Simply Amazing

Any doubts you've had about yourself, religion, or spirituality will be put to ease after reading this wonderful work. Our society has programmed us to believe in certain things that are down right painful. What a relief to learn that those painful beliefs are lies. How freeing it is to discover how truly powerful we are. I highly recommend this book to you, your children, to your parents, to their parents. The BEST $4.99 I have ever spent in my Life, and that's not an Exaggeration

I happened to find Jim Tolles' blog by accident, or not, when I was searching for information about Spiritual Awakening. It was on his blog that I came upon his ebook. I read a bit of it from his blog and was very intrigued by the information. I have been on a Spiritual Journey/Journey of Self DIscovery. I noticed that the book was only $4.99 and at first I thought that the price maybe was an indication of the quality. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. I purchased the book and the book was nothing short of Amazing. You see, what I discovered on my path is that I tended to be all over the place, I didn't have any type of framework to follow to be sure I was moving in the right direction, at times I felt like I was either going in circles or jumping around so much that I was exhausted and lost at the same time. This book gave me a Practical path to follow, and outlines the "issues" that are standing in most of our ways of being who we are.
I had the privilege of meeting Jim in person and I believe he is a genuine, loving being that really does care about the health and welfare of each and every one of us. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this book, the first few pages alone are worth the price of admission.

If you are looking for spiritual guidance and not religious dogma, I encourage you to not only buy this book, but you should also check Jim out on his YouTube channel ([...] I am not a follower and am not easily swayed, impressed, or lead (translation: NOT A SHEEP.) Jim Tolles is not looking for followers or trying to get you to drink his brand of kool-aid. Jim guides you by helping you look inside yourself to find your answers and suggests ways to connect with others to help you along your path. If you're looking for someone to give you all the answers or tell you what to do, you won't find it here. However, if you simply need a guide, someone to help find the answers that are inside you, read this book and watch his videos.

In a kind of literary Rear Window, Myers (The Blues of Flats Brown, reviewed above) uses 10 short stories to create snapshots of a pulsing, vibrant community with diverse ethnic threads, through all of its ups and downs. Beginning with the tale of a wry character who stages his own funeral on a sweltering 4th of July to celebrate the money he has received from canceling his life insurance policy, Myers then follows with a chilling story of a cop shootout gone wrong. Many of the stories are told through the voices of witty, intelligent teens; Jamie Farrell, in particular, is a standout as he relates his changing luck in "The Streak" and makes other cameo appearances. But even the more poignant stories told in the third person--such as that of Billy Giles, a middling fighter hired by the local gym to make contenders look good, and "Angela's Eyes," infused with superstition, in which Angela possesses the ability to foresee death and destruction through her late father's eyes--keep an inviting, conversational tone. Myers creates an overall effect of sitting on the front stoop swapping stories of the neighborhood. Most readers will find that they could settle in for hours and take it all in. Ages 12-up.

Grade 6 Up-Myers draws upon his experiences growing up in Harlem to create these 10 interconnected stories about a neighborhood inhabited by colorful, memorable characters. Teens figure prominently in these selections, but adults of varying ages also play dominant roles. One of the funniest characters is a fellow named Big Joe, who decides to organize his own funeral while he's still alive to enjoy it. One of the most memorable tales is "Monkeyman," in which a teen stands up to the local gang. A host of other characters come to life. These finely drawn personalities come together in the final story, the celebratory "Block Party-145th Street Style." People in the neighborhood have to put up with crime, police brutality, and poverty, but there are fun times, too. Myers gets a bit sentimental at times, especially in "A Christmas Story," but there's enough balance here among the emotions to make 145th Street a highly enjoyable short-story collection. What one comes away with after reading it is a vivid sense of place and a vibrant feeling of community.

