Professional Rivalry gone wild!

If you are expecting to learn about digs and dinosaurs, you may be surprised by this book. Although this is a good history of American digs and findings, the author focuses more on the paleontologists and explorers than on the prehistoric things they found.

If you thrive on stories about business psychology, office politics, and cranky Victorian-era paleontologists, this may be your cup of tea. The search for fossils and dinosaur bones led Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh west to dig the prehistoric bone beds of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Their contributions to science and the field of paleontology were massive, and laid the groundwork for modern studies and superb museum and academic collections.

This is not an adventure story. It is the story of the network of Gilded-Age paleontologists, with an emphasis on the rivalry between Cope (of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia) and Marsh (of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale).

The book may inspire you to look for the the serious-minded A&E documentary, "Dinosaur Wars," on the same topic.

"Bone Hunters" a very thorough and readable book. I will incorporate some of this material into my Westward Expansion/Gilded Age lesson plans for HIS 112. What could be better than throwing dinosaurs into the mix?!

As has been pointed out, this book is not so much about now-extinct mammals and dinosaurs in the American West as about the men of the 19th century, especially rivals O.C. Marsh and Edward D Cope, who discovered and classified them. However, it should be noted that the book was written in 1973. Which accounts in part for its low resolution B&W photos. More importantly, it reflects the thinking toward dinosaurs prior to the so-called "dinosaur renaissance" that has taken place in the last four decades.

Without a doubt one of the most postive and character impacting books for anyone seeking a position of leadership or already in one. No doubt it has raised the bar on what it takes to be a leader that walks with integrity. This book should be REQUIRED reading in every seminary, Bible College and church leadership team. The practical advice for every day leading (with real upto date examples of leadership failures/successes) accompanied by the word of God make this a must read and study book. I highly recommend this book. Buy it for your pastor, for your whole leadership team, and for yourself. You won't regret the investment.

This book is an excellent source for any discipleship class or individual study on the causes of failure in Christian leadership/service, and how to avoid them. It is applicable to both the ordained professional and the servant in the pew. The proactive steps of patient preparation, self-examination, submission and accountability will help any future leader to prepare not only their own walk, but also how to reach a hand back to those who are following in their footsteps. Smart people learn from their own mistakes, wise ones learn from the error of others. A must read for multiple staffs!

Barry Bergdoll is Professor of Art History at Columbia University in New York. How it all started - A Terrific Introduction to 19th century and Modern Architecture

A clear yet sophisticated introduction. Most undergraduate architectural surveys are organized around either time periods or themes. Chronological approaches tend to be linear and concentrate on form, thematic approaches on overlapping phenomena and the history of ideas. Professor Bergdoll's book ably does both. It combines a complex yet lucid historical narrative with excursions into the history of ideas, developing social and political forces, and the development of new aesthetic and formal problems. Greatest hits include Somerset House, The Crystal Palace, French and English train stations, The Red House, German Romantic Monuments and Rundbogenstil buildings, The Eiffel Tower. The range of topics and the depth of treatment makes this a valuable undergraduate text and though challenging a good text for the architect and fans of architecture.

this book must be read with Modern Architecture by Oxford in order to understand the history of architecture. This book covers the must needed areas of the field including, the hut to Palladio, and others up until the rise of modernism, where incidently the book Modern Architecture takes over. I recommend this book in concordance to that book and for the architecture student whether for class or not.

Can a survey book be any better than this one?

This superb book provides a great overview of the period it covers. It provides a springboard into a vast subject area. Like a well done modern textbook, it has wonderful images of the buildings, lots of margin space for notes, fine paper and durable high quality binding, an excellent index with over 1500 items, an index of all images with source and dates, a very useful bibliography that also makes recommendations for further reading on specific topics covered, a glossary of special terms not easily found online, and a comprehensive graphic timeline. The Oxford series has done a masterful job in all ways, coupled with eye-pleasing graphics. Each page also has (in addition to a page number) a label, identifying the chapter topic on the left and page subject on the right. A model of perfection for all physical books on art and architecture.

