Excellent Mix of Theory and Practical Information

As a longtime writer and educator, I came across Thomas Vogel’s book while seeking a primer about the underlying tenets that govern creativity. I appreciate theory but I was also looking for a practical guide that would give me insights into what makes creativity work and how to maximize in others. I found this book to be extremely useful --still research based without clobbering me with data. His theory that creativity is worth discovering and identifying in every person is beautifully rendered. And the cost of failing to do so is clearly high. The other huge takeaway is how Vogel shows that creativity grows from “practice” with excellent instruction on ways to integrate it into a busy life. Vogel writes clearly and well. I wasn’t surprised that he is a professor at Emerson where he must have honed his ideas and advice to a sharp edge. I’ve utilized his writing to launch an arts program for at-risk teens. Our results have been outstanding. Vogel deserves a chunk of credit.

Breakthrough Thinking is one of the most important books I now require my advertising students to read. It opens the mind and allows the students to foster their own creativity in a variety of different ways that may have been shut off since childhood. Before using this book for my courses the students would tell me they are not creative and have no way to become creative. I now have students that read this book front to back before I have even assigned chapters. I see students discover opportunities in the field of creative advertising after having read this book. Overall, this is a book that I think advertising educators have been waiting to place in the hands of their students. Hats off to Mr. Vogel for writing one of the most important books in the education of creative awakening.

Peter Tannenbaum earned his bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and Political Science and his PhD in Mathematics from the University of California–Santa Barbara. He has held faculty positions at the University of Arizona, Universidad Simon Bolivar (Venezuela), and is professor emeritus of mathematics at the California State University–Fresno. His research examines the interface between mathematics, politics, and behavioral economics. He has been involved in mathematics curriculum reform and teacher preparation. His hobbies are travel, foreign languages and sports. He is married to Sally Tannenbaum, a professor of communication at CSU Fresno, and is the father of three (twin sons and a daughter).

I have taken many college math courses, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Calculus was the only one that had some application to the real world, until the Modern Math class which used this book.

The first chapter starts out with preference ballots, which is relevant in our world of 3rd party candidates stealing elections (think Nader and Perot). It is interesting to see how many voting systems can be applied with varying winners and fairness. After elections and weighted ballots, you learn about Fibonacci Numbers, Golden Ratio, Gnomons, and Spiral growths. Population growth math is explored, as is fractals, symmetry, geometry, statistics, probabilities, and distributions.

Everyone in my class remarked on how much they actually enjoyed the course and the actual textbook. This textbook is extremely easy to read and use, with many colorful pictures, graphs, and side notes. The sections are very easy to digest because they are short and sweet, usually covering one concept per section.

I recommend this book for anyone who is simply interested in the real-world application of math, not just those taking a course which requires this book. There is a student solutions manual sold separately, but don't bother. This book has all the odd answers in the back, and it is not terribly difficult anyways. It is just challenging enough to still be interesting.

A great text that is almost identical in the last 4-5 editions

I have used this text through four editions as the basis of a non-majors survey math course. It is great for students at different points on the geometry-algebra-calculus sequence, because none of them has likely seen the material before (well, maybe the probability and stats) and the demands for symbolic manipulation are low. However the algorithmic nature of the problems still presents interesting intellectual challenges. I do have one huge gripe with the publisher (not the author); this is a superb example of using trivial edition updates to kill the used text market. It is quite easy to teach students with anywhere from editions 5-8 (and maybe more) by just choosing problem sets for homework that are common to all the editions (and many, if not most, of them are, with differences in numbering). Pearson seems to be changing the cover and making tiny tweaks in an effort to get everyone to buy a new (and expensive) text. It's pretty comical; I can send students to an example in the chapter, and it is almost always identical and numbered the same! So instructors, definitely consider using this text, but let your students get a slightly older edition cheap on the used market; it will cost you little effort to save them a ton of $$$.

Laura M. Justice, Ph.D., is a clinical speech-language pathologist and applied researcher in early childhood language and literacy development, communication disorders, and educational interventions. Dr. Justice is Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University, is Editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and is Founding Editor of Evidence-Based Practice Briefi. Dr. Justice's research activities have received grant support from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, the International Reading Association, the National Institutes ofHealth, and the U. S. Department of Education's Institute ofEducation Sciences. She has received such awards and honors for her work as the Editor's Award for the American Journal of5peech-Language Pathology, the Early Career Publication Award from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division for Research, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering from President G. W. Bush, and a Fulbright Scholar Award. Justice has published nearly 100 articles, chapters, and reports on early education and language lliteracy intervention and has authored or edited seven books.
Helen K. Ezell, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in the study of child language development and disorders. In addition to her research in child language, she has an interest in the preparation of teacher-scholars in speechlanguage
pathology. Dr. Ezell is affiliated as adjunct faculty with the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches in the areas of communication science and disorders.

I particularly liked the use of examples that were given

I had to purchase this book for a college course I was taking. Honestly, I don't even remember learning all of the syntax in this book when I was younger. There's a wealth of information here and each chapter has questions to test your understanding at the end. I particularly liked the use of examples that were given; they made the information much more easy to process and remember.

WHEN THE STUDENT IS READY, THE TEACHER WILL APPEAR. LISTEN TO OSHO AS HE SPEAKS OF LIFE AND DEATH

The Art of Living and Dying is my 17th Osho book. There is a pithy saying that "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear" and the right Osho book has always showed up when I was ready to read it. At 70 years of age and having seen my father during his last two weeks of his 101 years on this wonderful planet, the Art of Living and Dying confirmed for me much of my thinking regarding death. My father kept telling me over and over, " I just want to go home". He stopped eating and drinking and just rested peacefully until he stopped breathing. The book assured me that I am on the right tract in preparing for that time when I can say as my dad did ,"I just want to go home".

I was most impressed with the how Osho handled the subject of reincarnation, the continuation of life. No one can understand reincarnatiuon by listening to someone else's explanation. He made that very clear and encouraged us to find the answer ourselves through meditation. He knows the answer from his own experience and we must find it, even if our answer is different from his, through our own experiences.

Osho is very repetitive to the point of boring at times but if you stay with him, you'll discover nuggets of wisdom that's worth the wait. It may be the last Osho book I'll buy because I've gone as far as he can take me. Now I'm on my own. Thank you Ohso.

For you Osho lovers out there, The Art of Living and Dying is a great book to read and I highly recommend it. Don't be afraid of death. It began with and is part of life. There's no life without death and no death without life and so life and death will never end. Good luck!

I have read 70 books of Osho and this is one of my favorites. His clarity to explain such things as dead are great, his wisdom and intelligennce are unlike any other Master that has ever step on this planet..

An absolute must have

There are a multitude of books now available on the subject of death but as far as I am aware this is the only one from an enlightened consciousness. Osho is clearly speaking form his experience so all that he says in bound to have a totally different resonance from mere speculation. With so many aspects touched on, the meditative techniques, and his responses to questions from those who are facing imminent death and from carers, this really is a book that no home should be without!
