this book doesn't detail the abuse that she suffered at the hands of her captors, the book shows how the system had also failed Dugard and her family.

For 18 years, there was speculation about her stepfather Carl Probyn's actions on that June morning and his involvement in a crime against her. He was finally exonerated 18 years later as a murder and kidnapping suspect in his own stepdaughter's case. While their family wasn't whole, there was plenty of collateral damage suffered all over the place in the community as well.

This book shows how the system failed Dugard and Callaway as two victims of Garrido's crimes. The author tries to understand Phil Garrido without being sympathetic. The author sees Garrido for the criminal that he is. He also tries to understand Phil's wife, Nancy, who largely went unnoticed even in her neighborhood or in life. Phil and Nancy avoided a trial by pleading guilty rather than putting Jaycee and her daughters on the stand to testify against them. If they had, they would be traumatized all over again.

The author respects Dugard and Callaway enough to keep the book focused more on the failed system in California. By reading this book and Dugard's book, you will come to understand what had happened from different points of view. I read both and am more educated than ever in this case. If you wanted to know about Garrido's crimes and background, this book is for you. If you want to know more about Jaycee's abduction and life, you read her book too.

Boring Second-hand Info

It's as if the author compiled as many newspaper and magazine clippings as he could, and then made a book out of them. I was interested in learning about Jaycee and her ordeal, and how it could possibly have continued for 18 years with no one knowing, not warmed-over facts and figures about the cretin that kidnapped her. Only in the last few pages was it compelling, and that's because the interview was in Jaycee's own words (and the interview was not even with the author).

Boring and disappointing.

This book has very little to do with Jaycee Lee Dugard. It is really the story of Phillip Craig Garrido's life. It is a shame that the author didn't title this correctly and that he actually put a photo of Jaycee on the cover of his book, shame on you.

It still works!

As an experiment, I decided to use this book for two weeks with the suggested music. To my amazement, it really works! I'm just 20 and so it is a huge novelty not to follow a tv screen.
In the book, Jane doesn't just address aerobics, but where society places people in life, the enviroment and healthy eating.
I now have this workout on DVD so really use the book as reference to healthy living.
You would have thought that it would be hard to follow a book to workout with. But it isn't. For every move there are professionally taken indepth photographs with descriptions.
You really use this book until you remember the moves off by heart. But it's use doesn't stop there as it is jam packed with so much information.
And the funny thing is it feels better working out in the absense of a television screen.

GREAT FITNESS BOOK FOR BODY AND LIFE

I purchased this book based on three things. One I wanted to see an example of Jane Fonda's original 1982 workout(hard to find/expensive). Two I love almost all of JF workouts. Three the one review I read confirmed I needed this for my collection. This is truly a wonderful book I can see why it was a best seller. This book offers information on a wide range of subjects from self-esteem, diet, social and enviromental issues, not to mention the two workouts. This was a great buy.

This book offers a begginer and advanced workout. Each workout begins with warm-up and ends with a cool down. At the begging of each exercise routine there is a list of music that could accompany the exercise. This can be used as a guide to choosing your own music. Both routines have an aerobics, arms, waist, abs, hips and thighs, bottocks. The workouts last about 30-45 for beginner and 40-60 mins for advanced. The cardio portion of both workouts are simple but short, however you can easily extend it.

This workout is great for the flexibility it offers. This is a workout that you can truly make your own. You could even do it while you are watching television. One of the things I really liked was making my own music to this workout. Being abel to chose your own music that you enjoy, really keeps you going. This is great if you like to make compilation tapes or cds.

Now I know what your thinking I don't go for exercise books. And for the most part I would agree, with all the page turning reading descriptions and the pictures that make no sense. But this is written and shown in a very clear manner. Over time this should just be a guide. Because you should start to memorize the workout.

This is a great workout if your short on time or you don't feel like going to the gym of even putting a exercise tape in the vcr. This workout out is total body toning. You could even use light hand weights during some of the arm movements for extra work. However some of the movements can be jarring and hard on the joints. Just modify it to fit your own personal needs. If it feels wrong don't do it. If you like this workout I would recommend Jane Fonda's New Workout Book or VHS and Jane Fonda's Women Coming of Age and Jane Fonda's Easy Going Workout.