Most importantly, the intelligent writing is clear, well organized, and concise yet deep. Every paragraph has insights, and invites the interested reader to delve into the topic in greater depth. The author provides the essential facts of places, dates, and persons but his real contribution is the presentation of the linkage between human ideas and architectural form. Architecture comes alive as an expression of competing ideals and aspirations at the forefront of social changes.

So, with thought-invoking and insightful writing, and a perfect physical book, what else does a demanding architecture history student or enthusiast get? How about an online Amazon "Look Inside" feature that allows you to easily search for any word used in the book, to find each page it is used on, with the sentence it is located in. This is one marriage of books and technology that makes the grade.

But perfection is never enough. I now crave large Ultra HD images I could display on my big screen TV screen to accompany the reading of the book. I know that too will eventually come.

incredible, watershed book

I found this at a somewhat low point in my life, but I read this book expecting great things and I wasn't dissappointed. I only wish it was more available. This book, which details the real-life main character, a semi-famous model/actress' search for that one perfect love is a parallel to the universal search for acceptance and meaning. The story of her incredibly painful life kept me turning each page, reluctant to quit. This woman finally found that perfect love in God, and I must admit it helped me look at God in a new light. When I read what she said He did in her life, I was certain that He could do it in mine- and incredible things have happened since! I also loved her "let's keep it real" honest approach to Christianity. For these reasons, this book was a watershed for me. I think it's great for anyone who likes dramatic true stories. If you don't buy it, at least give it a go at your local library.

A real life-changer

A friend recommended this book, when I was a young adult seeking answers in the early 80's. It was my life story, with times and places changed. It described erroneous ways of thinking that had been destructive; it powerfully took me to a deeper understanding of God's grace for my past and His purpose for my future. Now a pastor's wife working with young single adults, I regularly track down copies to give to those who desperately seek, but are clueless how to find, someone to love them.

The true story will keep you on edge all the way through the book. The model-actress sufferd much but gained her purpose in life.

A powerful memoir of nuclear crisis

Robert Kennedy wrote "Thirteen Days" a short time before his death in 1968. He never had the chance to rewrite and add additional material to his book; but as written it is a riveting account of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. In the Autumn of 1962 the Soviet Union was placing nuclear missiles in Cuba. President Kennedy had to respond to that imminent threat, and the question was what course to take about the dangerous situation in Cuba. There were many that favored an immediate overwhelming military response to destroy the missiles; but Robert Kennedy favored surrounding the island with a naval blockade instead. He believed that a military attack on Cuba could lead to nuclear war, and that it should only be undertaken if there was no other choice. President Kennedy and his advisors spent many agonizing hours trying to consider every possible miscalculation or false step that could result in catastrophe. They sought to learn from the history of the past, and tried to follow a path of understanding in dealing with the Soviet Union and Cuba. The decisions that were made about Cuba would affect the lives of everyone on earth, and the lives of future generations as yet unborn. In this book the momentous events of the crisis in 1962 are seen through the eyes of Robert Kennedy. He opens the door to that time as only one who was there could, and gives many valuable insights into the mind of his brother the President. He helps us to understand what really happened in October 1962; and why. This is a very fine book, containing lessons of history that should always be remembered during times of great crisis.