Good Stories Spun by an Author with a Natural Voice

Walter Dean Myers' collection of short stories focuses on the inhabitants of "145th Street" in Harlem. Each story is well-crafted and geared to readers 12 and up; Delacorte Press is the children's branch of Random House Publishers. However, this volume is fine reading for adults as well as children.
The stories share characters, settings, and tone. Myers does an excellent job avoiding bad language while maintaining the vernacular and rhythms of the rich characters that he portrays. Myers has a knack for giving his characters life and credibility. Myers manages to give a sense of adult versus youth dialect in leading us through the concrete realities of Harlem.
Although characters are repeated in the stories, sometimes as background and others as key characters, each story stands on its own and may be read in any order without loss of continuity. In other words, the stories do not build on one another like chapters in a novel.
Each of the ten stories strikes a chord in the reader and "shows" rather than just "tells" you the pressures, fears, and joys of living in the "hood." Human emotion is itself a character throughout the collection and the story lines are expertly constructed to avoid being preachy while relating theme and the moral undercurrent of the human struggle with choices that must be made every day on 145th street.
I particularly enjoyed "Big Joe's Funeral" and "A Christmas Story." Big Joe is a restaurant owner and has his own particular, unique, and large view of what a funeral ought to be about. The Christmas tale delicately balances the spirit of Christmas against the desire of a policeman to separate his personal life from the harshness of the beat he walks.
Every story in this collection is interesting and entertaining. As a sampler, it has whetted my appetite for more of Walter Dean Myers' books. I highly recommend this collection for young or old readers and those who simply appreciate a good story spun by an author with a natural voice.

another coup for the amazing WD Myers

So much attention has been given to Christopher Paul Curtis lately, but it seems to me the prolific work of Walter Dean Myers needs a loud cheering section--so here goes. Two customer reviews, "Another Stunning Work..." and "Good Stories Spun..." give thorough synopses of this anthology. I'll add that my middle schoolers LOVED these stories when I bought the book last spring, and I plan on reading it with my seventh graders later this year too. The stories are combinations of slick, sad, silly, and serious, and therefore one story was able to hook the kids into reading another and another. One 12 year old boy in my class was so intrigued by a character named Peaches--described as "so fine"--that he paid attention to everything else we read from the book hoping she'd turn up again. And she did! Walter Dean Myers just has a keen sense of the world and his gift with words makes reading this, and any, book by him a pleasure.

It Realated![.]

I really liked the book because it realated or reminded me of being back home! Back home it seemed like everywhere around where i stayed everybody knew everybody, and thats the way the book was. On 145th street it seemed like everything happened and when it did everybody knew about it! i Also like the book because i like how he makes it sound like we're all sitting around listening to someone tell what happened earlier that day! The stories i really injoyed were Big Joe's funeral, and The Baddest Dog in harlem! I m really loking forward to reading more of his books!

Well thought-out approach to the essentials of strong Christian leadership. I wanted a little more explanation, but I loved how practical it was. The author's voice is captivating and her experience shines through. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in ministry, burned out, and just needs a little encouragement (or just a strong kick in the rear) ;D

Havilah throws a powerful punch. And it's delicious.

Havilah's The Good Stuff study book is gorgeous, inside and out. Every morsel of wisdom is deliciously presented in excellence, beauty and power. I relished in every clever title, the layout and design, the way she articulates herself while telling stories as well as the knowledge she gives about scriptures. I can tell that she patiently discovers more of God and then generously shares what truths she has been shown. She is such a servant, submitted to God in every way, and that shines through in her writing as she gives away everything just so that we may have freedom from her experiences. I am so grateful for this study book, as well as her ministry and her teachings. This woman is a powerhouse of humility, passion, grace and has so much authority to break off lies of disempowerment, shame from the past, and anything holding you back from what you truly deserve: a life of victory, abundant love, and freedom.

Typical Havilah---She gets busy moms--- she gets straight to the heart and challenges us!

I love Havilah's studies. If you are a mom of littles--- you know you don't have much time for these bible studies that feel like college courses in this season of your life. Her bible studies are practical, and get straight to the point. My favorite part of her study was her prayers and confessions at the end of each day. I love speaking out the truth over myself. I did the 20 days in 20 days. It was a powerful study--- trust me! I will need to go back over it again because her questions and challenges were deep and will take some more thought and time. Make sure you find her YouTube channel and watch each days video that coincides.

Think of yourself as a teacher first and foremost

I read this book in under 24 hours, as it was so interesting. I love John Spiers' writing because he always brings such a unique perspective to the things he discusses.

Perish Your Publisher was a very inspirational read. Upon finishing, I immediately sent a copy to a friend of mine who is a budding writer.

