How to Destabilize the International Economy without even trying

When one reads this book, it is like dropping into the hole of Alice in Wonderland, or falling into one of Carlos Castenada's peyote trances never to come out again. One arrives unprepared at a station in a new dimension of human existence. It is an odyssey "across," "within," "through" and ""around" the world of where drugs, and the drug Kingpins that traffic them, meet with our non-existent "shadow government."

Both are overlapping "nether worlds" that we are told do not exist, but exist they do: as partners in crimes at some place well above our heads. Not only do they exist, but if one can believe the expanded paradigm of the U.S. government put forth by Berkeley Professor, Peter Dale Scott, the drug cartels and those agents and agencies of government that intersect with them -- which promote or passively allow them to ply their trade -- make up the "Sixth Estate" of our government (with the "Press", the mob and other organized crime cartels being the Fourth and the Fifth).

This book is a tale of such staggering proportions that were the facts not all in perfect alignment with the reality we see in the ghettoes where the drug trade is mostly plied, one would believe it to have been invented: made from whole cloth like a fairy tale. However, once the motive of money, unimaginable amounts of money, enters the picture, then our senses begin to tell us that this is not fiction, no fairy tale at all: but the outer limits of what can happen when greed and the pursuit of money are let loose, unbridled, unrestrained to seek its own logical path and endpoint.

As but two examples, during the 1970s, before the "real" drugs crisis with "crack cocaine" ever got off the ground, there was so much money in marijuana trafficking that the drug kingpins bought, all along the Atlantic coast, from New Jersey to Miami, all of the available multi-million dollar beachfront mansions they could find. The purpose of this vast investment: To use them as storage houses for transshipments of the vast amounts of marijuana: A whole class of U.S. property was used only as storage sheds for marijuana.

As another example, in order to support their defensive needs, the drug Kingpins, would "let" contracts for the development of new equipment needed to support their smuggling efforts. Things like new guns, radar equipment, night goggles, submarines, excavation equipment, poisons, etc. were procured through private contractors just as the military does with new weapon systems.

And as always, their biggest problem was never finding buyers for their product, but how to transport and launder staggering amounts of money, which with the advent of cocaine, weighed more than the drugs that were sold, and was much more difficult to conceal and dispose of. The sophistication with which large sums of money was laundered and otherwise invested in the normal economy, even in the days when this book was written, still are enough to amaze the best Phds in economics: setting up and "breaking out" bonding houses, issues stocks, setting up shell companies, etc., ad infinitum. During the 1980s, for instance, 85% of all Miami paper money tested positive for trances of cocaine.

Given that the amount of money involved is enough to destabilized even the largest governments in the world, it is easy to see why governments were able to rationalized being and staying involved in the drug trade: better to regulate and give order to it than to allow random criminals to destabilize the entire world.

This book tells the complete story of how a handful of drug cartels and renegade drug entrepreneurs, did almost that.

Captivating and revealing look at the US war on drugs.

This book was recommended to me by a DEA agent. When I opened the cover, I stepped into another world, and when I emerged, I could no longer take seriously such presidential pronouncements to "Just Say No" or "read my lips." Later, I encountered a "friend" who had been in jail with one of the major individuals featured in the book. He told me that the convicted drug dealer had discussed the book and proclaimed that his part of the story had been reported accurately, except for the amount of money he'd been caught with. Evidently, DEA agents turned in $1M of drug money found in his trunk. He said there was at least $3M. Such corruption, I discovered upon reading the book, was more the rule rather than the exception. The book moved me to write my congressman, who admitted he had never even heard of the secret drug enforcement organization detailed in the book. And when Reagan and Ollie North were getting roasted about "guns for hostages," I laughed. If the American people knew about the drug deals our government oversaw (and I'm sure continues to oversee) to prop up "U.S. causes" in other countries, as well as our own, they also would have found the affair amusing. This book opened my eyes and blasted my naivete regarding our government's involvement in the dark underworld of illegal drugs. It will do the same for you. James Mills has written a remarkable book, and he had sense enough not to overwrite and allow this astounding story to speak for itself.

Redemption

Found this book to be so very timely, relevant and a true 'refresher' which was needed for me.
Working in Hospice care, I needed a tune-up and this book gave it to me.
Yancey puts it in everyday terms, not high-theology or academia, but rather an easy read with wonderful examples.
Great reflection on current events. Loved the portion about redemption.
Highly recommend this book. Bought it for Kindle on IPad

An honest answer to a unanswerable question.

June Giulia Frazier Eberle I finished this book just now. Tears rolled down my face as I read the book I am thankful Yancey honestly presents his thoughts on such a painful topic. So many Christians hide or try to cover over the why of suffering. We become fake hollow beings when we try and overlook the pain around us. I can not add my thoughts right now on this recent book as I must think on what Yancey so eloquently put into words. I have read all of his books; but somehow over looked Prayer-does it make any difference. I recently came upon it and I am reading it now for a second time. It has changed the way I think about God and prayer. I am overwhelmed by the power of Yancey's insights into God. Thank you Philip Yancey for sharing your thoughts. You have led me to new places and blessed my life. ( my family and I were missionaries for 18 years) I have known suffering and I also know great joy. I yearn to know the infinite God more. I always get a little closer to God after reading Yancey's books.