A Historical Lesson about Human Nature and our own Mortality

"Thirteen Days", a memoir by Robert Kennedy has become one of the most insightful and behind-the-scenes accounts of one of the most studied military confrontations in history. It was a time in which the world looked nuclear annihilation directly in the eyes over the course of 13 dramatic days in October of 1962.
RFK, an intricate player throughout the process, lays out in chilling recollection the Cuban Missile Crisis and how close we actually came to that fateful day when the world's superpowers would square off with nuclear weapons. RFK's first-hand account articulately provides a perspective on what was going on in the minds of the players involved. It allows the reader to understand the enormous weight their decisions carried, as well as all of the pressures that affected each of them.
While a generation remembers a stoic President Kennedy giving his on-air address condemning the soviet supply of offensive weapons into Cuba, "13 Days" brings into account all of the human factors that affected these men as they sought to do what they felt was right.
This was a time in our nation's history when leadership was most needed. With the encouragement of the President, these individuals sought to learn from the mistakes of the past while also sympathizing with the Soviets who were also thrust into this position. The Soviets would not let a military attack go unwarranted, but at the same time had families of their own and ultimately wanted the same outcome from this standoff; a peaceful conclusion.
The decisions that were made by the ExComm would impact the history of the world and all of its inhabitants. It was a trying time that tested the souls of the leaders of the world and proved to be a turning point in world events. As JFK security advisor McGeorge Bundy aptly put it, "Having come so close to the edge, we must make it our business not to pass this way again." President Kennedy did his best to put it all in perspective; "For in the final analysis, our most basic link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."
"13 Days" lays out the sequence of events that brought us all to this realization. It is a historical account that also touches upon the fragility of human nature and teaches us all a valuable lesson about our own mortality.

It is only because of great and humble men we are here today

While I was not yet born when RFK and JFK were alive, I would have to say they are two of the greatest men in American history. Robert Kennedy brings his readers closer to a situtation that is almost beyond the scope of the human mind. His account of the Cuban Missile Crisis makes us realize how close we have come to the end and absolutely shows us that it is only because of great men we are here. This book reminds us how close we came to the end and the critical role Jack and Bobby played in bringing us back. I only hope that current and future leaders of the world read this account and understand what they understood...we are all mortal and we all love our children. Those are the things that will save us, Jack and Bobby knew that and it is obvious in this extrodrinary book.

Taking a page from the classic Little Women, Brooks considers the possible fate of Mr. March, the father from Louisa May Alcott's novel, gone to the Civil War while his dutiful family waits behind. In difficult financial straights since an injudicious investment, March's family has adapted to their reduced fortunes, valuing the fruits of the mind over material possessions, all convinced "that the greater part of a man's duty consists in abstaining from much that he is in the habit of consuming."

A learned man who has traveled the country in his youth, Mr. March is later content to raise his four daughters in a pastoral landscape in Concord, Connecticut, with esteemed neighbors and fellow philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. For her part, Mrs. Marsh (Marmee) is an abolitionist in spirit and action, while many northerners are still mired in discussions about the morality of slavery. A long-time member of the Underground Railroad, Marmee is fondest of her husband's nature when he supports her anti-slavery convictions with equal fervor.

Although older than most Union soldiers, Marsh joins the war effort as a chaplain. Broad-minded to a fault, March extends comfort to the injured and dying, torn by the violence around him and the extreme youth of soldiers on both sides. While Marsh believes the war is motivated by the noble effort to free the slaves, he is not oblivious to other realities involved and many of the Union soldiers are there by conscription.

The dialog is perfect, relative to the era and prone to prodigious verbiage. Nor is March suffering from a lack of moral persuasion, so conscience-riddled as to be a bit of a bore, rich in character if not in goods. However, excessive wordiness is also the flaw in this novel, an exercise in moral demagoguery that is appropriate to the age, but often tedious and lacking in passion. One wants March (and his beloved Marmee for that matter) to be a bit more human. For every flawed decision March agonizes over, he suffers equal self-flagellation. Even after a nearly mortal illness, March perseveres, pulling himself together lest his family be sullied by his faults.

On the positive side, the naive beliefs of the abolitionists are examined, revealing the barbarism and sadism that exist in any war. There is profit to be made, exploitation of the unfortunate and greed in excess, regardless of noble intent. Prejudice is not constrained by geography, righteousness a flagrant cloak, frequently hiding the truth of war.