A lot of would-be writers have the idea that you need to sit at a desk in isolation and write your first great work before the world will take notice of you. The model outlined in Perish Your Publisher, in which you teach your way into a career as a writer, seems a lot more realistic.

As a former teacher myself, I see the value in this method ... the combination of teaching & writing is a very powerful strategy when it is aimed at helping others solve problems.

The trouble with many writers is they are too focused on their own thing, their creative vision, such that they don't have time to help others. And that's why nobody reads their books -- because they are self-centered.

John Spiers has published an immensely successful book on import / export (How Small Business Trades Worldwide: Your Guide to Starting or Expanding a Small Business International Trade Company Now) and now he follows up with Perish Your Publisher. His books are successful because they are aimed at helping others lead better lives.

And I think that's the power of the teaching / writing model. Anybody who wants to start or cement their career as a writer should: 1) buy Perish Your Publisher; and 2) find a group of people who would benefit from their help and write a book to address those needs.

It really works!

I purchased "Perish Your Publisher" to coincide with the course being offered online. I had already written my book and was looking for new ways to market it. The author offers a unique perspective for not only putting a book together but for having it sell long-term using an entrepreneurial approach in collaboration with providing courses for community colleges. This is especially ideal for those who have written or are considering writing a "how to" book or one offering any type of specialized knowledge.

After completing the book and course I began sending out proposals to colleges and within a couple weeks I was contacted by three of them to provide an online course with my book being (required) for the class! "Perish Your Publisher" illustrates a way for authors to build a (career) around their books and their knowledge! In tough economic times like these we need more books that offer practical ways for people to succeed in life. Mr. Spiers is doing his part to keep the American dream alive.

Knowledge seems good, but inconsistent book manufacture & delivery happens

While I have not finished reading the book, my post concerns inconsistent quality control in merchandise and delivery.

This is my second time purchasing this book within two weeks of receiving the first book. My first book disappeared at large park-side BBQ. I was halfway into that book. Doggone, so I quickly bought a second book.

In both cases the books arrived within 3-weeks.
My first book arrived in pristine condition.
My second book arrived in its brown envelope with bubble wrap; but the book had been handled roughly. Along its spine are 3 wrinkles and the corner of the book appears to have been dropped and now is dented.

Okay, I figure because after I read it more than once, the book may intern a few more dents.
As I read; I place post-it notes onto the inside back cover. This to mark interesting pages (I don't high lite nor do I underline).
So I opened the inside back cover to see a purple color smudged about 2 inches across.
Jeez, I thinking, "First the dents and bent spine, and now this. What is it?"
It did wipe away with a water soaked tissue, but what was it?!

As for the book, as I read up to the Government Codes chapter, the book is well written. I will finish to see if this writing quality continues.
As for the recommended publishers coming from China? Inconsistent quality issues are known to have come from China & Hong Kong.

Consistency is important to me and quality is important to me. I'd rather be known to deliver consistent quality at the expense of saving a nickle here and there. Currently I'd rather avoid China for quality concerns because my name reputation is important so as not to be tarnished by China.

Most likely I will publish in the Western Hemisphere such as Canada or U.S.A or Europe. I won't rely upon a "one-hit wonder" publication but instead I'll publish many items. Believing that everything I do is of high quality.
A dime here saved from China is not worth the price of my reputation.

As I read this second delivered book, I'm hoping to not see any further smudges. I can't trust from China what chemical the smudges consist of, so any further smudges and I'll toss the book.

I'd rather have the knowledge than to have Chinese contamination.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK

This is a great book.
This though, is a rating for the kindle version which is awful.
The book is a historical novel with several locations, battles and strategical army moves in the middle east.
This casts the use of the three maps at the begging of the book ESSENTIAL, (unless of course you are a frank crusader or an Arab Mameluke of the 12th century).

The book has been converted into the kindle version in a sloppy and unprofessional manner. The maps are scanned in low resolution which makes then UNREADABLE both in standard view and zoom.
Buy the paper version, or try an e-book version checking that the maps are readable.
Stay away from this kindle version.

"Content reports" reporting the matter directly from the menus of the kindle device, have not been noted or answered.
Very bad impression from kindle, kindle support, and -this particular- kindle book.

Gripping Read

An excellent novel with rip-roaring action and lots of passion and love to boot. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Up there with Bernard Cornwell, Michael Arnold , S.J. Parris and C.J. Sansom. A Gripping Read !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hilarious!

