A Scare a Minute!

Looking for a good scare? Want a story that makes you think twice about turning out the lights? Well, this is it! Death Loves Me Not wastes no time with a ghost haunting our heroine from the opening pages. Ms. Tee introduces us to Eden, and right away, your heart goes out to this young woman. Who among us didn't feel 'different' or left out, in our teenage years? Was there never a time when your parents didn't 'get' you? Of course, Eden faces so much more than simple teen angst.

Whether we share Eden's helplessness at her failure to save one girl, or when to our horror, hundreds die, or her wonder when she realizes Stud loves her, this story has it all. And danger lurks around every page. Interwoven we find true friendship, love, and budding romance. As I learned when reading Ms. Tee's romance books, she is a true master of tugging at the heart strings (When Saffi March lost her baby, I mean...I... sorry, got a little sidetracked there. Just read 'When Fangirls Cry, o.k.?)

As a fan of horror from the likes of Koontz, and King, this is one of the most original tales of this genre I have encountered. Nothing is truly obvious, and we are kept guessing about everything, from the true nature of Will and Stud, to the identity of the little girl in pink. While reading Death Loves Me Not, the flashlight, and the 1911, were never far from hand. Chilling!

Creepy and Scary

I really loved this book. I was on the fence about buying this book at first, I mean what would a romance author know about writing a horror? Well she completely blow that thought out of the water within the first couple of chapters. The book is a great late night read, plus it scared me and creeped me out at the same time.What more could you ask for in a horror?

While I adore both Marian Tee's YA romances and her adult ones, this book is what made me a loyal fan. She took this story line and made it into something new and fresh. I would defiantly buy any other books she writes, they are just that good.

Not bad...

...but it would benefit from another pass through the hands of an editor.

The story, overall, is interesting, somewhat suspenseful, and not really like anything else I have read. The author gives you just enough information to keep you interested, without spoiling it with too much backstory at any one time. The creepy moments are just creepy enough to make you wonder what might be hiding in the shadows or under your bed when you're not looking.

My main complaints, and I have two:
The first is with the editing. There are numerous misspellings and words missing completely from sentences. They weren't glaring problems, but just noticeable enough that it detracted from a smooth read. And it seemed to get a little worse the farther into the story you got.
My other complaint had to do with time transition in the story. I found myself lost a couple of times in the jump from present to past and had to backtrack to make sure I hadn't missed anything. It wasn't as seamless as it could have been, but it wasn't a deal-breaker, either.

All in all, if you're looking for a supernatural story, just chock full of ghosts and demons and murder, this is your baby. The story line is a fresh take on the genre and is handled in such a way as to keep you turning (scrolling) pages to find out what happens next.
But if you're a stickler for the perfectly edited, you might want to wait it out for the update.

Four stars for a creepy read, and I'll be checking out some of the other titles from this author.

Wow! What a comprehensive book. The book consists of several sections covering the history of computer RPGs. It starts with the origins, and goes into the bronze age, silver age, early golden age, golden age and onward into the platinum age and the modern era.

The Dark Age concerns itself with the pre home computer works on university mainframes, progresses into the Bronze Age with titles like Apshai and Akalbeth. The Silver Age brings us Wizardry and the early Ultima's I to III. and so on.

The book gives reviews of hundreds of games across many platforms. Often accompanying with a screenshot. This is one of the books weaker moments. The screenshots (apart from a couple of colour slides in the middle) are black and.. black. They are very very dark, often to the point of useless. Some are not too bad to look at and you can make them out.

The book does have a comprehensive index at the back, letting you quickly look up your favourite titles.

On first getting the book, I scanned my favourites and they were all there. Some of the more obscure titles like Legends on the TI99 were not present.

Gamasutra featured several articles by the author, which gives you an insight into the books contents, of which they are greatly expanded opon.

Most games get several paragraphs but I would have liked to see a little more critical thought in the reviews, but understanding that early games often had the 'Kill the big Foozle' plot, makes things hard to expand opon after the first time.

More notable games get much bigger coverage, like the classic SSI Gold Box games (Pool of Radiance, Azure Bonds, Champions of Krynn etc).

The book ends with discussion on recent titles like Dungeons and Dragons Online, Guild Wars and its ilk.

You can tell the author has quite a love for the genre, and if you grew up in the 80's or 90's, this book is just filled with info that provokes nostalgic memories.

If you bought a lot of computer magazines, you may feel a bit cheated, just remember the book is a collection of reviews. Probably the most complete and comprehensive you'll ever find.

Fans of CRPG's really should buy this book. (Hey, just like the gold box games, we even have Clyde Caldwell cover art, pretty cool stuff)

The reason for not giving 5 stars, is down to the dark screen captures. Everything else in the book is top notch.

A book for any game lover

I read this book more for nostalgic reasons than for the actual desire to read about these games. The book covered (in small detail) a very important game to me.

That was my intial thoughts on the book. After reading, I would say that the book is very well written and very informative. I especially like the beginning of the book which indicates new features and who was the first to do it. As the book goes on things blur a little too me, as the industry itself just started copying one another.

Great book, and should be read by any who have enjoyed CRPGs.

Superbly detailed, smoothly written masterwork on CRPGs

Speaking as a long-time (a REALLY long time) programmer and avid video gamer, I am finding this book an amazing read. I _lived_ through the prehistoric era of video game development, when text-based stuff like the original Zork was still being written. Yet Matt Barton has methodically researched and uncovered games and individuals that even _I_ hadn't heard of.