Help and hope, just when we all need it

As always, Phillip Yancey has composed the words that keep me moving forward. I was so incredibly blessed by his book, The Gift of Pain, as I struggled with my own life challenges. I'm an amputee, and so much of what he said in The Gift of Pain was familiar to me. Now, with his new book, I can see how it all comes around. When I was researching before my amputation, and was so blessed by so many who had gone before me, and could offer me encouragement to me,I understood very deeply how giving back, now that I'm on the other side, helps the ones coming behind me. It's why I wrote "Just One Foot: How Amputation Cured My Disability". Because I so clearly saw how we are all just here to help each other.
Phillip Yancey is the master of this message. I'm so thrilled he wrote this new book, "The Question That Never Goes Away". There are so many who need it and so many who will be blessed by it. I wish I could give it a million stars on the rating system.

The Beginning of Inspector Banks

I read the other books in Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series and was glad to be able to read the first 3 books - Gallow's View, A Dedicated Man and A Necessary End. These books give the background of Inspector Banks' relationships with his wife Sandra and Sergeant Hatchley. Peter Robinson's writing is detailed without being boring and seamless going from one scene to the next. Inspector Banks solves his cases by looking at all the evidence, not just the convenient pieces of evidence.
One inconsistency I did note was that Banks' father had to retire because of angina early in the series but later on in the series he was made redundant due to Thatcher policies.
On the whole, this book was well worth reading.

I'm a huge fan of Inspector Banks and having his first three "episodes" contained in one book was a nice feature except the book was much heavier than my Kindle, but hey, you can't have everything.

First started in the middle of the series, In A Dry Season and Playing with Fire. This heavy paperback caught me up on his early Eastvale days, his marriage and so on. Great 3 novels in 1 bargain, enjoying the series, always surprising mysteries, great ambiance descriptions of the dales, its towns and pubs and people.

Pretty good resource for exercises

Conditioning for Combat Sports is are pretty good book. It goes into great detail about the many different types and ways to do exercises ranging from partner mat drills to weightlifting to agility drills. It does a great job of emphasizing what kind of training is appropriate for a combat athlete. The problem comes from its layout and the feel of "missing" information. The layout problem is simply that there is no index with the exercises in alphabetical order. There is a table of contents with exercises categorized by type and placement in the book, but no index. The second problem is that the book talks about how to develop strength and how to develop endurance, but treats these two separately. It gives good workout routines for both, but never how to work them together. The book tells you that it is important to have both of these, but doesn't give an example workout week of how to do general physical preparation.

I liked the book, it gave me a lot of great information, but I feel like I have to go elsewhere to figure out what to do with this information. Also, on an unrelated note, it is kind of weird how the photo on the front of this book is the same photo on the "300 workout" book. Who is that guy and where is the book that he wrote?

Great Workout Book

Follow along with this training and you WILL improve your health. GPP (general physical preparedness) is the base strength at which you can perform a task. So by increasing you GPP you improve you ability to other things like jiu jitsu, boxing, mma or even things like hike, bike or swim. GPP is why an MMA fighter can go through a training camp and come out much more inshape. Example St. Pierre trains all the time so his GPP is high but some fighters dont train in between fights like Quinton Jackson and those fighters struggle to make it 3 rounds. Following this book will help strengthen all areas of your body and burn fat/build muscle. I highly recomend this book. The only problem I have is that it has things like tire flips. Most people will not have a tire to flip or an area to do so. I just supplimented that exercise with a homemade sandbag exercise. But all in all this book is great for fitness and training.

Extremely informative

Anyone interested in conditioning should take a look at this book. It is filled with great examples and information you can use to improve your current conditioning regimen, create a new one, or take it to the next level. Rather than just advocate one type of training, there are examples of lots of different exercises--weights, bar bells, dumb bells, kettle bells, and some that defy description. Definitely a book you will be rereading as long as you train.

About the Author
Kathy Steinemann, Grandma Birdie to her grandkids, is an award-winning author who lives in the foothills on the Alberta side of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. She has loved words for as long as she can remember.

As a young child, she scribbled poems and stories. During the progression of her love affair with language, she won public-speaking and writing awards, and she contributed to her school newspaper. Then every Monday, rain or shine, she walked home instead of taking the bus so that she could deliver her latest column to the community weekly.

Her career has taken varying directions, including positions as editor of a small-town paper, computer-network administrator, and webmaster. She has also worked on projects in commercial art and cartooning.

A Strong and Varied Collection

"Envision: Future Fiction" has a little bit of everything. There are aliens and robots and dystopian possibilities. There is a little romance, a little warfare, possibilities of extinction and hope for survival. In short, all of the traditional ground of science fiction is covered handily. This is good news for fans of the genre who will know what to expect. The few surprises in this volume come from character driven action, either emotional heft or humor. I'll not summarize each story here. Suffice it to say this contains some solid sci-fi, nothing to offend the sensibilities of the fandom, but little to challenge established tropes either.
A striking aspect of this collection is that it's all good. I liked some stories more than others, but I didn't dislike any of them. I will single out "Salvation" by John Bryant for special recognition. One of the shorter pieces, this was my favorite.
Kathy Steinemann wrote the bulk of the book, but plenty of other authors contributed, making this a varied read and a good opportunity to discover new authors.

Kathy Steinemann's writing is always fantastic. I had the opportunity to read some of her writing while it was in process on Scribophile, and seeing the finished version -- with all the edges smoothed out -- is really great. (I was not incentivized in any way for this review!)

Enjoyable short stories.

Short stories are not my thing but I like the Kathy Steinemann's stories, short and long. My favorite short in this collection was the delightful Alien Irony. There are a few other author's in this collection. I have to admit I only read a few of those but liked most of them.