I saw some of these snowmen comics circulating in email a while back, never realizing they were part of a comic strip entitled "Tundra." I find the cartoonist's (Chad Carpenter) off-the-wall sense of humor absolutely hilarious. Since this comic strip is not carried in our local newspapers, I have checked out the Tundra Comics website, viewing the scripts that are available there. While all scripts are funny, I think I like the snowmen the best. This book is great: 96 colorful pages of Chad's silly humor, each featuring snowmen. Would definitely recommend the book.

I like the Tundra comics. Love the humor. Most of the cartoons have been in the Sunday paper or weekly comic strips so it was a bit redundant if you read the comics in your local newspaper. I think it makes a great gift for someone who has a sense of humor.

The comic strip by Chad Carpenter is my absolute favorite! I especially like the snowmen and was delighted to see a book with just them! I hope he comes out with another one. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves snowmen by Chad Carpenter!

Thrown together but not explained well.

I was so excited when I found this book in the Sunnyvale public library. It covered a lot of subjects which would be interesting to any one in the field. But I was very dissappointed when I took the book home and tried to read it. The writer has just thrown things together without carefully explaining or organizing them. This book in no way qualifies as a text book or as any book you can learn from, unless you already know the subject quite well. Shame!

This book has a lot of technical information. But it has not been compiled properly. It is hard to understand if you are new to some of the concepts. Plus the book costs a lot. It cost $83.00 in 1995. You could learn as much from Tektronix and HP application notes that are available on the web or theough a 800 number.

Lifetime should get a hold of this

Overall the writing is good, and I was never bored with it. It doesn't have chapters, it has Part 1--the courtship Part 2--the meat of the marriage Part 3--old age. The characters are really flat and the sterotypes that she has forced them into are really annoying. Simple country girl, who can never aspire to be more and suave educated city boy fall in love. But its more of an eternal lust, they can't stay away from each other or they are completely miserable. However, they rarely talk as anything he says goes over her head and anything she says is something he knows she is going to say. Their marriage proves weirdly symbiotic.

It really is like a Lifetime movie, however. Very melodramatic and no real deep thoughts.

A simply told tale of a marriage

It's a bit romantic; a rich Philadelphia youth takes a trip to the countryside to paint, and he stops at a farmhouse in the Pennsylvania countryside to beg a lunch when he sees a pretty farm girl ring the supper bell. The farmer's daughter is indeed pretty and he paints her in the rustic 1800's farmhouse kitchen. From there, William is smitten, and despite the disappointment of his railroad tycoon father, he marries Ruth.
Ruth and William couldn't be more different; he is sophisticated and educated. She is a peasant and is uncomfortable away from the land. But their marriage is bound by a rich physical love that sustains them through their Golden anniversary. And through tragedy.
This is a simply-told tale, in the way Buck had of telling the story of people as people, almost divorced from their times. It is not as profound as "The Good Earth" but it has that elemental style that makes for great films and great stories. While this is not Buck at her best, it is a fine tale.

I believe this book, (Portrait Of A Marriage) is loosely based on the marriage of Pearl Buck's maternal grandparents. He was an aristocratic watch maker from a wealthy family, and she was a hard working WVa. farm woman. She felt that the rugged life was too difficult for her gentleman husband, and did all the farm work. More on this couple can be found in the biography of Pearl Buck's mother, "The Exile." It is, in my opinion, one of her best books. Hard to find, but worth the effort.

From the preface: "The present is the best collected edition of the important works of Schiller which is accessible to readers in the English language. Detached poems or dramas have been translated at various times since the first publication of the original works; and in several instances these versions have been incorporated into this collection. Schiller was not less efficiently qualified by nature for an historian than for a dramatist. He was formed to excel in all departments of literature, and the admirable lucidity of style and soundness and impartiality of judgment displayed in his historical writings will not easily be surpassed, and will always recommend them as popular expositions of the periods of which they treat. Since the publication of the first English edition many corrections and improvements have been made, with a view to rendering it as acceptable as possible to English readers; and, notwithstanding the disadvantages of a translation, the publishers feel sure that Schiller will be heartily acceptable to English readers, and that the influence of his writings will continue to increase."