Still a great book

I bought this book in the 80's after the birth of my son. Within 4 months, I had lost 20 lbs & was toned & trim. A few years ago, I made the stupid error of getting rid of it. I repurchased it again because the excercises remain effective and it is a killer workout. Old school for me is the way to go!

In a chapter entitled "Science and Hope," Sagan (Pale Blue Dot, Random, 1994) writes: "This book is a personal statement, reflecting my lifelong love affair with science." Accordingly, he deplores pseudoscientific thinking and the credulous beliefs that emerge from it. Today, when science is critical for solving the world's problems, many people, instead, trust astrology and New Age spiritualism. Likewise, surveys reveal that a majority of Americans believe that Earth is regularly visited by space aliens. Using basic tools of science?empiricism, rationalism, and experimentation?Sagan debunks these and other common fallacies of pseudoscience. In doing so, he speculates as to how such beliefs arise. Some of his explanations are not entirely convincing (are alien-abduction tales really modern versions of medieval myths?), but he handles them with empathy so as to not demean the intelligence of true believers. The best chapters examine the state of science education and technical literacy in America and suggest an agenda for improving both. The book is overlong, occasionally redundant, and parts have been published elsewhere. Still, Sagan's theme is important, and his popularity might lure some readers from the UFO and occult books cluttering so many library and bookstore shelves. For public and undergraduate libraries.

An Uplifting Discussion of the Power of Wonder and Skepticism

I've had this book in the basement for 20 years and I finally got around to reading it. I'm glad I did. Despite being a tad dated now, Sagan's thesis that it's the dual modes of thinking - wonder of the real world and skepticism of authority and baseless assertions - that most benefit societies. His clarion call for a people with mature critical thinking skills needs to be heard more than ever. He is clear that belief without evidence is anathema to a free, 21st century society world.

Because it was written more than 20 years ago, the book has lost some of the power it had in the mid-90s. Sagan never mentions the internet or social networks. The rise of Islamic terrorism is still a thing of the future. Though apposite in the mid-90s, some of his examples are less relevant today. This is the only reason I can't give this book 5-stars.

He avoids name-calling and strident rhetoric. He focuses more on pseudo-science rather than religion. The book is largely apolitical but the concluding two chapters are, he acknowledges, intentionally more political than the rest of the book. And these last two chapters are just as pertinent today as they were 20 years ago. (In fact, they have a prescient quality to them.) I highly recommend you read them.

Sagan would be 82 were he still alive. It's a pity he's not around to provide commentary. Recommended.

One of the greatest tutorials on logic and reason ever written.

I could write an absolutely huge review for this, but I must keep it brief.

If you are open-minded enough to wonder if your beliefs in ghosts, spirits, aliens, crop circle as alien artifacts, bigfoot, etc. are well-founded, this book will help you figure out the right questions to ask... and that is often the barrier that many people face when trying to vet these ideas with logic.

Remember... the closed-minded are those that will believe something no matter what evidence comes to refute their beliefs. Scientists are the most open-minded people in the world. They don't believe... they test, they ask for confirming evidence, and the good ones admit when their ideas are wrong or need to be modified in some way.

Carl Sagan is one of the mighty pillars of reason and logic of our age... this book will start you on your way to become one of those who can keep our society from falling in to another dark age of silly beliefs in mysticism, spiritualism, bogus (alternative) medicine, satanic ritual abuse, energy/faith healing, and other such pitfalls of magical thinking.

Give it a try... and remember, be open-minded!

An Essential Read in a World Beset by Religious Fundamentalism

In 1996, Carl Sagan published The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, a book that was at the time heralded as “Wonder-saturated” (The Washington Post) and “a manifesto for clear thought” (Los Angeles Times). Here Carl Sagan argued that “Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking.” The Religious Right,realize this, and they see it as a way of thinking inimical to their dogmatic assertions, assertions drawn on a Bronze Age religion codified in a document put to paper in the first millennium B.C.E.

Ironically enough, as Sagan points out, “A Candle in the Dark“ was a Biblically-based book published in London in 1656 on the cusp of the Enlightenment, a book whose author, Thomas Ady, attacked the witch hunts of his time “as a scam ‘to delude the people’.” The arguments he raised will be familiar to us today: “Any illness or storm, anything out of the ordinary, was popularly attributed to witchcraft.”

