A decent starting place

This is a decent place for a novice to start with interpretation of soil test results. The first half of the book is spent on a pretty basic overview of the function of nutrients and general ideas for balancing them in different soil types. The entire 2nd half of the book is sample test results and an accompanying analysis (ie: practical examples).

I have a few problems with the text. Personally I'm not a fan of reprinting material verbatim that is available for free online - it just always feels lazy to me. Woven into the 1st half of the text are brief essays that were previously published in the Logan Labs soil newsletter. I also found it very annoying that the sample soil test results often appear many pages after they are initially discussed. I'd rather see the results up front and have the analysis follow so that I can bookmark the result and move back and forth - rather than trying to skim ahead and find it. I also wish the 2nd half of the book had been distilled into a more abstract ruleset. The practical examples are nice (and will be particularly helpful for some people) but I would rather have an entire book devoted to that (some kind of workbook or companion) and have a more compact and incisive work just on the logic/rules/approach to interpretation.

It's not bad and it does live up to its description: it's practical and it does offer good advice. I would say that if you're spending money on a soil test and getting back very basic analysis or none at all - then this will be money well spent. But the book could be much better than it is. More detailed, denser, concise, smaller print, etc.

Useful but disappointing

With all the 5 star reviews here I really had my hopes up for this book. I really, really wanted to like it and, to some degree, I did.

This is a very short book. I'm not complaining, I remember the day when excellent technical books were only 200 pages. However, these small outstanding references were kind of like Unix tools - they covered one subject and covered it well. Mr. Tong, on the other hand attempts to teach us Tomcat, Eclipse, Axis, and PKI in a 165 page book.

While I personally didn't need the tutorials on Tomcat, Eclipse, or PKI I thought they were very well done. Unfortunately I didn't feel this way about the Axis portion of the book. When reading the information about Axis it mostly seemed to me to be:

1. Do this.

2. Now do this.

3. Press enter.

4. See, it worked.

OK, so it worked. I still have very little understanding of why it worked or what other options Axis has to offer.

I also felt the book gave the impression that Tomcat-Eclipse-Axis were joined at the hip. I would have prefered to learn the workings of Axis so that I would be comfortable using it on WebLogic or WebSphere. Maybe using Netbeans as my IDE or maybe just using a command line. In my opinion, Mr. Tong does not deliver this kind of Axis understanding.

Lastly, I'd like to comment on the grammer used in the book. It is clear that Mr. Tong is not a native Engling speaker. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Tong certainly speaks English better than I speak a second language. However, I believe editing by a native English speaker would improve the readability of the book. I didn't really have any big problems understanding the text but the grammer does make it hard to read. In many cases I had to read a sentence several times to get the point.

Useful CXF resource

I'm a professional Software Engineer/Architect with many years of J2EE experience but new to the open source Apache CXF. This book has helped me learn the basic CXF through examples. I was also able to get some very good clarifications/explanations from the book author himself. Please note however that this review only rates the CXF SOAP-based sections as I only skimmed over a few Axis2 and REST paragraphs and could not therefore speak for them. If time allows, I will go over those Axis2 sections in a near future and update this review as suited.

Great Resource for Learning Apache Axis

Kent Tong is a gifted writer and educator who knows Apache Axis very well. I found his explanation of a complex topic such as WS-security simply the best that I have seen. The book is rather short at aound 173 pages but very informative. His diagrams and annotated explanations are very useful in conveying a lot of information in a condensed manner which would have required pages and pages of explanation. Kent has used all the open source tools, e.g., Apache Axis, Eclipse, Eclipse WTP, WSS4J, OpenSSL etc., so you don't need to invest anything. If you have access to a computer and internet, you are good to go. While working through the book examples, I found a few typos, mistakes which I conveyed to Kent. He quicky incorporated his updates in the book and gave me access to an updated PDF. I whole heartedly and unhesitatingly recommend this book if you want to learn Apache Axis and particularly, WS-security.

Fifth and last in Atlas's "Archive Documents of the Avant-garde," this is the first about a composer, though it emphasizes Satie's prose writings and pen-and-ink drawings. Musical examples are included only to illustrate Satie's distinctive musical autograph or the placement of whimsical performance directions, such as his command to a pianist to "put yourself in the shade." Satie so enjoyed playing with words and being "original" that translations of his writings are a bit dangerous, but for any English-only reader interested in Satie's iconoclastic, inventive spirit, this well-organized collection of much nonsense and some sincerity?including articles about Stravinsky and Debussy?will be welcome. Excellent, unobtrusive notes give sources and dates and explain certain elements of content. Recommended for larger music collections that already have studies of Satie's music and all collections concerned with the early 20th-century avant garde.?Bonnie Jo Dopp, Long Branch Community Lib., Silver Spring, Md.

Amusing

Another side of Satie

Norman Lebrecht observes that Virgil Thomson considered Satie the most original mind in modern music, and laments that he applied his gifts so inconsistently. This collection may engender the opposite conclusion, that Satie could have been a great humorist, had he not devoted so much time to musical composition. Included here are the instructions to performers that Satie forbade sharing with the audience, although, unfortunately, the individual piece to which each one applies is not specified. Several essays, notably "The Musician's Day," straddle the line between satire and surrealism. Overall, the collection adds a dimension to Satie beyond his music. Somewhat disturbing are the samples of "advertisements" that reveal an obsession with adolescent interests - castles, sorcerers, and aircraft.

"Grandly forgetting the present"

I would like to relate to you all the occasion of my first encounter with "A Mammal's Notebook". I had found a copy in my university's library. On the train-ride home that same day I started to read. I found Satie's words and satirical sense of humour so delightful that it was impossible for me to put the book away when my train ride came to an end, so my 20-minute walk home became a half hour walk-read with occcasional bursts of laughter. (I guess I looked a little strange, but one often feels compelled to do strange things when immersed in the eccentric world of Satie, who was a true maverick.) Since that time, I have spent many an hour enthralled by this book. (Luckily, I have since invested in my own copy)

Now, I may be a little obsessive, but I think many others will also enjoy A Mammal's Notebook.

About the contents:

Satie is an enigmatic character. He very rarely discussed his own composition processes, so if you are looking for that, you will not find it here.

What you will find includes:
-A mini biography and timeline
-Translations of the witty and mysterious texts that accompany many of his pieces.
-A list of Satie's eccentric performance markings translated to English (e.g. Almost invisible..., Avoid any sacrilegious excitement... Grandly forgetting the present,... etc)
-Articles which he wrote for publication (on various topics: his contemporaries, the art of reading aloud, books, etc.)
-Transcriptions of speeches
-Other writings and musings which weren't intended for publication
-Sketches (of unusual architectural constructions, boats, etc.)

The only thing missing here is an analysis of the material included, but that point is forgivable as there analyses out there. (I would encourage other readers not to skip the end notes as these do give context to some of the items included.)

A highly recomended collection.