Most of the novel is in first-person perspective, but final chapters are from other viewpoints, Mrs. March and the ex-slave, Grace Clement, where the novel finally comes to life. If only the entire book offered this occasional change of perspective. Instead, March carries the burden of the plot; unfortunately, it is the reader's burden as well. Brooks is an excellent writer, with the potential to enliven historical perspective. In future novels, I hope the author's characters are allowed to breathe humanity into the facts that cost the blood of thousands. Luan Gaines/ 2005.

"How Brave is Brave Enough"

I've dubbed this book the adult sequel to Alcott's "Little Women" and encouraged those in my study group to re-read Alcott's book before reading "March." "March" is an extremely thought provoking story of the pains of war and the agony of being separated from family. There is running through this novel, the question of how one deals with one's personal concept of courage and responsibility to loved ones and strangers. Geraldine Brooks paints pictures of her characters in the readers minds that make them seem very real. Her use of actual historical people and events make one forget that this is actually a fictional piece. An excellent book and one that stimulated much discussion in my study group in several categories; the slavery issue, the horrors of war, family separation, Rev. March's faith and Christian beliefs, and personal courage today.

Don't read this book if you love Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women' and 'Little Men', it will ruin the characters for you. I bought this because I love those books and had read a few of Geraldine Brooks' other novels. Did not like this one! In her defense though, I didn't read the whole thing. The way she was ruining perfectly good characters upset me so I don't think I even got halfway through it.

About the Author

Christian Constanda, MS, PhD, DSc, is the Charles W. Oliphant Endowed Chair in Mathematical Sciences and director of the Center for Boundary Integral Methods at the University of Tulsa. He is also an emeritus professor at the University of Strathclyde and chairman of the International Consortium on Integral Methods in Science and Engineering. He is the author/editor of more than 28 books and more than 130 journal papers. His research interests include boundary value problems for elastic plates with transverse shear deformation, direct and indirect integral equation methods for elliptic problems and time-dependent problems, and variational methods in elasticity.

Bursting with Creative Projects and Gorgeous Pictures!

This is, quite simply put, a gorgeous book. But it is also practical! When I think of a living wall garden, I have always thought about some enormous installation that would take lots of time, effort, and cash to maintain. Shawna has presented a variety of projects that any gardener can do, large scale and small, with varied plant palettes, suited for different kinds of growing conditions. I love the projects that are as much art as they are gardening, and they seem like they'd be easy to do. Really inspirational!

As with any DIY book, step by step instructions and photographs that paint a clear picture are important, and this book delivers.

I recommend this to anyone who is interesting in doing something a little different in the garden. Whether you want a vertical cocktail garden or a living sculpture to adorn your fence, you'll find inspiration here. Congratulations on a book well done!

Everything you ever need to know about a living wall

This book should be renamed "Everything you ever need to know about a living wall" ... it's fabulous and complete. The author discusses containers, soil, watering, sun exposure, and even pest control (in a natural, Eco-friendly way). Her wall ideas are lovely and include everything from pallet planters to mason jar walls to containers which come ready to hang on a wall, fence, or door. There are ideas for free-standing walls (no actual wall required) and she even mentions systems which are self-watering.

There are quite a few design suggestions along with detailed instructions & photos (a DIY dream). One can use seeds (an economical option) or sprouted plants. Plant combination ideas range from a Culinary Kitchen Garden, which includes organic veggies and herbs, to an Aphrodisiac Garden, which includes plants to enhance sexual energy.

Once you're wall is growing, there's advice on maintenance throughout the year including things like what to do in the autumn and how to use worm castings and/or compost in your living wall.

This book is appropriate for anyone who enjoys beautiful, living walls and low-effort gardening.

Visually stunning and chock full of ideas

Not just a how-to, but a why-to. Why grow a vertical garden? To help pollinators, to make the best of small spaces, to grow veggies for yourself and others, to insulate your walls, to purify the air. You name it, Shawna's got you covered--whether you're interested in herbs, aromatherapy, a cocktail garden, or even an aphrodisiac garden. Pretty cool stuff! She gives you plenty of ideas and practical tips. Easy to read, straightforward guidance, pleasing layout. What's not to like?