Mr. Barton brings the same thorough analysis and critical eye to essentially all the Role-Playing games made since then. His analysis and review of the varying features which comprised each of the CRPG's is unparalleled. This volume is, quite simply, an absolute MUST HAVE reference for anyone who considers themself to be a CRPG fan. His writing style is smooth, very engaging, and you will find yourself eagerly reading the various 'behind the scene' tidbits he has been able to tease out of the dust-bin of history.

I also recommend this book for any programmer seriously considering a job in the game-industry. Even if you aren't particularly enamored of role-playing games, rest assured that you will benefit greatly from this amazing book.

You will find no greater reference on all of the classic companies, individuals, games, and gaming-style experiments. You will also find out who got bought/sold to whom, where the different trends in gaming have come from, and how all these influences came together at different times in our gaming culture. To forge something new, something truly innovative, you must understand and respect what has come before you--even if you didn't particularly _like_ a given genre or game series. You must also know what worked, what didn't, WHY things happened as they did, WHAT compromises were made, and so on. Even knowing WHEN a specific game or game-style happened is important. Tomorrow's next "BIG THING" may be a throwback to something tried a two-decades ago--recognizing a coming repeat in popular culture could mean you develop the next "Final Fantasy" or "Minecraft" or "Angry Birds" or "Command and Conquer" or "Doom". This book might very well help you do that.

The Three Pillar model originated in a leadership course that every Harvard MBA student takes before graduation. The Harvard course is based on three lenses of decision making: economics, law, and ethics. The Three Pillar model expands these lenses by replacing “economics” with “strategy.” With this change the model becomes a powerful tool for personal and leadership decisions as well as business decisions.

This book takes you through four steps that enable you to use the Three Pillar model for business decisions:

Step One: Become a legally savvy leader. This does not require memorization of legal rules. Instead, you should understand how the law works in practice. Various surveys have identified the key legal areas that every business leader should understand: product liability, employment law, government regulation, intellectual property, contracts, and dispute resolution.

This book provides briefings on each area and shows how they impact your key stakeholders: customers, employees, government, and investors.

Step Two: Become an effective risk manager. After your briefings on the law, you are now ready to focus on the Law Pillar. The Law Pillar emphasizes risk management. This book explains how to manage the legal risks that constitute the main threat to your business success. For example, the chapter on product liability will describe how to make strategic new product decisions, how to isolate product risks by creating subsidiaries, and how to design new products to minimize the risk of being sued for selling a defective product.

Step Three: Align the Strategy Pillar with the Law Pillar to create value. Many leaders think that there is an inherent tension between the Strategy Pillar, with its value creation orientation, and the Law Pillar, with its risk management orientation. This book explains how you can overcome this tension and align the two pillars by focusing on the interests of each of your stakeholders. For example, by focusing on customer interests, a process designed to prevent product liability can be transformed into a powerful product development tool.

Step Four: Develop an ethical organization. Understanding the Ethics Pillar of decision making enables you to play a leadership role in developing compliance and values standards for your organization. This role requires that you “walk the talk” by using a principled process for making ethical decisions. By combining the Ethics Pillar with the Law Pillar and the Strategy Pillar, you can become a responsible corporate citizen while at the same time creating value for your shareholders and other stakeholders.

Once you master the Three Pillar model for business decisions, you can easily apply the model to personal decisions and to leadership in any organization.

About the Author

George Siedel is the Williamson Family Professor of Business Administration and the Thurnau Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan. He teaches courses on negotiation, public policy and business law at Michigan's Ross School of Business. He also has taught seminars around the world to business leaders, entrepreneurs, attorneys, physicians, and athletic directors.

Professor Siedel completed graduate studies at the University of Michigan and Cambridge University. He served as a visiting professor at Stanford University and Harvard University and as a Visiting Scholar at Berkeley. As a Fulbright Scholar, he held a Distinguished Chair in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Professor Siedel has received several national research awards, including the Maurer Award, the Ralph Bunche Award, and the Hoeber Award. He has also received many teaching awards, including the 2014 Executive Program Professor of the Year Award from a consortium of 36 leading universities committed to international education. LLC simple

I recently bought this book and found it to be very informative and to the point. I looked at other books, but most were wordy. My time is limited and I needed a book that would provide me the info without the fluff. There is a good state information section that provides info like Addresses, URLs, Legal URLs, Name Requirements, and form descriptions. The actual forms are not provided but the resource is given. I would recommend this book for someone looking for enough information to answer your questions and give you guidance in going forward.

Very informative

This book breaks what you need to know to form an LLC down nicely and easily by chapter. You can skip around if you'd like, but I wanted to make sure I knew everything about the topic and read it straight through. Full of helpful examples to illustrate the concepts just presented. Definitely recommend to others looking to learn about corporate structures and most specifically, the LLC.

Not "All You Need To Know"

I was hoping to be able to set up the LCC with this book, but apparently I needed to get the "How to Form an LLC" book (which I'm NOT going to do).

I've read the Nolo California Corporations book and it already covered much of the info here. What I was looking for was help with writing good articles of organization and operating agreement (specifically for a 1-person LLC).

The operating agreement example he gives is not specific to a one-person firm. A prudent person might change the language in his example operating agreement to reflect that the LLC is composed of just one person. Also, the book does not cover the fact that in CA you can specify additional info in the Articles, such as rules for admitting new members.

Awfully light for "All you need to know".

Good Enough for a Semester

Despite the typos and occasional incorrect grammar, it was an interesting book. There were some things that I thought were annoying though. It was confusing finding the website to create my account. It should be more clear that different schools have different servers because I was really confused before I saw the little box with tiny print that says to click to find your server. I also don't like that you have to click and drag the page to move it up and down. It would be much easier to be able to scroll up and down. Overall, it was a pretty good book though.