Thomas Ady saw the absurdity of this reasoning 350 years ago. He saw that it was time to move past such primitive and superstitious thinking. I wonder what he would say today, hearing these arguments still uttered.

Sagan wrote,

“For much of our history, we were so fearful of the outside world, with its unpredictable dangers, that we gladly embraced anything that promised to soften or explain away the terror. Science is an attempt, largely successful, to understand the world, to get a grip on things, to get hold of ourselves, to steer a safe course. Microbiology and meteorology now explain what only a few centuries ago was considered sufficient cause to burn women to death.”

Mac OS snow leopard all in one for dummies

I had updated to snow leopard a few years ago. I had the earlier versionMac os X leopard for dummies. I wanted to see the differences. I also wanted my wife to quit using our PC and start using my Mac.
It was worth the cost of my curiosity. I cannot upgrade my Mac any further. So I have everything I need. We both share the Mac and it has been great for her. So another conversion was made for Apple. Our PC is not on line. This was due to the IE scare. So my wife finally conceded to use it and found it was better.

it's okay ,but you can't use for reference

you can't use it for reference because he tells you a little about something ,when say I'll tell you more about in a different chapter .I didn't like that because I want to read about how to do certain things ,not the whole book.It is very easy to understand for people who aren't really good on computers ,like me.Also I got the kindle book and there's no index on the kindle book,so it's hard to look up the stuff .

Since I am new to Snow Leopard, iLife 9 and iWork, I decided on the 8-in-1 manual rather than 3 separate manuals. Because of this, I have lost depth in each topic. When I want more detail, I go to [...] or the Help menus on the computer. I would still recommend this book because it gives a broad overview of many topics.

About the Author

Duncan Richards trained in clinical pharmacology at Oxford where he developed a strong interest in translational pharmacology. Since completing his training, Duncan has worked in drug discovery for GSK. His current role is as Clinical Director of the Academic Discovery Performance Unit. This group aims to bring together the drug development expertise of GSK with the specialist knowledge of academic investigators to develop a portfolio of novel drug molecules.

Jeff Aronson is Reader in Clinical Pharmacology, University of Oxford, and Honorary Consultant Physician to the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust. He does acute medical takes and teaches clinical students general medicine and practical drug therapy and prescribing. His research interests span all aspects of clinical pharmacology, especially adverse drug reactions and monitoring therapeutic interventions. He is President of the British Pharmacological Society, a member of the Formulary Committees of the British National Formulary and the British National Formulary for Children, a member of the Technology Appraisal Committee of NICE, Chairman of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission's Expert Advisory Group on Nomenclature, and Editor-in-Chief of Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs-The International Encyclopedia of Adverse Drug Reactions and Interactions (15th edition, 2006) and of its annual update volumes (Side Effects of Drugs Annuals). Dr. Jamie Coleman received his MBChB from the University of Birmingham in 1999. He trained in the West Midlands as a Clinical Pharmacologist undertaking an MD on the subject of adverse drug reactions which he completed in 2008. During his training he also developed an interest in medical teaching and gained an MA Medical Education in 2008. He took up a Consultant Clinical Pharmacologist job in early 2009 at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and is an honorary senior lecturer in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. He continues to be involved in the teaching of therapeutics and prescribing to a wide variety of healthcare professionals at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

About the Author

JAY ASHER's debut novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, a #1 New York Times and international bestseller, has sold over 3 million copies in the United States alone and is now a thirteen-part series on Netflix. The Future of Us, his second novel, was co-authored with Printz Honor winner Carolyn Mackler. He is also the author of the New York Times bestselling What Light. Decided to read this after the Netflix. I really learned a lot from this book, it give me a new perspective on how I view this world differently. Life changing book!! Absolutely love it!!!!!!

Simply Amazing.

The first time I heard about this book was when Selena Gomez tweeted that her new Netflix series was about to come out, I immediately watched the series and fell in love with the plot, and the characters. I finished the book in one day, this book really wants you to keep going. I recommend this to everyone.
